The embedding of ossicular chain specimens in plastic.

The following objects were specifically designed for teaching material to the medical students. Dried human auditory ossicles were bleached in 30% hydrogen peroxide solution and then, embedded in a good quality plastic. The plastic mass was shaped into a ball 5 cm in diameter, and the surface of which was polished with a good finish. The merits of the objects may be listed as follows; 1) A permenant preservation of the objects is possible because they are embedded in heat- and chemical-resistant material. 2) The objects are handy for use in the lecture room and easily observed by the students because of the magnifying effect of the plastic covering.

Effects of antiepileptics on both behavioral and electrographic seizure patterns induced by maximal electroshock in rats.

Effects of antiepileptics on both behavioral (TE) and electrographic seizure patterns induced by maximal electroshock were studied simultaneously in the same animal. The results obtained are as follows. All the antiepileptics used in this study depressed the TE seizure. Imipramine, biperiden, and lidocaine also depressed TE seizure, although they are not classified as antiepileptics. Phenobarbital, primidone, trimethadione, carbamazepine, ethosuximide, diazepam, clozapine, and imipramine had a depressant effect on electrographic seizures. However, phenytoin, ethotoin, phenacemide, and acetazolamide did not influence the electrographic seizure, in spite of having a strong effect on TE seizure. The present procedure, i.e., that of simultaneous observation of both behavioral and electrographic seizure patterns induced by maximal electroshock in the same animal, provides information which cannot be obtained from either behavior or EEG observation alone.

Studies on the function of cell membrane. 11th Report: Binding of cytochrome b5 to liver microsomes and plasma membranes isolated from normal and CCl4-treated rats.

Cytochrome b5 was isolated from liver microsomes using a detergent-method. The hemoprotein was found to bind to liver plasma membranes in vitro and was accompanied by an increase in NADH-cytochrome c reductase activity, but not NADH-ferricyanide reductase activity. As in the case of microsomes, the binding to plasma membranes was temperature-dependent and was tight to the extent that the bound cytochrome b5 was little released under high ionic strength. The capacity of plasma membranes for the binding was less than that of microsomes. Administration of CCl4 did not significantly affect the binding of the hemoprotein in both fractions. These results add support to our previous proposal that the elevation of NADH-cytochrome c reductase activity of liver plasma membranes observed early after administration of CCl4 may be caused by the binding of cytochrome b5 which has probably migrated from the endoplasmic reticulum.

Early endoscopic features of stomach cancer and its mode of growth.

To establish the earliest sign of stomach cancer in endoscopy and to reveal the subsequent morphologic changes of the lesion, we studied retrospectively 41 cases of stomach cancer. The eariest sign consisted of redness, small polypoid lesions, flat mucosa with slight unevenness and small depressed lesions. There was no clear correlation between the observation period and the size of cancer lesion in cases of early stomach cancer. In cases of advanced cancer, however, the observation period correlated with the size of cancer lesion to a certain extent, and the correlation between the area of cancer (Y cm2) and the observation period (X months) gave a linear equation of Y = 0.68X-3.13.

Histological development of stapes footplate in human embryos.

Normal development of the human stapes footplate was investigated in serial sections by light microscopy. Materials were obtained from 35 Japanese embryos from the 6th to 32nd week of embryonal age. Eighteen embryos up to 16 weeks of age (3.5mm to 105mm in crown-rump length) were examined, focusing particularly on the lamina stapedialis of the otic capsule. The present study showed that primordial formation of the lamina stapedialis appeared in 16mm embryo and that the lamina was completely formed and fused to the base of the annular stapes in a 35mm embryo. In a 50mm embryo, the adult form of stapes was found with a rim and annular ligament. The results, therefore, seemed to essentially agree with the theory of dual origin and development of the footplate proposed by Cauldwell and Anson, and teratogenic agents might affect any stage of the process producing anomalies, including congenital footplate fixation, congenital absence of the oval window and calcification of the annular ligament.
