Low-cost intervention to decrease mastitis among lactating women.

Abstract

UNLABELLED: Mastitis is a common maternal health problem which can lead to serious infant health problems such as poor growth and HIV infection. Anti-secretory factor (AF), which can be induced in milk by maternal consumption of a low-cost cereal product, has been associated with decreased mastitis. CONCLUSION: Consumption of cereals which induce AF should be investigated as a potential intervention in less-developed countries where the consequences of mastitis for infants are most severe.

Rapid multimineral determination in infant cereal matrices using wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence.

A rapid and simple method for the determination of a series of macroelements (sodium, magnesium, phosphorus, chlorine, potassium, and calcium) and trace elements (manganese, iron, and zinc) by wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence has been developed and validated for infant cereal matrices. Reference values were obtained by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy and by potentiometry. The 88 investigated samples were commercially available products. Pellets of 4 g were prepared under 10 tonnes of pressure. For each sample, 3 pellets were prepared and analyzed. Limits of quantification and repeatabilities were evaluated. Calibrations were established with 43 samples, and method validation was made using a second set of 45 samples. An evaluation of this alternative method was done by comparison with data obtained from the reference methods. The results show the good performances of the alternative method to routine infant cereals analysis.

Early prediction of wheat quality: analysis during grain development using mass spectrometry and multivariate data analysis.

Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry and multivariate data analysis have been used for the determination of wheat quality at different stages of grain development. Wheat varieties with one of two different end-use qualities (i.e. suitable or not suitable for bread-making purposes) were investigated. The samples were collected from grains from 15 until 45 days post-anthesis (dpa). Gluten proteins from wheat grains were extracted and subsequently analysed by mass spectrometry. Discrimination partial least-squares regression and soft independent modelling of class analogy were used to determine the quality of new and unknown wheat samples. With these methods, we were able to predict correctly the end-use qualities at every stage investigated. This new fast technique, based on the rapidity of mass spectrometry combined with the objectivity of multivariate data analysis, offers a method that can replace the traditional rather time-consuming ones such as gel electrophoresis. This study focused on the determination of wheat quality at 15 dpa, when the grain is due for harvest 1 month later.

Cereal phytochromes: targets of selection, targets for manipulation?

Plants respond to shading through an adaptive syndrome termed shade avoidance. In high-density crop plantings, shade avoidance generally increases extension growth at the expense of yield and can be at odds with the agronomic performance of the crop as a whole. Studies in Arabidopsis are beginning to reveal the essential role phytochromes play in regulating this process and to identify genes underlying the response. In this article, we focus on how phytochrome signaling networks have been targeted in cereal breeding programs in the past and discuss the potential to alter these pathways through breeding and transgenic manipulation to develop crops that perform better under typical high density conditions.
