Three cases of malakoplakia of prostate.

Three cases that were confirmed as malakoplakia of the prostate by means of prostatic biopsy are reported here. All of the patients had a previous history of urinary tract infection with Escherichia coli. These are cases that had not been found in the literature in Japan, and they are deemed the eighth, ninth, and tenth cases of prostatic malakoplakia reported in the world literature.

Anomalous flexor pollicis longus muscle.

This paper presents a case in which an anomalous tendon from the flexor pollicis longus to the flexor indicis profundus caused limitation of independent flexion of the thumb. The anomaly was accompanied by chronic tenosynovitis.

Diffuse alveolar septal amyloidosis in generalised amyloidosis.

A case of generalized amyloidosis is reported which diffusely involved the alveolar septa. A 67-year-old Japanese housewife showed no clinical evidence of systemic disease. She had complained of anorexia and diarrhea for a year and finally died of pneumonia-like symptom. Autopsy revealed a generalized amyloidosis, in which amyloid materials deposited beneath the basement membrane prominently in alveolar septa, and slightly in glands of alimental tract, thyroid and kidneys, perireticularly in the myocardium and adipose tissues, focally in the interstitial spaces of urogenital tract, thyroid, eosphagus and pancreas, and within the walls of small blood vessels in many organs No amyloid tumor was detected in the respiratory system. Severe alveolar septal amyloidosis occurred diffusely in both lungs in this case. The arrangement of amyloid deposition in the lungs was discussed in relation to gas diffusion in the alveolar walls.

Papillary necrosis and the antinuclear factor.

The cold-reacting antinuclear factor, specific to kidney tissues, was detected transiently in serum specimens from a diabetic patient during an episode of papillary necrosis. Determination of the cold-reacting antinuclear factor is suggested as being useful in evaluating the degree destruction in kidney tissues.

Effect of an altered rest-activity or feeding schedule on the shift of motor activity rhythm of mice.

Preflight acclimatization to the rhythm of destination and postflight daytime activity are assumed to be effective countermeasures against the jet lag syndrome. Regarding this idea, resynchronization of motor activity rhythm was investigated in mice subjected to daytime exercises on a driven belt before or after the reversal of lighting regimen. In addition, the effect of prior daytime feeding was studied. No evidence was manifested that the forced exercises or feeding schedule would hasten synchronization. This result indicates that the central control system of motor activity rhythm could not be manipulated favorably by such method in mice. On the basis of the result obtained, the applicability of countermeasures to human beings was discussed.

Modified open renal biopsy.

One hundred seven cases of open renal biopsy using KAWAMURA-modified forceps have been performed over the past two years under general anesthesia. A sufficient amount of renal tissues for routine histology, immunofluorescence staining and electronmicroscopy were obtained in all 107 cases. There were no complications attributable to the procedure. It is concluded that this procedure using the "KAWAMURA-modified forceps" can be performed easier and faster than the previous techniques of open renal biopsy.

Factor VIII procoagulant activity, factor VIII related antigen and von Willebrand factor in newborn cord blood.

The mean level of factor VIII procoagulant acitivity (VIII:C) and factor VIII related antigen (VIIIR:AG) was normal in 100 newborn cord plasmas, whereas that of von Willebrand factor (VIIIR:WF) activity was slightly lower than normal. On crossed immunoelectrophoresis, 20 of 50 newborn infants had an increased anodal mobility of VIIIR:AG. When the cord plasma showing an abnormal electrophoretic pattern was mixed with normal plasma, two precipitation peaks with a broad base were found. Similar mixing experiments with the abnormal cord plasma and plasma from a patient with atypical von Willebrand's disease did not normalize the electrophoretic mobility of VIIIR:AG. Gel filtration of the cord plasma with an abnormal electrophoretic pattern of VIII:AG, showed that the three activities were all detected at the position corresponding to a molecular weight of about 800 000. The results suggest the presence of qualitative abnormalities of the factor VIII molecule in half of full-term newborn cord plasma.

[Formation of indium-111 in alpha and helium-3 bombardment of natural cadmium (author's transl)].

Formation cross sections and thick-target yields were studied in detail for alpha reactions and helium-3 reactions of natural cadmium in the energy range 10-40 MeV in order to determine the optimum condition for the production of medical use 11In. The helium-3 reactions were found to give higher 111In yield; namely, at the optimum helium-3 particle energy of 40 MeV and with the cadmium foil of 280 mg/cm2 thickness the amount of 11In produced was 270 muCi/muA . h. A cooling-time of 54 hours was required for the best radiochemical purity. The extraction of HBr-isopropyl ether followed by the anion exchange method was found to be the best chemical method for the carrier-free indium-111 separation.
