Transient accommodative paresis and pupillary disturbances are some of the less known and uncommon complications of peripheral retinal laser treatment extending over at least one third of the retinal periphery. They are the result of damage by the laser applications to parasympathetic nerve fibers that lie beneath the coagulated area and innervate the ciliary body and iris sphincter. Six myopic patients who suffered from these complications following peripheral laser treatment for retinal tears are presented. A mechanism of direct damage to ciliary muscle fibers during photocoagulation is proposed.
A population-based study found an overall incidence rate of symptomatic retinal vein occlusion (RVO) in a 4-year period to be 2.14 per 1,000 in the 40 years and over age group. When cases found among glaucoma clinic patients were separated from the remainder of the population there was marked difference in the incidence rate of RVO in the same time period (1.85 and 17.3 per 1,000, respectively). The rate of RVO increased significantly (p less than 0.001) with age in the general population from 0.93 per 1,000 among persons under 64 years of age to 5.36 per 1,000 among persons over 65. The increase in the rate of RVO by age was less dramatic in the glaucoma clinic population. The two populations also differed in the frequency of the occlusion type: the ratio of the rate of branch vein occlusion to central vein occlusion was 3.2:1 in the general population, but equally distributed in the glaucoma clinic population. Persons with increased intraocular pressure and/or glaucoma were found to have a higher prevalence of RVO than persons with no history of elevated intraocular pressure.
This report describes a young high-myopic patient who developed rubeosis iridis with peripheral retinal neovascularization one year after a circular buckling operation. Subsequently, vitreous bleeding and exudation led to traction retinal detachment which was treated successfully by anterior vitrectomy and cryopexy. It is suggested that this case represents a mild form of anterior-segment ischemia, combined with peripheral retinal ischemia.
A randomized, controlled study was conducted in 51 patients to investigate the effect of aspirin administration on traumatic hyphema. Aspirin tablets 500 mg tid were administered for seven days. Rebleeding was found in three of 23 eyes of patients who had received aspirin and in two of 28 eyes of control patients. This difference was not statistically significant (P = .405), proving that aspirin is not an important factor in rebleeding in patients with hyphema.

This study evaluated the association between intraocular pressure and various sociodemographic characteristics, ocular findings, and cardiovascular risk factors in a population screened for glaucoma. A total of 2594 subjects older than 40 years residing in three urban areas of southern Israel participated. Of those screened 6.1% had a raised intraocular pressure (IOP greater than or equal to 21). The mean IOP increased with age, was higher among persons born in Africa or Asia than those born in Europe or America, higher among myopes than hypermetropes and among those with an enlarged cup-disc ratio (CDR). Analysis of variance tests indicated that refractive status, CDR, age, country of birth, and diabetes were each independently associated with IOP. In addition, associations between raised intraocular pressure and age, country of birth, myopia, CDR, diabetes, and glaucoma in the family were found.
Bilateral lateral rectus resection was performed on both previously recessed medial rectus muscles in 23 patients with residual esotropia. The operation reduced the deviation in all patients, but successful treatment was achieved only in 52%. The advantages and disadvantages of this surgical approach are discussed.
A case of early childhood Coats's disease in a ten-month-old boy is presented. The lactic dehydrogenase aqueous:serum ratio was very high (6:1). A ratio higher than 3:1 in Coats's disease or in any other eye infection has never been reported except in cases of retinoblastoma. Since retinoblastoma does not always show calcification in x-rays, it may be concluded that in certain cases it would be impossible to discriminate between Coats's disease and retinoblastoma (except in pathologic analysis) with any available diagnostic tools.
Patients with congenital esotropia and high myopia were surgically treated by recession of both medial rectus muscles. The results are presented and discussed.

Iridotomy with red krypton laser instead of blue-green argon laser was performed on 68 eyes with various types of angle-closure glaucoma. Patent iridotomy was obtained in all the eyes, mostly in one working session. In eight eyes secondary closure by pigment needed reopening with a few applications at the iridotomy site. There were no immediate or late complications of importance, the main advantage of the technique being the avoidance of the corneal epithelial and endothelial burns which commonly occur during argon laser iridotomy, particularly when the anterior chamber is shallow.
A case of orbital cellulitis in which the causative organism was Streptococcus faecalis--the first such case to the authors' knowledge--is reported. Although Hemophilus influenzae and pneumococci are most frequently encountered in orbital cellulitis, this case shows that Streptococcus faecalis may also be responsible. Prompt identification of the bacteria is urged.
