Conversion deafness.

Abstract

Conversion deafness is very rarely encountered among adults. This report will illustrate two cases of this somatoform disorder following different traumatic experiences. It emphasizes the difficulties in establishing the diagnosis and reviews various aspects of treatment.

Economic impact of motor-vehicle crashes involving teenaged drivers--Kentucky, 1994.

Motor-vehicle crashes (MVCs) are the leading cause of death and disability for teenagers of driving age (16-19 years) in the United States. In addition, teenaged drivers account for a disproportionate number of MVCs compared with adult drivers (aged > or = 20 years). In Kentucky, teenagers are overrepresented in MVCs. To characterize the economic costs associated with MVCs involving teenaged drivers in Kentucky, the Kentucky Injury Prevention and Research Center conducted a cost analysis of data from MVCs involving such drivers for 1994. This report presents the findings of this analysis, which indicate that, during 1994, crashes involving at least one teenaged driver in Kentucky incurred costs of $410 million.

Lap seat belt injuries.

Over a 4 month period, three patients presented acutely to Whangarei Area Hospital after receiving severe abdominal injuries caused directly by lap seat belts. They were involved in road traffic crashes and were all seated in the middle rear seat of the car. The aim of this paper is to alert people to the injuries that can occur from two point lap belts. To this end, the patients and injuries sustained are described and a review of the literature is presented.
