A retrospective study was done in order to examine the association between aortic stenosis (AS) and gastrointestinal tract (GIT) bleeding. Four groups of patients included a group of 152 patients with AS, a control group of 152 patients with MS, and another two groups of 154 patients each with and without GIT bleeding. GIT bleeding of known and of idiopathic sources was significantly more prevalent among patients with AS (three and four patients, respectively) than among those with MS (none). Moreover, AS was significantly more prevalent in association with idiopathic GIT bleeding (seven out of 24, 29.1%), in comparison to its association with bleeding from a known source (two out of 130, 1.5%), and its incidence in routinely admitted patients without GIT bleeding (three out of 154, 1.9%). This study supports the assumption that GIT bleeding may be associated with AS.

The prevalence of ear lobe crease (ELC) was determined in 421 patients with myocardial infarction (MI) and in 421 controls. A higher prevalence (p less than 0.05) of ELC was found in MI patients (77 percent) in comparison to controls (40 percent), regardless of age. In addition, a higher prevalence was found in patients in whom MI was combined with diabetic retinopathy or hypertension, and in Ashkenazi Jews compared to non-Ashkenazi Jews. Ear lobe biopsies in 12 subjects revealed tears of the elastic fibers in all subjects with ELC, and prearteriole wall thickening in subjects with MI and/or ELC, but not in the 2 subjects with neither MI nor ELC. The early appearance of ELC may imply the existence of coronary heart disease with or without coronary risk factors.
A patient with ulcerative colitis developed eosinophilic pneumonia, sinus tachycardia, skin rashes, headache and insomnia following treatment with Salazopyrin. The pneumonia as well as the other side effects resolved spontaneously following discontinuation of the drug and reappeared when Salazopyrin was readministered.
A 68 year-old woman, treated 30 years ago by collapse therapy for tuberculosis of the lung, presently developed the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone scretion. The investigation revealed only an extensive right fibrothorax. The possible relation between the latter and her present illness is discussed.
A patient with acute myelogenous leukemia developed severe hypophosphatemia manifesting by extreme weakness, confusion, loss of sphincter control, nuchal rigidity, hyperesthesia, hemolysis, congestive heart failure and liver dysfunction. The possible causes for this condition were starvation, parenteral glucose and saline administration, sepsis, hypokalemia and treatment with acetazolamide. A dramatic improvement was noted following phosphate administration.

Circulating anticoagulant (CA) and particularly lupus anticoagulant are commonly associated with biological false-positive tests for syphilis (BFP-STS) in patients with collagen diseases. CA was presently found in the sera of 8 out of 30 subjects with chronic BFP-STS without collagen or autoimmune diseases. It was not found in any of the 21 patients with various stages of syphilis. In 5 out of 21 elderly subjects (age greater than 70 years) in whom a positive BFP-STS was detected, there was no CA. It is concluded that the association between CA and BFP-STS is found only in patients with collagen and autoimmune diseases and in some of the younger chronic BFP-STS reactors. It is not detected in syphilitic patients or elderly subjects in whom a high incidence of BFP-STS can be found. The difference in the incidence of this association is probably due to the differing biologic behaviour of these autoantibodies.

Cryoglobulins were detected in six patients with chronic liver diseases. Three of them had postnecrotic cirrhosis, two had chronic active hepatitis and one had primary biliary cirrhosis. In none of them HBsAG or its antibody were detected. The cryoglobulin appeared during the course of the disease in two patients, one with chronic active hepatitis and the other with primary biliary cirrhosis. There was no proof for cause and effect relationship between the liver disease with cryoglobulinemia and an eventual infection with hepatitis b virus. The cryoglobulinemia might be due to the liver disease per se and it seems that it is not always related to an infection caused by the hepatitis B virus.
IgG, IgA and IgM serum concentrations were determined in 605 healthy children and 398 adults, using a radial immunodiffusion technique. IgG levels were found to be high at birth, fall sharply at two weeks of age, reach a minimum at 3 months and then gradually rise to adult levels which are attained by the age of 9 years. IgA and IgM are low at birth, rise gradually and reach adult levels by 17-18 years. No significant differences, between male and female subjects were found in each of the age groups studied.
