Biomedical equipment management using a microcomputer.

Abstract

A low cost microcomputer system is described that manages PM and test scheduling, provides lists of selected equipment, prints labels, and calculates management data. The files for 2800 devices fit on a standard mini-diskette and are easily updated.

Patents and the human genome project--new claims for old?

The development and application of genomics is set to revolutionize the life sciences. Commercial exploitation of this research will allow the development of novel therapies and diagnostic assays. A vision of hand surgery over the next 25 years.

Predictions for hand surgery advances over the first 25 years of the new millennium are made. Anticipated changes are categorized as societal, technologic, and research with clinical applications. Certainly advances in computer science and molecular biology will affect all aspects of our lives. Within hand surgery, tissue engineering, materials science, and nanotechnology offer great promise.

Array of hope for gene technology.

A Washington-based bioinformatics company is developing sophisticated DNA microarrays that should help researchers measure and analyze gene expression faster, more economically, and with greater precision than ever before possible. The FlexJet system, as the microarray product is known, uses inkjet technology to propel microscopic strands of DNA nucleotides onto slides, "printing" arrays of DNA molecules in a process not unlike the manner in which a printer deposits ink onto paper, forming distinct patterns of characters and images. Microarray technology may revolutionize the field of toxicogenomics by helping scientists target new drugs, discover gene function, determine biologic pathways, and better understand diseases such as cancer, cystic fibrosis, and cardiovascular disease at the molecular level.
