Barium enema examination using a remote controlled positive and negative contrast media inflator.

In a series of 30 patients, barium enema examination of the colon was performed via a remote controlled air and contrast media inflator. With this apparatus, introduction and elimination of air and barium into the colon can be accomplished at a freely adjustable rate of injection by remote control. Fluoroscopy time is significantly reduced and the operator is not exposed to radiation.

Changes in some marker enzyme activities of liver plasma membranes during regeneration after partial hepatectomy in rats.

Liver plasma membranes were isolated from regenerating rat livers between 20 h and 10 days after partial hepatectomy in order to study the effect of partial hepatectomy on some membrane enzyme activities. Mg2+-ATPase (EC 3.6.1.4) activity, but not (Na+ + K+)-ATPase activity, decreased slightly at 2 days, whereas leucyl beta-naphthylamidase (EC3.4.1.1) and 5'-nucleotidase (EC3.1.3.5) activities increased considerably at 1-2 and 3-5 days, respectively. These changes were not parallel to a sharp increase in mitotic activity of liver cells which occurred at 36 h.

The effect of denervation on the synchronization of contraction of the rat vas deferens.

Denervation of the rat vas deferens results in both quantitative and qualtitative changes in the contraction of the isolated smooth muscle. The maximum contraction induced by norepinephrine, acetylcholine or serotonin is enhanced by denervation. The response of the tissue to 2 X 10(-4) M BaCl2 initiates a contraction which is more synchronized than the response of the control tissue. By use of 14C-sorbitol and Co-EDTA for estimating extracellular space and from fluorescence histochemical observations, it appears that facilitation of drug diffusion through the extracellular space plays an unimportant role in the altered response to drugs. In experiments which utilized a double-compartment tissue bath it was found that denervation enhanced the propagation of the contraction in the longitudinal direction. From measurements of the longitudinal tissue impedance it was determined that the resistance between smooth muscle cells was significantly decreased by denervation. These results suggest that denervation improves the propagation of excitation in this smooth muscle.

Methylguanidine content in food.

A combination of column chromatography using microcrystalline cellulose and ion-exchange resin, paper chromatography, gas chromatography, and gas chromatogrraphy-mass spectometry was used to determine the content of methylguanidine in various meats of fish and animals, and their processed products. All the samples of fresh fish meat and beef analyzed contained trace amounts (0.2 approximately 0.9 ppm) of methylguanidine. Various types of dried or canned fish also contained trace amounts, while most of the "Bushi-rui," a highly processed dried meat of bonito, mackerel, or sardine contained 21 to 106 ppm of the compound. Two brands of peptone made by digesting meat probably with pepsin and trypsin also contained 12 and 70 ppm of methylguanidine, respectively. Samples of ham, sausage, salami sausage, powdered skim-milk, and a few others did not contain any detectable amount (less than 0.2 ppm).

Effects of antidepressant drugs on amygdaloid after-discharge in rats.

Effects of antidepressant drugs on the amygdaloid after-discharge induced by stimulating the amygdala in rats implanted with chronic electrodes, were investigated in correlation with anti-muricidal effects as well as neurotoxicity. Tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline, imipramine and nortriptyline markedly depressed both after-discharge and muricide at doses smaller than neurotoxic doses. The effect of PF-257 was also the same as tricyclic antidepressants. On the other hand, methamphetamine and pipradrol blocked the muricide at doses smaller than neurotoxic doses without depressing the amygdaloid after-discharge. Major tranquilizers, chlorpromazine and clozapine depressed both after-discharge and muricide only at doses larger than those which impaired rotarod performance. Haloperidol, on the contrary, depressed the after-discharge without selectively blocking the muricide. Minor tranquilizers, diazepam and chlordiazepoxide did not block the muricide at doses smaller than neurotoxic doses, although they showed a marked depression of the after-discharge.
