A PGSE diffusion and electrophoretic NMR study of Cs+ and Na+ dynamics in aqueous crown ether systems.

Multinuclear pulsed gradient spin-echo (PGSE) NMR diffusion and linewidth measurements were used to probe binding and transport in aqueous Na+-15-crown-5, Na+-18-crown-6, Cs+-15-crown-5 and Cs+-18-crown-6 systems. Since direct PGSE observation of many alkali cations is precluded by either low inherent sensitivity or rapid relaxation (or both), the feasibility of proton-detected electrophoretic NMR (ENMR) measurements to complement PGSE data was investigated. ENMR measurements were performed on aqueous Cs+-, Li+-, Na+-, K+-, and Rb+- 18-crown-6 systems. The data analysis is based on a two-site binding model and its corresponding association constants. Cs+ was found to bind considerably more tightly to 18-crown-6 (K=8 M-1) than to 15-crown-5 (K approximately 2 M-1), whereas Na+ had almost equal affinity (K approximately 4.5 M-1) for 15-crown-5 and 18-crown-6. The difficulties encountered in analysing the NMR parameters, methodological limitations and the implied need for more complicated binding models are discussed.

Analysis of radiocaesium in the Lebanese soil one decade after the Chernobyl accident.

Fallout from the Chernobyl reactor accident due to the transport of a radioactive cloud over Lebanon in the beginning of May 1986 was studied 12 years after the accident for determining the level of (137)Cs concentration in soil. Gamma spectroscopy measurements were performed by using coaxial high sensitivity HPGe detectors. More than 90 soil samples were collected from points uniformly distributed throughout the land of Lebanon in order to evaluate their radioactivity. The data obtained showed a relatively high (137)Cs activity per surface area contamination, up to 6545Bqm(-2) in the top soil layer 0-3cm. The average activity of (137)Cs in the top soil layer 0-3cm in depth was 59.7Bqkg(-1) dry soil ranging from 15 to 119Bqkg(-1) dry soil. The horizontal variability was found to be about 45% between the sampling sites. The depth distribution of total (137)Cs activity in soil showed an exponential decrease. Estimation of the annual effective dose due to external radiation from (137)Cs contaminated soil for selected sites gave values ranging from 19.3 to 91.6 micro Svy(-1).

The contents and forms of solid-phase species of radioactive strontium and cesium in Taiwan soils.

This study was to investigate the activities and contents of (137)Cs in the profiles of selected arable and forest soils in Taiwan and various solid-phase species of (85)Sr and (137)Cs in selected arable soils in Taiwan. The gamma (gamma) ray spectra of the collected soil samples and some of the soils amended with (85)Sr and (137)Cs were measured. The data indicate that the arable soils from Sanhsing series, Sanhsing Township and Chuangwei series, Chuangwei Township, Ilan County, and from Tunglochuan series, Pinglin Township, Taipei County shows significantly higher radioactivity of (137)Cs (ND - 11.0 +/- 0.2 Bq kg(-1)). Furthermore, the radioactivity of (137)Cs in the mountain soils (1.24 +/- 0.07 - 42 +/- 1 Bq kg(-1)) from Yuanyang Lake Nature Preserve among Ilan, Taoyuan, and Hsinchu Counties is the highest among the investigated mountain forest soils. This may be mainly attributed to the fact that Ilan County is located in the northeastern part of Taiwan and faces the northeastern and northern seasonal winds with lots of precipitation annually from mid-autumn through mid-spring next year and is receiving greater amount of fallouts yearly. Due to longer reaction period (>or=3 y) of (137)Cs with soil components, (137)Cs was mainly in the forms bound to oxides and to organic matter in the soil amended with (137)Cs and in the soil contaminated with (137)Cs. On the contrary, due to shorter reaction period (<60 d) of (85)Sr with soil components, (85)Sr was mainly in exchangeable form and partially in the forms bound to carbonates and oxides in the soils amended with (85)Sr.
