Imaging for predictable maxillary implants.

Abstract

Whereas other radiographs may be adequate for assessment of mandibular anterior implant sites, the use of computerised tomography is recommended for evaluating potential implant sites in the maxillae. A complete denture replica with appropriate radiopaque markers aids in the assessment. Hounsfield densitometric measurements provide additional information on the quality of available bone.

Late stage soft tissue modification for anatomically correct implant-supported restorations.

For the past decade, the dental profession has developed techniques for producing functionally equivalent implant supported restorations to replace complete dentures. Little thought was given to the development of proper emergence profiles to develop anatomic restorations that were contoured like natural teeth. This article presents a simple method of modifying soft tissues coronal to the implant head that will allow the development of a restoration with correct emergence profile and anatomic contour.

Endosseous implants in an irradiated tissue bed.

Endosseous implants have been placed at the Mayo Clinic Department of Dental Specialties for over 12 years. On the basis of the clinical success of the osseointegration program, the use of implants has been expanded to include placement into tissue beds that have been exposed to therapeutic radiation. This article details preliminary data regarding implant survival in the previously radiated tissue beds. Presurgical evaluation and surgical technique are described and postprosthetic reconstruction complications are also related. Consideration is given to the relatively small number of patients in this review. It is suggested that the results should be shared among multiple institutions to create a meaningful data bank.

Surgical guide fabrication for an angled implant.

This article describes the steps necessary for determining ideal implant abutment position and, subsequently, the optimum implant location that would make this abutment position possible. Procedures necessary for fabricating a surgical guide are explained for placing an ITI angled implant.
