Precocious puberty due to postmeningitic hydrocephalus.

A case of precocious puberty due to postmeningitic hydrocephalus was presented. Concentrations of serum gonadotropins and estradiol were found to be elevated, and the response of LH to LHRH was also high, similar to that in the late pubertal stage. CT scanning demonstrated marked dilatation of the third ventricle. It was considered that this was one of the factors which caused the precocious puberty.

Effect of prostaglandins on mucosal blood flow and aspirin-induced damage in the canine stomach.

This study deals with the action in anesthetized dogs of prostaglandin E2 and F2 alpha given into the celiac artery and the femoral vein on gastric mucosal blood flow and on gastric mucosal damage induced by aspirin. In the non-stimulated stomach, infusion of prostaglandin E2 or F2 alpha into the celiac artery resulted in a marked increase in mucosal blood flow and a sustained decrease, respectively. In contrast, an infusion of prostaglandin E2 into the femoral vein produced a decrease in mucosal blood flow, whereas prostaglandin F2 alpha produced a biphasic response: a transient increase followed by a decrease. It was observed that intravenously infused prostaglandin E2, while reducing mucosal blood flow, significantly diminished mucosal lesions, altered transmucosal potential differences and H+ back-diffusion induced by a topical application of aspirin. The findings indicate that the action of prostaglandins on gastric mucosal blood flow alters depending on the route of administration and that prostaglandins seem to exert gastric cytoprotection through mechanisms other than an increase in mucosal blood flow.

[Intracranial arachnoid cyst and porencephaly of the middle fossa--its clinical and neuroradiological study].

We reported four cases with well demarkated low density area in the middle cranial fossa, which was not enhanced with contrast medium and had the same absorption coefficient as the CSF. The operations and histological examinations revealed that two cases were arachnoid cysts and the others were porencephalic cysts. The clinicoradiological differential clues are listed below. 1) The porencephaly has intimate relation with focal neurological signs. 2) The thinning and bulging of the temporal bone are not a specific finding of an arachnoid cyst. Hemicranial atrophy, elevation of minor sphenoid wing and dilatation of paranasal sinuses in addition to focal bulging and thinning are indicative of porencephalic cyst. 3) Hemiatrophy of the brain and dilatation of the lateral ventricle on CT as well as the absorption coefficient of the brain surface facing the cyst are important finding of the porencephaly in differentiation. 4) The investigation of CSF dynamic is by no means helpful in differentiation between arachnoid cyst and porencephaly except intraarachnoid cyst. 5) The horizontal portion of the middle cerebral artery is not elevated in both two porencephalic cases. One of them showed a slight shift of anterior cerebral artery toward the affected side. An obstruction of the vessel is an important finding in porencephaly. 6) The electroencephalography can clearly demonstrate a porencephalic cyst as a localized slow focus, whereas it is not so remarkable in an arachnoid cyst.

[Basic research for visible laser unit for the spinal cord (a preliminary report)].

The cat's spinal dorsal column was irradiated unilaterally with Ar. laser of which power output was 500 mW and the spot size was 2 mm in diameter. The somatosensory evoked potentials (S.E.P.) were recorded bilaterally. In other cats, the fluorescein was injected intravenously for photoactivation and the dorsal column was irradiated with Ar. laser. The conclusion can be summarized as follows: 1) When the small demarcated area was made in the surface of the dorsal column by Ar. laser-irradiation, the early component of S.E.P. was disappeared. The histological finding revealed the destruction of the irradiated dorsal column. 2) The photoactivation effect of Ar. laser was demonstrated in the spinal cord, by using a fluorescein drug. The S.E.P. and the histological finding were the same as those of the nonfluorescein drug group. 3) The S.E.P. was available for the concept of the Laser-Photo-Biological-Effect (L.P.B.E.).

2,3,5-Trimethyl-6-(12-hydroxy-5,10-dodecadiynyl)-1,4-benzoquinone (AA861), a selective inhibitor of the 5-lipoxygenase reaction and the biosynthesis of slow-reacting substance of anaphylaxis.

2,3,5-Trimethyl-6-(12-hydroxy-5,10-dodecadiynyl)-1,4-benzoquinone (AA861) inhibited 5-lipoxygenase of guinea pig peritoneal polymorphonuclear leukocytes (ID50, 0.8 microM). The inhibition was of competitive type. 12-Lipoxygenases and fatty acid cyclooxygenase were not affected below 10 microM. The formation of slow-reacting substance of anaphylaxis by the sensitized guinea pig lung was almost fully suppressed by the compound at 10 microM.
