It is the purpose of this study to investigate the healing process in chronic sinusitis by means of a fiberoptic telescope. The patients were divided into 3 groups, in which various combinations of operative techniques were used. Group 1:53 patients with moderate chronic sinusitis. In this group endonasal ethmoidectomy and endonasal exposure of the sphenoidal sinus were performed. Group 2:73 patients with moderate or severe sinusitis. In this group a Caldwell-Luc operation was added to the operations which were used in group I. Group 3:8 patients, in which only endonasal ethmoidectomy was performed. In most cases, the maxillary sinus was cured, but in some of the cases the drainage opening was closed at an early stage. The epithelization of the ethmoidal sinus is mostly completed in about one month after the surgical operation. Adhesions between middle turbinate and lateral wall were seen regularly. Hypertrophic scars were observed in the posterior ethmoid, the ethmoidal roof and the lamina papyracea. We classified the healing process into 4 types. All postoperative infections were treated by antibiotics. Adhesions and scar tissue formations were treated endoscopically.

A 7-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl suffered from unilateral disciform keratitis and iritis associated with varicella. While they were treated with topical corticosteroid, idoxuridine, and atropine drops, dendritic lesions typical of herpes zoster appeared four months after the onset of eruptive skin lesions. Using the direct immunofluorescent method, we showed varicella-zoster virus antigen in the epithelial cells scraped from the dendritic lesion.
Exogenous arachidonate addition to the coupled system of platelets and aortic microsomes resulted in production of TXA2 and PGI2 (detected as the stable degradation products, TXB2 and 6-keto PGF1 alpha, respectively). Imidazole, papaverine and dipyridamole increased PGI2 and decreased TXA2 in the coupled system. All of these agents inhibited TXA2 formation by platelets from arachidonate. Nitroglycerin did not show any effect on PGI2 and TXA2 formation in the coupled system and on TXA2 formation by platelets. In contrast with these compounds, in spite of showing no inhibitory effect on TXA2 formation by platelets alone, 2-nicotinamidoethyl nitrate (SG-75) increased PGI2 and decreased TXA2 in the coupled system. It is suggested that SG-75 accelerated the conversion of PGH2 to PGI2 so that smaller amounts of TXA2 was produced in the coupled system.
Morphological changes associated with cyclical reductions of blood pressure in the partially constricted coronary artery of anesthetized dogs have been examined. In the constricted coronary segments, smooth and diffuse spasm, rosary-like spasm, a localized narrowing indicating a platelet aggregate or thrombus, and no obvious change were observed during the pressure reductions in 3, 5, 2 and 5 of 15 trials of 12 preparations, respectively. In the distal segments of the same preparations, segmental spasm and diffuse spasm were observed during the pressure reductions in 8 and one trials, respectively. The changes in the constricted and distal segments appeared simultaneously or independently. The change which indicates obstruction of the distal segments with platelet aggregates or thrombi was observed in none. The results indicate that spasm, but not platelet aggregates or thrombi, in the constricted segments and/or distal segments plays the major role in the cyclical reductions of blood pressure in the partially constricted coronary artery.
