Progressive prosthetic transference for root form implants.

Abstract

The prosthodontic implementation of the concept of progressive bone loading for root form implants is addressed. The use of transitional prostheses of acrylic resin with reinforced cast substructures are utilized to promote progressive prosthetic transference in arches with as few as three remaining natural roots. Progressive prosthetic transference is a clinical execution of biologic, biomechanical, and physiologic principles that are compatible with the needs to foster and maintain osseointegration.

Helical conformational specificity of enzymatically synthesized water-soluble conducting polyaniline nanocomposites.

A novel template guided enzymatic approach has been developed to synthesize optically active conducting polyaniline (PANI) nanocomposites in the presence of H2O2 as an oxidant, using (+) and (-) 10-camphorsulfonic acid (CSA) as a dopant and chiral inductor. The formation of chiral polyaniline in the nanocomposites was confirmed by circular dichroism (CD). Interestingly, the CD spectra of nanocomposites formed either with (+) or with (-) CSA show the enzyme itself plays a critical role in controlling the stereospecificity of the polyaniline (PANI) in the nanocomposite. The enzyme used for the polymerization of aniline in the nanocomposite was horseradish peroxidase (HRP). It was shown that this enzyme prefers a specific helical conformation, regardless of whether induced chirality in the complex CSA-aniline is from (+) or (-) CSA. UV-vis spectra show that the polyaniline is in the conducting form, and transmission electron micrographs (TEM) show that the nanocomposites are dispersed nicely with particle size dimensions in the range of 20-50 nm. Electron diffraction patterns of these chiral polymer nanocomposites suggest that these nanocomposites are in both crystalline and amorphous states.

Near-infrared spectroscopy for the determination of testosterone in thin-film composites.

More rapid, reproducible, and cost-effective methods to control product quality in the pharmaceutical industry continue to be a major emphasis, particularly with the FDA through its recent process analytical technologies (PAT) initiative. Many different methods have been used to determine the stability and content uniformity of a drug in various dosage forms; however, most of these methods include the destruction of the sample. Therefore, the development of nondestructive methods that allow the analysis of each individual dosage form has become the basis of much research. A new assay for the nondestructive determination of testosterone content in mucoadhesive bi-layer thin-film composites (TFCs) using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) was developed. Five sets of the circular films (n=5) with theoretical testosterone content of 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 mg per 3/8th in. diameter disks were scanned in the near-infrared region of 1100-2500 nm to determine testosterone content. The NIR results were directly compared with those obtained using a previously developed ultraviolet assay for testosterone at 240 nm. Principal component regression (PCR) was performed to calibrate the NIR assay. This correlation produced r2=0.99 with a standard error of estimate (SEE)=0.18 mg, and a standard error of performance (SEP)=0.18 on cross validation with an equal number of samples (F test passed at P=0.05). Though the UV assay showed a slightly better r2 value, the NIR assay was much quicker, easier, and nondestructive. Therefore, the NIR assay may have significant potential for use in the quality control of pharmaceutical films containing drugs.

Size exclusion chromatography on soft and semi-rigid packing materials in the dynamic axial compression mode.

The effect of dynamic axial compression within a range of up to 5 bar upon the structure of the bed packed with soft and semi-rigid packing materials (Sephadex G-25, Bio-Gel P2 and Toyopearl HW-40) and the associated chromatographic parameters were studied for size exclusion chromatography. Continuous packing compression is accomplished by use of a special column with controlled external pressure applied to the packing. Compression has been shown to favor an overall increase in the resolution with pressure optima observed in some cases.
