Developing a Respiratory Protection Program. Understanding the written elements.

Abstract

1. Respirators can be the last defense for the estimated 5 million employees who use them for protection from dusts and fibers, fumes, mists, gases, vapors, and biological hazards. Because of these potentially lethal respiratory hazards, occupational and environmental health nurses need to be able to determine the need for, understand, develop, update, and implement an actionable respiratory protection program (RPP). 2. Regulated per 29 CFR 1910.134, a written RPP becomes the map or guideline process specific to the workplace that needs to be followed to ensure employee protection. 3. The nine required written elements of a RPP include respirator selection; fit testing; respirator use in routine and emergency situations; respirator maintenance and change schedules; ensuring adequate breathing air supply, quantity, and flow for atmosphere supplying respirators; regular evaluation of program effectiveness; medical evaluation; training employees in the respiratory hazards in routine and emergent situations; and training employees in proper use of the respirator. 4. Occupational and environmental health nurses are in a unique position to be a RPP program administrator, its designated licensed health care professional, or an active member of a team implementing the RPP process.

Eye rotation and vignetting in visual instruments.

The eye can rotate to accommodate the angular position of an object and the distance of the object from it. The rotation of the eye inside its socket to align its visual axis in the direction of an off-axis image may introduce full or partial vignetting when one is looking through a visual instrument with a real exit pupil. We analyze the effects of vignetting owing to rotation of the eye in visual instruments with real exit pupils.

Large-aperture automatic focimeter for the measurement of optical power and other optical characteristics of ophthalmic lenses.

We propose an optical apparatus enabling the measurement of spherical power, cylindrical power, and optical center coordinates of ophthalmic lenses. The main advantage of this new focimeter is to provide a full bidimensional mapping of the characteristics of ophthalmic glasses. This is made possible thanks to the use of a large-area and high-resolution position-sensitive detector. We describe the measurement principle and present some typical mappings, particularly for progressive lenses. We then discuss the advantages in terms of speed and versatility of such a focimeter for the measurement of complex lens mappings.

Measuring forces with the AFM: polymeric surfaces in liquids.

This review links together for the first time both the practicalities of force measurement and the work carried out to date on force detection between polymeric surfaces in liquids using the atomic force microscope (AFM). Also included is some of the recent work that has been carried out between surfactant surfaces and biologically coated surfaces with the AFM. The emphasis in this review is on the practical issues involved with force measurement between these types of surfaces, and the similarities and irregularities between the observed types of forces measured. Comparison is made between AFM and surface force apparatus (SFA) measurements, as there is a much longer history of work with the latter. Results indicate that forces between the surfaces reviewed here are a complicated mixture of steric-type repulsion, conformational behaviour on separation and long-range attraction, which is often ascribed to 'hydrophobic' forces. The origin of this latter force remains uncertain, despite its almost ubiquitous appearance in force measurements with these types of surfaces.
