Electrolytic fixer.

Abstract

Interest in the recovery of silver from radiographic film generates a need to understand the operating procedures of recovery units utilizing the electrolytic fixer principle. Tailing or terminal units and recirculation units using electrolysis are evaluated. Difficulties encountered in the number of Coulombs applied to a specific amount of fixer are discussed. Reduction of sulfiding as a result of electrolysis and variations in film volumes are noted. The quantity and quality of silver collected can be improved by being aware of alterations in chemical activity used in a silver recovery program.

Immobilization of glucose oxidase in polypyrrole/polytetrahydrofuran graft copolymers.

Glucose oxidase (GOD) was immobilized in four different conducting polymer matrices, namely: polypyrrole, (PPy), poly(pyrrole-graft-polytetrahydrofuran), (1) and (3); and poly(pyrrole-graft-polystyrene/polytetrahydrofuran), (2). The kinetic parameters V(max) and K(m), and the optimum temperature were determined for both immobilized and native enzymes. The effect of electrolysis time and several supporting electrolytes, p-toluenesulfonic acid, p-toluene sulfonic acid (PTSA), sodium p-toluene sulfonate, sodium p-toluene sulfonate (NaPTS), and sodium dodecyl sulfate, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), on enzyme immobilization were investigated. The high K(m) value (59.9 mM) of enzyme immobilized in PPy was decreased via immobilization in graft copolymer matrices of pyrrole. V(max), which was 2.25 mM/min for pure PPy, was found as 4.71 mM/min for compound (3).

Minimizing analyte electrolysis in an electrospray emitter.

The electrospray (ES) ion source is a controlled-current electrolytic flow cell. Electrolytic reactions in the ES emitter capillary are continually ongoing to sustain the production of charged droplets and ultimately gas-phase ions from this device. Under certain circumstances, the analytes under study may be directly involved in these electrolytic processes. It is demonstrated that a simple means to minimize analyte electrolysis is to exchange the normal metal emitter capillary of commercial ES sources with one made of fused silica. This change is shown to provide an ES mass spectrometric system of similar performance in terms of gas-phase ion signal generated for non-electroactive analytes and also assures minimal oxidation of electroactive analytes even at low (2.0 microl x min(-1)) solution flow-rates and high (millimolar) solution electrolyte concentrations.

[Degradation of nitrobenzene in water by electrohydrodynamic DC discharge].

In this paper, the experimental results with respect to the degradation of nitrobenzene in water using electrohydrodynamic DC discharge were presented. The DC voltage was 40 kV, the degradation efficiency in the first discharge process reached 50%, the total degradation efficiency in the second discharge process reached 80%. The products contained acetone. At the same time, the degradation efficiency variation with the voltage polarity, flux, and concentration were studied. These studies will be helpful to the treatment of organic wastewater.
