Initial experience with stereoscopic visualization of three-dimensional ultrasound data in surgery.

Initial in vivo and in vitro experiments were performed to evaluate the feasibility of stereoscopically displaying three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound data from neurosurgery, laparoscopic surgery, and vascular surgery. Stereoscopic visualization was illustrated by four video sequences, which can be downloaded from http://www.us.unimed. sintef.no/. These sequences show a brain tumor, hepatic arteries in relation to the gallbladder, a model that mimics a neuroendoscope in a cyst, and a "flight" into model of an artery with an intima flap. The experiments indicate that stereoscopic display of ultrasound data is feasible when there is sufficient contrast between the objects of interest and the surrounding tissue. True 3D vision improves perception, thus enhancing the ability to understand complex anatomic structures such as irregular lesions and tortuous vessels.

Removal of 125I from radioactive experimental waste with an anion exchange paper membrane.

The behavior of radioactive iodide and chloride ions through an anion exchange paper membrane to remove 125I from radioactive experimental waste has been studied with nonequilibrium thermodynamic analyses. Anion exchange paper membrane was found to be electroconductively more permeable to iodide ion than to chloride ion. The iodide ion bound more strongly to the anion exchange site within a membrane phase than the chloride ion by more than twice. The results suggested that an anion exchange paper membrane was appropriate for the filtration removal system.

Bovine serum albumin-hemoglobin fractionation: significance of ultrafiltration system and feed solution characteristics.

This work investigates the fractionation of similar molecular weight proteins bovine serum albumin (69 kD) and bovine hemoglobin (67 kD) by ultrafiltration. Three different membranes, viz. regenerated cellulose, poly(sulfone) and surface modified poly(acrylonitrile), each with a nominal molecular cutoff rating of 100 kD, were examined. The experiments were conducted in dead end, crossflow and vortex flow filtration modes and the separation was studied as a function of feed pH and ionic strength. Under similar system hydrodynamics, the surface modified poly(acrylonitrile) membrane displayed the highest resolution with minimum membrane fouling. The separation could be improved further by operating at low applied pressure (40 kPa) and high mass transfer (> 20 x 10(-6) m/s) in a vortex flow module. Under these conditions, the highest separation factor of 40 was obtained at the pI of hemoglobin.
