[Surgical correction of penile torsion].

To treat the physiological dysfunction and psychic disturbances of the patients with penile torsion, a variety of surgery were used to eliminate its abnormality. A modificed of Nesbit procedure was used to correct the major malformation, several parallel ellipsoid patches which axis forms an angle of 45-degree with that of the penis were removed from the tunica albuginea on the convex side of the corpora cavernosa. Besides, stitches were necessary to suture the tunica albuginea to the opposite pubis. It was suitable plicate the tunica albuginea on the convex side of the corpora cavernosa for mild case. The penises of the patients had a normal appearance at both flexible and errect conditions during a 3-month follow-up. Penile torsion could be corrected satisfactorily by shortening the convex side of the corpora cavernosa with excision of ellipsoids or plication of the tunica albuginea, which angulates 45-degree with the penile axis.

[Clinical studies on pulpitis and periapical periodontitis caused by traumatic occlusion].

89 cases including 100 teeth with pulpitis and apical periodontitis caused by traumatic occlusion were clinically observed. All teeth are caries-free, no any dental disease, and no pocket formation. But there is a distinct evidence of marked occlusal trauma, such as premature contact and occlusal interference. The single-root teeth are usually involved. When subjected to vitality testing the teeth associated with the periapical lesions sometimes yield positive response (about 30%). The result of investigation endodontic treatment demonstrated that the presence of predisposing factors of trauma from occlusion led to decrease of endodontic success.

[The effect of artificial traumatic occlusion on the pulp and periodontium in rat molars].

In order to study relationship between the period of occlusal trauma and pulpal and periodontal tissues, 44 rats were used in experimental occlusal trauma. The pulpal and periodontal tissues of rat molars were observed by histological examination and micrographic examination. The results showed that the damage of pulp became more serious as time went on, but periodontium appeared adaptive changes. The same changing area in periodontal tissues were observed between histological section and micrographic film. The results provide experimental evidences for the pathology and pathogeny of pulpitis and perioapical periodontitis caused by occlusal trauma.

[Effects of short-term tone exposure on DPOAEs].

Test parameter combinations are known to affect DPOAE measurement. The present study was attempted to find out if different test parameter combinations affect DPOAEs' utility in reflecting the change of cochlear function. Pure tones of moderate intensity (82 dB SPL) and short duration (3 min) were introduced into rabbit's ear canal to cause temporary change of cochlear mechanics, and the change of amplitude of 2f1-f2 DPOAE representing 10 kHz over 10 minutes after the exposure was monitored using equal- and different primary level combinations. It was found that, under the same exposure condition, 2f1-f2 DPOAEs induced by primaries of different levels (L2 = L1 - 12 dB) had showed more initial reduction in amplitude and slower recovery than that induced by primaries of equal levels (L1 = L2). The difference may indicate that there are multiple physiological processes that contribute to the generation of 2f1-f2 DPOAE and that change of DPOAE test parameters may selectively reveal different DPOAE generating processes.

[IL-8 in experimental proliferative vitreoretiopathy induced by macrophages].

PURPOSE: To measure the concentration changes of IL-8 during the development of experimental proliferative vitreoretiopathy (PVR) induecd by macrophages and explore the effect on the inflammatory cells at the early stage of the model. METHODS: Rabbit PVR model was induced by homogenous macrophages. The vitreous, agueous and vein blood were taken at different periods and IL-8 levels in them were measured with an ELISA kit. RESULTS: The IL-8 level reached its peak of 1,325 pg/ml at 14th day in the model which was 14 times as the level of controls. The level then decreased to 48 pg/ml at 28th day after macrophage injection. CONCLUSION: The changes of IL-8 in the model were parallel to the inflammatory reaction during the development of PVR, suggesting that IL-8 may play an important role the inflammatory cells' infiltrating and migrating to the vitreous.

[Taxonomic studies of two Streptomycete strains AS 4.693 and AS 4.702].

The "setae group" of the genus Streptomyces was originally the genus Kitasatosporia (Omura, 1982). On the basis of 16s rRNA analysis, Wellington(1992) proposed to reduce Kitasatosporia to synonymy with Streptomyces as a species group--"setae group". Two Streptomyces strains, AS 4.693 and AS 4.702(deposited in CCCCM) were examined by using morphological, chemical and nucleic acid ribtyping methods. It was revealed that these two strains have similarity to the type strain Streptomyces setae JCM3304T, and they share 100% DNA homology with JCM 3304T. Therefore, we propose that the strain AS 4.693 be transferred to the "setae group" of genus Streptomyces as Streptomyces setae subsp. irregularis nov. and the strain AS 4.702 as Streptomyces setae subsp. flexuofradiae nov.

The correlations of clinicopathologic features, hormone receptor level with the prognosis of breast cancer: report of 308 cases in elderly women.

OBJECTIVE: This study analyses the clinicopathologic features and hormone receptor level of breast cancer in aged patients (> or = 60 years) and explores the related factors of the prognosis. METHODS: For all patients, the clinical data and pathologic data were reviewed retrospectively. Follow-up data were available. Of the 308 cases, tumor specimens in 130 patients were subjected to hormone receptor analysis by a dextran-coated charcoal technique. RESULTS: Of the 308 cases, 82 cases were in stage I, 147 cases in stage II, 66 cases in stage III, and 13 cases in stage IV. Metastatic rate (axillary lymph nodes) was 35.7%. The overall postoperative 5- and 10-year survival rates were 70.8% and 50.5%, respectively. Estrogen receptor and progesterone receptor positive rates were 66.9% and 40.0%, respectively. The survival rate was decreased with the increasing grade of TNM (P < 0.01). The mortality rate of the breast cancer was related to the clinical stage and the hormone receptor level (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: There was a relatively good prognosis in this series. The size of tumor, number of metastatic nodes and hormone receptor level were related to the prognosis.

Magnetic resonance images of the hypothalamic-pituitary area in idiopathic growth deficiency.

In order to describe the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in hypothalamic-pituitary area and its clinical relevance in patients with idiopathic growth hormone deficiency (IGHD), the MR imagings of 26 patients with IGHD were analyzed. On MRI, 24 out of 26 cases (92.3%) showed apparent pituitary upper margin depression; 8 out of 26 cases (30.8%) showed definite pituitary stalk transection; 22 out of 26 cases (84.6%) showed absence of the normal posterior pituitary bright spot. The bright lipidlike signal on T1W1 images at the median eminence distal to the breaking point (so-called ectopic posterior lobe) was found in 4 out of 26 cases (15.4%). According to the MRI findings of the pituitary stalks, the 26 cases were divided into three groups; group A of 8 cases (31%) characterized by the definite transaction of stalk; group B of 13 cases (50%) defined by the possible stalk transection; and group C of 5 cases (19%) with no definite stalk transection. MRI findings were consistent with the clinical and endocrine tests. The stalk transection was statistically significantly difference in insulin test, L-dopa/p test, and height standard deviation score (P < 0.05). The MRI of hypothalamic-pituitary area may differentiate partial IGHD form stalk-transected, doubtful transection and without transection.

Evidence of increased endogenous carbon monoxide production in newborn rat endotoxicosis.

Carbon monoxide is thought to serve as a new endogenous mediator in the pathogenesis of sepsis and septic shock. In newborn rat endotoxicosis, carbon monoxide levels in the circulation as well as liver, kidney and lung were found to be significantly increased (P < 0.05). Moreover, the elevations of carbon monoxide correlated with enhanced nitric oxide production as indicated by nitrite/nitrate levels (P < 0.05). Our present data showed for the first time that endogenously produced carbon monoxide was increased during the course of shock-like states, which suggested that the role of carbon monoxide in sepsis and septic shock might worth further study.

Association of Helicobacter pylori infection with precancerous lesions and stomach cancer: a case-control study in Yangzhong County.

Previous study has raised H. pylori infection as a suspected biologic risk factor for gastric cancer. A comparative case-control study involving precancerous lesions and gastric cancer was conducted in Yanzhong county, an area with one of the highest rates of gastric cancer in China to study the relationship between the H. pylori infection and gastric cancer. Subjects in the study were all randomly selected participants of a screening program for gastric cancer sponsored by the Cancer Institute of CAMS in cooperation with Yangzhong county Hospital. Totally, 125 normal controls, 108 superficial gastritis, 111 atrophic gastritis and 110 gastric cancer patients were included in our study according to endoscopy and pathology result. Status of H. pylori infection was evaluated by measuring IgG antibody in plasma with ELISA assay. Our result showed Odds ratios of H. pylori infection were higher among gastritis and cancer groups, 4.5 (95% CI 2.5-7.9) for superficial gastritis, 6.3 (95% CI 3.4-12) for atrophic gastritis, 3.3 (95% CI 1.9-5.9) for gastric cancer. It was found in our study that consumption of pickled vegetables and drinking dirty water increased the relative risk of H. pylori infection for both precancerous lesions and gastric cancer and that H. pylori infection had higher risk of atrophic gastritis and gastric cancer for males and also higher risk of atrophic gastritis for olders. Our results strongly support the casual role played by H. pylori infection in the carcinogenic process of gastric mucosa.

[Measurement and evaluation of radiation dose distribution of gamma-ray altimeter in static test for recovery capsule during simulated landing].

The gamma-ray altimeter, containing a gamma-radioactive source 137Cs with activity of 2.96 x 10(10) Bq, was used to detect the height of the spacecraft recovery capsule during landing. To measure the gamma-dose distribution near to the guidance section, especially at position where the useful load is located in recovery capsule, gamma-dose field at the test-site for one machine test was measured by means of a gamma-dose rate meter FJ-317C and a gamma-dose meter ANRI-01-02. The result showed that the absorbed dose rate at 5 meters from gamma-source on the ground is as low as the radiation protection limit when the altimeter is down to 0.16 m from the ground. The ground reflection effect for gamma-ray decreases as height of the recovery capsule increases. Therefore, the gamma-dose level at useful load in the recovery capsule will meet the requirements of flight safety.

[Inhibition of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) by moroxydine, allicin, alpha-interferon and their joint application].

This paper reported the inhibition of respiratory syncytial virus by Moroxydine (ABOB), Allicin, alpha-interferon and their joint application. The results indicated that each of the three drugs inhibited RSV in HeLa cells, and the effective dosage of ABOB was 100 mg/L, alpha-interferon 1.5 x 10(4) U/L and Allicin one eight hundred thousandth of the pure material. The combinations of 3 drugs showed synergism without antagonism, this not only decreased the dosage, toxicity but also enhanced the inhibition effects on respiratory syncytial virus obviously.

Immobilized cells with endocellular enzymes improved by the permealizing and crosslinking treatment.

In order to achieve high activity of enzymatic catalysis, the method of permealizing and crosslinking treatment has been suggested for immobilizing cells with endocellular enzymes. Polyethene-polyamine and glutardehyde were used to enhance the activity and stability of E. coli having aspartase entrapped in k-carrageenan gel and intact P. dacunhae cells having aspartate-beta-decarbonoxylase. The strength and enlargement effects, which favor the performance of catalysis in a packed bed reactor and a membrane reactor, respectively, were also obtained from the experiment results.

Immunoreactive growth hormone in human peripheral T lymphocytes: encoding sequence of cDNA identical to that of the pituitary human growth hormone.

OBJECTIVE: To detect the cDNA sequence of immunoreactive growth hormone (irGH) in human lymphocytes and to compare it with that of human growth hormone (hGH) in the pituitary. METHODS: The mRNA of irGH in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) was detected by Northern blot analysis. The cDNA of irGH was obtained by reverse-transcriptase and polymerase chain reaction amplification and obtained by screening from a cDNA library of human T lymphocytes. The sequence of irGH cDNA was determined and compared with that of the pituitary hGH. RESULTS: Very low level of irGH mRNA was detected in human PBMCs by Northern blot analysis. The cDNA sequence of the entire open reading frame of human irGH was 651 bp, which is identical to that of pituitary hGH. CONCLUSIONS: The same hGH molecule can be produced by human pituitary somatotrophic cells and human peripheral lymphocytes.

Familial occurrence of hemangioblastoma of central nervous system.

OBJECTIVE: To study the familial occurrence of hemangioblastoma of the central nervous system and to search for an effective way to diagnose and manage the disease. METHODS: From 1974 to 1993, six patients with hemangioblastoma with family history underwent surgical treatment at our hospital. Computerized tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique was used for the diagnoses before operation. RESULTS: Each patient had more than two relatives with hemangioblastoma. Multiple lesions were found in two of the six familial hemangioblastoma cases. All the patients recovered well after operation. So far, no victims have been discovered in the third generation. CONCLUSIONS: The high occurrence rate of familial hemangioblastoma cases suggests an involvement of hereditary factors. We need a long follow-up study on the descendants of familial hemangioblastoma patients. MRI is of diagnostic value in determining the location and nature of hemangioblastoma in both brain and spinal cord. A thorough examination is necessary for hemangioblastoma patients, and microsurgery is important in removing the tumor.
