Aromatherapy: does it work?

Abstract

Results from Itai et al.'s (2000) study support a group utilization project to educate nurses regarding aromatherapy, so that nurses can implement it in their practice to reduce their patient's anxiety levels. A major feasibility issue would be the price tag; one must consider both the cost of paying for the training that the nurses would need and the materials needed to implement the practice or aromatherapy. Future research would be very valuable, especially if it replicated this study using a larger, more diverse sample of patients.

Comment on "Fringe projection profilometry with nonparallel illumination: a least-squares approach".

We comment on the recent Letter by Chen and Quan [Opt. Lett.30, 2101 (2005)] in which a least-squares approach was proposed to cope with the nonparallel illumination in fringe projection profilometry. It is noted that the previous mathematical derivations of the fringe pitch and carrier phase functions on the reference plane were incorrect. In addition, we suggest that the variation of carrier phase along the vertical direction should be considered.

Corrections to refractive index data of stoichiometric lithium tantalate in the 5-6 microm range.

We propose corrections to the coefficients in the published Sellmeier equation for stoichiometric LiTaO3 [Opt. Lett.28, 194 (2003)] that allow the extension of the wavelength range within the region of midinfrared absorption edge up to 6 microm. The required extraordinary refractive index data for this range were obtained using single-pass optical parametric fluorescence measurements with a pump wavelength of 1064.4 nm. We also observed efficient parasitic second-harmonic generation that could affect some quasi-phase-matching interactions. The corrected Sellmeier equation improves the accuracy of poling period calculations where the idler wavelength is within the region.
