[Effect of somatostatin on human sphincter of Oddi motility].

The effect of somatostatin on the sphincter of Oddi was investigated in 20 subjects referred for endoscopic sphincter of Oddi manometry. Six patients had common bile duct dilatation, three had common bile duct slight dilatation, three had hepatic hilar carcinoma and eight had normal findings on endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography. A triple-lumen low compliance system was used to record the sphincter of Oddi basal pressure, phasic contraction frequency, amplitude, duration, and direction of wave propagation before and after intravenous administration of somatostatin in a dose of 250 micrograms. After a mean latency period of 1 min, there were significant changes including decreased basal pressure (P < 0.01) and decreased frequency of wave contraction (P < 0.01). The amplitude and duration of wave contraction and wave propagation sequence were not significantly influenced. Thus somatostatin has a significant inhibitory effect on the sphincter of Oddi activity, which may be helpful for biliary and pancreatic flow.

[Primary renal epithelioid angiosarcoma with transitional cell carcinoma in renal pelvis].

To understand the clinical characteristics of primary renal epithelioid angiosarcoma. We used clinical pathology, immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. Analysis and discussion about the case were combined with a review of the literature. We first report a female case of the left renal epithelioid angiosarcoma and concomitantly, transitional cell carcinoma developing from the renal pelvis at age 69. Epithelioid angiosarcoma showed positive results for FVIIIRA+, UEA, CD31, Cytokeratin and EMA. Weibel-Palade bodies were identified by electron microscopy. Primary renal epithelioid angiosarcoma was a rare clinical entity with a poor prognosis, which mimics epithelial tumor, both morphologically and immunohistochemically, and may be lead to misdiagnosis. The combined use of endothelial cell markers including FVIIIRA, CD31, UEA and electronmicroscopy can confirm the diagnosis of this neoplasm.

[Revascularization of isolated bone in dogs].

To elucidate whether the revascularization of isolated bone could be built and what is the influence on osteogenesis. We studied eighteen adult mongrel dogs and divided them into three groups in random. Osteotomy was performed on the two condyles of the tibia and the periosteum was removed. Two pieces of silica gel sheet were inserted into the gaps of osteotomy to block blood supply, then immobolization was made. The vascular bundle of anterior tibia artery and vein was separated and ligated. Subsequently, it was directly implanted into the isolated bar of tibia (Group A, n = 7). It implanted after holes were made (Group B, n = 7). Controls (Group C, n = 4) were observed without transplantation. The animals were investigated by angiography, casting mode of vascular net, mass and histologic and electromircroscopeic examination at different intervals. Osteonecrosis was occurred in the tested bone because of ischemia. The proliferation of vascular net was occurred and prosperous osteogenesis was found in the medullary cavity after transplanting a vascular bundle. Revascularization of necrotic bone was able to be established by transplanting a vascular bundle. Both membranous and lndochondral ossification play an important role in osteogenesis.

[Changes of extracellular matrix components in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis].

To clarify the roles of extracellular matrix in pulmonary fibrosis, we determined the levels of fibronectin (FN), hyaluronan (HA) and procollagen III (PC III) in peripheral blood and in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) in 13 patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and 11 normal subjects. The levels of FN, HA and PC III in BALF in patient group were not only significantly higher than those in own peripheral blood, but also significantly higher than those in BALF in control group. In patient group, the levels of FN and HA in BALF were respectively correlated with total cell numbers and neutrophils. PC III levels were related to alveolar macrophages. Also, there were positive correlation between FN, HA and PC III in BALF. These results suggested that the productions of FN, HA and PC III within the lung in IPF were increased and that the levels of FN, HA and PC III in BALF might reflect the activity of the disease from different aspects and play a role in estimating prognosis.

A clinical study on compound da huang (radix et Rhizoma rhei) preparations for improvement of senile persons' memory ability.

By comparison of the effects of the Compound Tong Jiang Oral Liquid with Da Huang added (TJ [symbol: see text]) and Qi Yin Oral Liquid (QY [symbol: see text]) without Da Huang on senile persons' memory ability, it is discovered that the effects of TJ on shortening the interval between defecations and the duration of defecation, and on improving senile persons' memory ability are significantly better than that of QY (P < 0.05). In addition, TJ can also decrease the serum content of lipid peroxidase and increase the superoxide dismutase activity in red blood cells (RBC). Thus, it is demonstrated that Dahuang and its agents possess the action of anti-senility and can improve mentality.

Protective effect of radix Salviae miltiorrhizae on apoptosis of neurons during focal cerebral ischemia and reperfusion injury.

We have found that Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae (RSM) plays a protective role in ischemic brain injury, which attracted us to investigate the effect of RSM on apoptosis of neurons during cerebral ischemia and reperfusion. The apoptotic cells in ischemic brains at different reperfusion intervals were tested with the method of TdT-mediated dUTP-DIG nick end labeling (TUNEL), and the effect of RSM on the apoptosis of neurons was studied in left middle cerebral artery (LMCA) occlusion in rat models (n = 18). The results showed that few scattered apoptotic cells were observed in right cerebral hemisphere after LMCA occlusion and reperfusion, and that a lot of apoptotic cells were found in left ischemic cerebral cortex and caudoputamen at 12 h reperfusion, and they reached peak at 24-48 h reperfusion. However, in rats pretreated with RSM, the number of apoptotic cells in left cortex and caudoputamen reduced significantly and the neuronal damage was much milder at 24 h reperfusion as compared with those of saline-treated rats. From this study, we conclude that administration of RSM can reduce the apoptotic of neurons induced by cerebral ischemia and reperfusion and afford significant cerebroprotection in the model of focal cerebral ischemia and reperfusion.

ET-1 gene expression of rat brain during ischemia and reperfusion and the protective effect of radix Salviae miltiorrhizae.

Endothelin-1 (ET-1) gene expression of rat brain during ischemia and reperfusion as well as the effect of Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae (RSM) were studied with in situ hybridization. It was found that ET-1 gene expression of cerebral cortex and caudate-putamen was markedly increased both in 24 hours of ischemia and 24 hours of reperfusion groups (P < 0.01, P < 0.05). In RSM-treated rats, although the ET-1 gene expressions of ischemia and reperfusion sides were also increased as compared with contralateral cortex and caudate-putamen, they were significantly lower in RSM-treated rats than those of controls (P < 0.05, P < 0.01 respectively). The present study indicated that RSM can partly inhibit ET-1 gene expression of cerebral cortex and caudate-putamen during ischemia and reperfusion. This may be one of the protective mechanisms of RSM on cerebral ischemia and reperfusion.

[Epidemiologic study of diabetic retinopathy in Capital Steel Company].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence and risk factors of diabetic retinopathy. METHOD: 29,938 subjects aged 30 years or older were screened for diabetic retinopathy in Capital Steel Company. RESULTS: Among the 955 subjects (3.19%) proved to have diabetes mellitus, 534 subjects underwent ophthalmoscopic and fluorescein angiographic examinations. Diabetic retinopathy was present in 90 of the 534 (16.9%). CONCLUSIONS: Diabetic retinopathy is correlated with the duration of diabetes, type of diabetes treatment, and fasting glucose level. Other factors have no significant association with the retinopathy. By multiple logistic analysis, duration of diabetes and fasting glucose level are the most important risk factors related to the retinopathy.

[The biomechanical characteristics of the fasciocutaneous flap during healing phases].

Pedicled fasciocutaneous and ordinary flaps, with the ratio of length to width of 2.5:1, were elevated on the lateral side of either hind limb in 6 pigs. Postoperatively the strength at the healing site was greatly lower than that of the normal skin and much lower at the distal part of the flaps. In the fasciocutaneous flap, the strength was stronger than that of the ordinary flap at the corresponding sites. The healing strength increased with time. At the end of the fourth postoperative week, there were no obvious differences of healing strength between different sites in the fasciocutaneous flap. Yet the healing strength was still weaker at distal part in the ordinary flap. The stress-strain curves shifted to left in both flaps. There were no obvious differences between the proximal and distal sites in fasciocutaneous flap but there was difference in the ordinary flap. With good biomechanical characteristics in healing strength and flexibility, the fasciocutaneous flap is suitable for repairing soft tissue defects in complicated or special area, but attention should be paid to the limitation to ratio of the length to width.

[Effects of CD11/CD18 on adhesion between endothelial cell and PMN and its expression in early stage postburn].

This study was to investigate the expressions of CD11a/CD18 and CD11b/CD18 on burn patient's polymorphonuclear neutrophil (PMN) in early postburn stage and effects of CD11/CD18 mAb on PMN-EC adhesion and endothelial cell (EC) damage induced by PMN. Adhesive rate between PMN and EC, the filtration coefficient (kf) and monolayer volume flux (Jv) were determined after incubating burn patient's PMN with human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) for 24 hours. CD11a/CD18 monoclonal antibodies (mAb) and CD11b/CD18 mAb were used to pretreat burn patient's PMNs in order to demonstrate the role of CD11/CD18 in PMN-EC adhesion and EC damage. Expressions of CD11a/CD18 and CD11b/CD18 were determined by flow cytometry 1, 3, 5, 7 d postburn. The results indicated that expressions of CD11a/CD18 and CD11b/CD18 on burn patient's PMNs increased quickly, reaching the peak on day 1 postburn and remained in high level till 7 days postburn. The values of Kf and Jv were increased markedly after burn patient's PMNs was incubated with HUVECs, which were cultured on micropore filter membrane. When burn patient's PMNs were pretreated with CD11a/CD18 mAb and CD11b/CD18 mAb, PMN-HUVEC adhesive rate was inhibited by 70%-80% and the values of Jv and kf were decreased significantly. It suggested that there were increased expressions of CD11a/CD18 and CD11b/CD18 on PMNs after burn injury. Burn patient's PMNs could damage EC and increased EC monolayer permeability (kf, Jv). CD11/CD18 mAb inhibited PMN-EC adhesion and attenuated EC damage induced by PMNs.

[Significance of glycosaminoglycans content in developing mechanism of cleft palate].

To explore significance of Glycosaminoglycans content in the development of embryo and forming mechanism of cleft palate, Dexamethason acetate was injected into the abdomen of NIH mouse on the 12th day of gestation to induce cleft palate mouse embryo model. Then by taking cranio-maxillary coronary sections, stained with Alcian blue/PAS and quantitatively analysing the area of the palatal process covered by glycosaminoglycans using a TDS-90 photodigital system with computer. Results indicate that on 13(12) day(hour) of gestation the colour of Alcian blue starts to show in the palatal process. By then, the area covered by glycosaminoglycans in the normal group is 4.69 mm whereas for the experimental group is 2.40 mm, showing a significant statistical difference (P < 0.05). The area of the palatal process covered by glycosaminoglycans gradually increases as the embryo developes, but is distinctly smaller in experimental than in the normal group (P > 0.05). This proves that there's a relationship between the level of glycosaminoglycans in the palatal process and development of cleft palates.

[Quantitative determination of dracorhodin in Daemonorops draco B1. and traditional Chinese medicines containing Daemonorops draco B1. by HPLC].

A reversed phase high performance liquid chromatographic mertod for the determination of Dracorhodin in Daemonorops draco B1. and Traditional Chinese Medicines containing Daemonorops draco B1. has been developed so as to set the quality standard for Sichuan Jinyao. The result showed that the components of Dracorhodin were separated by ODS column, with MeOH-0.05 mol/L NaH2PO4 (51:50) (pH = 3.10-3.15, adjusted with H2PO4) acting as the mobile phase. The other high retentive components were eluted by methanol; thus the analytical time was reduced. The method is simple and accurate.
