[Application of serum bile acid chromatography to the diagnoses of liver diseases].

In order to explore the specificity of serum bile acid (SBA) chromatograph in the diagnoses of different kinds of hepatosis, we investigated by means of gas chromatography the changes of serum bile acids in workers who exposed to hexogen or chloroethylene and in patients who suffered from hepatosis such as acute jaundice hepatitis, chronic active hepatitis, cirrhosis and liver cancer. The results revealed different disturbances of SBA occurring in the liver injuries induced by the two kinds of hepatotoxicant. Serum lithocholic acid (LCA), deoxycholic acid (DCA) and chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) in workers exposed to hexogen and wre significantly different from those of the control group respectively (P < 0.01, P < 0.01, P < 0.05); on the other hand, only serum LCA and DCA went up in workers exposed to chloroethylene (P < 0.0005, P < 0.001). The main changes both concentrated on the secondary bile acids. In acute jaundice hepatitis, chronic active hepatitis, cirrhosis and liver cancer, serum LCA, DCA, CDCA and cholic acids (CA) all went up in different degrees compared with the control group respectively (P < 0.005, P < 0.025, P < 0.005, P < 0.005). But no difference was noted among the 4 kinds of bile acids (P > 0.5), except that between CA and CDCA. These provided the evidence of the diagnosis and identification of clinical hepato-biliary diseases and occupational liver injures.

[CT analysis of hepatic metastases].

OBJECTIVE: To describe the manifestations of the hepatic metastases. To investigate the value of CT examination in diagnosis of hepatic metastases. METHOD: CT radiographs of 90 patients with hepatic metastases were studied retrospectively. The tumor number, size, density, shape, spreading in the hepatic parenchyma were analyzed. The size of liver and spleen was measured. RESULTS: Three or more metastatic nodules spreading in the hepatic parenchyma were found in 65 (72%) cases. Two nodules were shown in 6 (7%) cases. 19(21%) cases had only single nodule. 29 of the metastatic deposits located in the hepatic parenchyma near the liver edge. The size of metastatic nodules varied from 0.5 cm to 14 cm. In 87 cases, the density of metastatic nodules was lower than the surround liver parenchyma. In 3 cases of diffuse fatty liver, the metastatic deposits appeared as higher CT density nodules. Central necrosis of the tumor foci was seen in 44 cases. Striking hepatomegaly was noted in 31 cases with widespread nodules. In 26 cases which had one and two nodules, the shape of the liver was normal. In 45 cases, the primary tumour was found by CT at the same time. CONCLUSION: The CT findings of hepatic metastases differ. Multiple nodules disseminating in liver parenchyma is the general sign. Tiny nodules without other clinical signs can be detected by CT.

[Human papillomavirus (HPV) and DNA test in inverted papillomas of the nasal cavities and paranasal sinuses].

To understand the relationship between inverted papillomas and human papilloma virus, 38 cases (44 specimens) of inverted papillomas of nasal cavities and paranasal sinuses were examined for the presence of human papilloma virus (HPV) DNA using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The genetic studies were performed on the formalin fixed and parafin embeded specimens. The results showed that 30 cases were infected by HPV-DNA, in which HPV11 positive was noted for 30 times (68.2%), HPV16 positive for 18 times (40.9%), and HPV18 positive for 2 time (4.5%). 18 HPV11,16 (40.9%) and 2 were HPV11,18 (4.5%). The result suggests that HPV plays a role in the etiology of nasal and paranasal inverted papillomas.

[Comparative study on the erect and fallen types of Platycodon grandiflorum (Jacq.) DC].

Based on botanica characters, phenophase, yield and content of active constituents, the erect and fallen types of platycodon grandiflorum were compared. The results show that the comprehensive characters of erect type are better than those of fallen type and the erect type is therefore good for popularization. Some specific characters of the fallen type are better than those of the erect type, and the fallen type is therefore to be preserved as one of the germ plasm resources.

[Isoesterase assay over the course of dormancy relieving with low temperature in the seed of Fritillaria thunbergii Miq. by electrophoresis].

In order to study the physiological basis of dormancy relieving with low temperature in the seed of Frit-illaria thunbergii isoesterase patterns were assaved by means of electrophoresis over the courses of dormancy relieving at 8-10 degrees C and 3-5 degrees C. The changes of isoesterase patterns are similar at the two different temperatures. Over the courses of dormancy relieving, some new bands are detected and some original bands are enhanced. These results show that the physiological basis may be similar over the courses of dormancy relieving at 8-10 degrees C and 3-5 degrees C.

[Peroxidase assay over the course of dormancy relieving with low temperature in Fritillaria thunbergii Miq. by electrophoresis].

In order to study the physiological basis of dormancy relieving with low temperature in Fritillaria thunbergii, isoperoxidase changes of bud, adaxial epiderm and inner tissues in scale were assayed by means of electrophoresis over the course of dormancy relieving. All the patterns in bud and different parts of scale change at different stages, and the peroxidase activity in bud and adaxial epiderm is higher than that in the inner tissue of scale. These results indicate both bud and scale join in the dormancy relieving.

[Electrophoresis assay on isoperoxidase in the course of seed dormancy relieving for Fritillaria thunbergii Miq. at two different low temperatures].

The relieving of seed dormancy for Fritillaria thunbergii required 50 days at 8-10 degrees C and 80 days at 3-5 degrees C. During the relieving process, isoperoxidase pattern changes were studied by means of electrophoresis. The results showed that some new bands were detected, some original bands enhanced as the seeds were treated with a low temperature, and the changes of lsoperoxidase patterns were similar at two different low temperatures.

[Changes of PKC isoforms in induced differentiation of HL-60 cells by ATRA and PMA].

Human premyeloid leukemic cell line (HL-60) were differentiated along granulocytic or monocytic/phagocytic lineage respectively by the treatment of all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) or phorbol ester (PMA), which was demonstrated by morphological observation, NBT reduction test, specific and nonspecific assay of esterases. By use of immuno-histochemical method, the changes of protein kinase C (PKC) isoforms alpha, beta I and beta II after induced differentiation of HL-60 cells were studied. The results showed that ATRA led to 5.0, 2.8 and 4.2 times increase of PKC alpha, beta I and beta II isoforms respectively as compared with the undifferentiated control levels and translocation of PKC from membrane to cytosol. The level of PKC alpha and beta II isoforms in HL-60 cells induced by PMA were decreased, but the expression of PKC beta I was increased. Besides, PMA led these 3 kinds of PKC to be present in cell nucleus with different intensity. These results suggest that the sustained activation of PKC alpha and beta may be required for granulocytic differentiation of HL-60 cells, while nuclear translocation of PKC may relatively be an important step for differentiation of HL-60 cells to monocytes/macrophages.

[The study on three-dimensional laser scanning of dental model and computer aided set-up].

A new laser scanning and measurement method was introduced for dental model three-dimensional form. A laser diode was used as scanning light source, two CCDs (they were fixed specially) received the diffused light reflected from the dental model. The dental model rotating-moved back and forth, and horizontal moved from one side to another along horizontal axis simultaneously. Whole dental model can be scanned in 3 minutes, general precision was up to 0.03 mm. The computer can display distinctly three-dimensional images of dental model in different directions and give three-dimensional coordinate data, distance, angle, and remove teeth and make set-up after scanning. With advantages of high precision, fast speed and excellent object, the new method can be of an important applied value in orthodontic clinic.

Diagnosis and treatment of stage-III peripheral squamous cell carcinoma of right upper lung.

During a 12-year period, 44 patients were surgically treated for stage-III peripheral squamous cell carcinoma of the right upper lobe. The mean time from the discovery of the shadow in the right upper lobe to the confirmation of the diagnosis was 2 months. All patients underwent the resection of the right upper lobe with the dissection of the right mediastinal lymph nodes, among them, 4 patients had sleeve lobectomy of the right upper lobe. P-TNM staging: 23 cases were in stage-IIIa, 21 cases in stage-IIIb. The frequency of the postoperative complications was 20.4% (9/44 cases). The 1-year survival rate of all patients was 61% (27/44 cases). None of stage-IIIb patients lived longer than 3 years. The postoperative 3- and 5-year survival rates of stage-IIIa cases were 65.2% (15/23 cases) and 21.7% (5/23 cases) respectively. In this article, the patients' clinical features, the causes of delayed-diagnosis, the operative and postoperative management were discussed. We suggest that the stage-IIIa patients should be given surgical treatment, whereas, for the patients of stage-IIIb, palliative operation was given just for the purpose of reliving the symptoms.

Thymic carcinoma (report of 14 cases).

This paper reports of 14 cases of thymic carcinoma. Most of them with symptoms of chest pain, chest stuffy and discomfort, but without combined with extrathoracic syndromes. The tumors always were large in size and frequently invaded adjacent organs, hence with low resection rate. In this series, complete resection of tumor only 2 cases, partial resection in 7 cases, exploratory thoracotomy in 5 cases. Thymic carcinoma was an extremely malignant tumor with extensive invasion intrathoracally and early metastasis extrathoracally. The common sites of metastasis were bone, liver, lung and extrathoracic lymph nodes. Adjuvant therapy postoperatively was given to all patients. Follow-up of 1-8 years showed 10 cases death, of which 5 cases died within the first year after surgery, 3 cases within the second year. Four patients were still alive so far, in which 3 patients were within 1.5 years postoperatively. Pathological studies revealed 9 cases of squamous epithelial cell thymic carcinoma, 3 of lymphoepithelioma-like thymic carcinoma and 2 of small cell undifferentiate thymic carcinoma.

[Study on immobilized cells for producing alpha-amylase by using polyvinyl alcohol as the carrier (I)].

The method of immobilization of Bacillus subtilis by using polyvingyl alcohol(PVA) as the carrier of immobilized cells was studied. The effects of conditions of immobilization on the structure and mechanical strength of PVA immobilized cells and the ability for producing alpha-amylase of the immobilized cells were investigated. The comparative test of fermentation by using the immobilized cells with PVA as carrier and the immobilized cells with sodium glyinate as carrier and free cells was carried out in the same condition. The results showed that Bacillus substilis cells were immobilized efficently by PVA and the immobilized cells could normally grow and reproduce and produce alpha-amylase. In the same condition, the activity of alpha-amylase produced boy the immobilized cells was 28% higher than that produced by free cells and 11% higher than that produced by the cells immobilized with sodium glyinate as carrier.
