Micromechanics of the dentin/adhesive interface.

Scanning acoustic microscopy (SAM) was used in the burst mode at 400 MHz, nominal lateral resolution 2.5 microm, to study the micromechanical properties of the dentin/adhesive interface. Corresponding specimens from the same tooth were investigated using mu Raman spectroscopy, light microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy.12 The elastic moduli of the components of the dentin/adhesive interface were determined by comparing the recorded acoustic impedance values to a calibration curve generated on standard materials. The standard materials, which include polypropylene, Teflon, PMMA, pyrex glass, aluminum, titanium, and stainless steel, provide the appropriate range of acoustic impedance values. The elastic moduli of the components of the dentin/adhesive interface are: partially demineralized dentin, 13 Gpa; mineralized dentin, 28 GPa; adhesive, 5.0 GPa; and unprotected protein at the interface < 2.0 GPa.

Synthesis and characterization of N-isopropyl, N-methacryloxyethyl methacrylamide as a possible dental resin.

In this study, N-isopropyl, N-methacryloxyethyl methacrylamide (NIMM) is proposed as a possible reactive diluent in place of triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) for dental resin mixtures. Real-time infrared spectroscopy was used to monitor the double-bond conversion as a function of irradiation time, and mixtures of 50/50wt% bis-GMA/NIMM were found to reach final conversions (95%) that were 1.5 times greater than bis-GMA/TEGDMA (65%) under visible light irradiation. In addition, samples cured to these conversions were tested with dynamic mechanical analysis. The bis-GMA/NIMM mixture (100% converted) was found to have a higher glass transition temperature and modulus at body temperature than a comparable bis-GMA/TEGDMA mixture (60% converted). Finally, the water sorption and solubility of bis-GMA/NIMM were determined to be higher than the bisGMA/TEGDMA comparison, but the values were still within the range of the ISO 9000s standard. These results suggest that bis-GMA/NIMM mixtures are a viable alternative to conventional dental resins since a greater degree of monomer conversion is obtainable without sacrificing physical and mechanical properties.

Challenges with studies investigating longevity of dental restorations--a critique of a systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: A systematic review is a method of evaluating the published and unpublished literature relating to a specific area or topic. The objectives of this paper are to identify and discuss problems encountered in synthesising the available literature; and to make recommendations for the future conduct and reporting of clinical trials that aim to determine the longevity of dental restorations. DATA SOURCES: Studies were identified by a wide search of published and unpublished material in any language using a large number of general and specialist data bases, hand searching of key dental journals and searching of abstracts from conference proceedings. STUDY SELECTION: Pre-defined inclusion criteria based on objective outcome measures of restoration longevity and study designs were applied to determine study selection. CONCLUSIONS: A review of the longevity of dental restorations completed recently encountered substantial problems in designing an appropriate protocol to address this issue. The review found that many of the factors reported previously as affecting restoration longevity could not be confirmed using the agreed systematic review protocol that incorporated an objective study design. Further, the multiplicity of study designs, and reporting methods found in the literature made meta-analyses impossible. A proforma is proposed in order to aid the design of future research into the longevity of restorations.
