Most patients with a booked appointment liked the system. Implementing a booking system requires considerable commitment from health professionals. The booking targets of the NHS plan will not be achieved without an increase in capacity.

The relative increase in chronic diseases, multiple morbidity and the need for nursing care is changing the demand for medical care of the population. Coordinated medical care--spanning disciplines, sectors and medical practice alike--becomes increasing necessarily. To establish a quality-secured and coordinated medical care, a sector-spanning quality management must be organized. With disease management programs and the new hospital financing system recently introduced, economic incentives are finally given to invest into such a quality management approach. This essay is trying to outline these developments and possible future trends.
