[Comparison of Chinese traditional therapy combined with Western medicine and Western medicine alone in the treatment of uveitis].

Seventy nine eyes of 46 patients with uveitis were treated with two therapeutic methods. One was mainly Chinese traditional dialectic therapy combined with western medicine. The other was western medica treatment using mainly corticosteroid. The group treated with combined methods (37 eyes of 22 cases) showed an effective rate of 91.8%. The group treated only with western medicine (42 eyes of 24 cases) showed a 66.6% < effective rate. In a follow-up period of six months to one year. The disease relapsed in 13 eyes out of the 33 eyes in the combined method group with recurrent rate of 39.4%. The recurrent rate of the western medical treatment was 86.4% (19 eyes out of the 22 eyes). It shows the Chinese traditional dialectic therapy combined with eastern medicine is better than the solely western medical treatment.

[A preliminary survey on the growing tempo of Chinemys reevesii (Gray)].

The growing tempo of tortoises is closely related with the temperature and intake of food. In suitable temperature range (20-28 degrees C), the intake increases with the rise of temperature and the growth accordingly accelerates. In the dormant period, the tortoise consumes more energy as ambient temperature rises.

[Observation on prevention of hepatitis B virus transmission between newly-married couples by HBsAg vaccine].

Sixty-one young men and women, whose finances were found to be HBsAg (+) or partly HBeAg (+), had undergone medical examination before marriage. They were divided into two groups and given HBV vaccine or placebo before marriage. Six months later, the seroconversion rates of anti-HBs in these two groups were 93.33% (28/30) and 6.45% (2/31), respectively. The difference was statistically significant (P less than 0.01). Six-twelve months after marriage, the HBsAg positive rates were 6.67% (2/30) and 61.29% (9/31), respectively. This difference was highly significant (P less than 0.001). The protective rate of HB vaccine reached 89.12%. The results suggested that it is important to vaccinate the susceptible persons to be married to enhance their immunity against HBV, especially when the finances were found to be HBsAg positive (+) before marriage.

Monoclonal anti-human T cell antibody and PAP-s conjugate--preparation and selective cytotoxic properties on leukemic cell.

Pokeweed antiviral protein (PAP-s) was prepared from seeds of Phytolacca americana. Monoclonal antibody against human pan-T lymphocyte Wu71 was linked to PAP-s by a disulfide bond. The results of SDS-PAGE, double immunodiffusion of active monoclonal antibody and PAP-s showed that the conjugate was highly cytotoxic to the human T-leukemic cell line CEM, but not to antigen-negative cell line SP2/O. At a concentration of 10(-9) mol/L, 76.4% of the target cells were killed, as compared with 10.1% at 10(-9) mol/L of free PAP-s. Treatment of the CEM cells with conjugate at 10(-9) mol/L reduced their rate of protein synthesis by 72.4%, as determined with 14C-leucine incorporation. The immunotoxin may be useful for the in-vitro eradication of leukemic cells in autologous bone marrow transplantation to leukemia patients.

[Long-term follow-up of the ulnar nerve repair: report of 42 cases].

A long term follow-up for 42 cases of ulnar nerve repair was reported in this article, and the reason of bad function were analysed. They are: 1. As long as the injured ulnar nerve was sutured perfectly and without delay, the result would be satisfying. 2. The follow-up examination of the repaired nerve showed all the paralysed intrinsic muscles would recover in certain extent. Abductor digiti quinti, adductor pollicis and flexor digiti quinti brevis usually restored easily. Among the intrinsic muscles the best result of the first dorsal interosseous and the first palmar interosseous muscles were obtained. The functional recovery of the second and third palmar interosseous muscles usually was poor. 3. After repairing of the injured ulnar nerve, recovery of the claw hand deformity usually takes long time, so the operative correction of the deformity should not be performed until 2.5 years.

[Multilocular cystic nephroma--one case report].

Multilocular cystic nephroma is an uncommon renal neoplasm which have two peaks in the incidence, one is in the childhood and the others is in the middle age group. This tumor is easily confused with other renal neoplasm in clinically, radiologically, and pathologically, particularly nephroblastoma. The clinical presentation, radiological findings, differentiated diagnosis and treatment in one case of multilocular cystic nephroma is described.

[Investigation report on the resources of Chinemys reevesii (Gray)].

Our on-the-spot investigation has indicated that the tortoise population as natural resources has been on the decrease ever since the sixties. The reason for the decrease lies in some natural factors as well as the indiscriminate catching and killing by man. As a result, the female tortoises remarkably over whelm the male ones in number, which leads to a drop in the natural rate of breeding.

[Iatrogenic central artery embolism].

This paper presented 3 cases of central retinal artery embolism (CRAE) caused by the drug injection at the head and neck. In two of the three cases, the emboli were formed by the suspended drug which entered CRA resulting in the occlusion. Another case was caused by the large amount of meglucamini diatrizoas which was injected too quickly during angiography. The CRA was filled up with fluorescein in a very short time, which lead to ischemia and hypoxia of the retina. This paper stressed the importance of early diagnosis and prompt treatment. The authors also Discussed the method of drug injection at the head and neck.

[Obliterative peripheral retinal vascular disease in children].

Obliterative peripheral retinal vascular disease in children is a rare disease. Only 4 cases had been reported abroad. No case of this disease was reported in China before. This paper reported a 13-year-old girl suffering from this disease in both eyes. Neovascular glaucoma of her left eye has developed and that of her right eye was still in early stage. Fluorescein angiography changes, diagnosis and differential diagnosis, pathogenesis and treatment of the disease were discussed.

A comparison of mathematical models for regeneration in acutely responding tissues.

A mathematical model is presented to describe the regenerative response of mouse gut epithelal cells to radiation. The model, derived from radiobiological principles, predicts the cellular surviving fraction following any irradiation regimen. There are three basic elements to the model (a) a single dose survival curve, either the linear-quadratic or the two-component model, (b) a part to incorporate the regenerative response, either a Gompertzian or a logistic growth and (c) a part to accomodate the delayed onset of regeneration, including either a mitotic delay, a fixed time delay, both, or neither. The models are similar in spirit, but different in detail to the model proposed by Cohen. The various models are evaluated on three large datasets, where the response is cell survival in the jejunum or the colon measured using the crypt colony assay. The models were fit and the parameter estimates and standard errors were obtained from the raw observations using non-linear least squares. It is concluded that Gompertzian growth gives a better fit to the data than logistic growth; the delayed onset of regeneration in these tissues can be best accounted for by a mitotic delay or a mitotic delay plus a fixed time delay, and there is little to choose between the linear-quadratic and the two-component model. There was a strong relationship between the tissue cell cycle time and the regenerative response, the mitotic delay being longer and the rate of regeneration slower for the colon than for the jejunum.

An assessment of the use of Bayes' Theorem for forecasting in public health: the case of epidemic meningitis in China.

A mathematical model based upon Bayes' Theorem (BT) was used to forecast the occurrence of epidemic cerebrospinal meningitis (ECM) in ten communities in North China. Reports of ECM from each ten-day period during the meningitis season and records of special population movement during 1960-82 were analysed to establish forecast models. Calibration, split-sample, random-sample selection, as well as actual forecast tests, were used to check the efficiency of the models. For all the tests, the theoretical occurrence of ECM forecast by the BT method was compared with the observational data. Since the BT method offers efficiency and convenience, it is recommended for use in planning for the prevention and control of ECM in China.

Electromorphic characterization and description of conserved epitopes of the lipooligosaccharides of group A Neisseria meningitidis.

We studied the lipooligosaccharides (LOS) of 28 group A Neisseria meningitidis of epidemiologically diverse origins to investigate whether each of the LOS serotypes found in serogroup A could be identified physically as well as antigenically. Using a dot blot assay with LOS-specific monoclonal antibodies (MAbs), we identified four epitopes that were serotype specific. The LOS from strains of each serotype were electromorphically and antigenically distinct when analyzed by silver-stained sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and immunoblotting. The LOS of L8 strains contained a 3,600-Mr component that bound the L8 MAb. The LOS of L9 strains contained two major components of 4,500 and 4,200 Mr. They bound the L9 MAb to the larger component. The LOS of L10 strains had a single major component of 4,000 Mr that bound the L10 MAb. The LOS of L11 strains contained a major 3,600-Mr component that could not be distinguished from the 3,600-Mr LOS of L8 strains by SDS-PAGE but that bound the L11 MAb. LOS of group A strains contained a highly conserved epitope in addition to a serotype-specific epitope. This was identified by a MAb that bound to all the strains on dot-blots and to multiple LOS components of various Mrs on immunoblots. We conclude that the LOS which bear the L9, L10, and L11 determinants are physically distinct and can be identified by SDS-PAGE or MAb binding or both. L8 and L11 are both borne on a 3.6-kilodalton LOS and can only be distinguished serologically.
