Postoperative long term cancer chemotherapy (PLCC) with the combination of Mitomycin-C, FT-207, a furanyl analog of 5-fluorouracil, and PSK, an immunopotentiator, was prescribed for patients with advanced gastric cancer. Five year survival rates for all stage III and stage IV patients were 52.8 and 19.3 per cent in the PLCC group. The rates were 26.7 and 2.2 per cent in the control groups (p less than 0.05). In curative cases of stage IV, the 5-year survival rate was 50.0% in the PLCC group while the rate was 11.1% in the controls. Mean survival time of patients with peritoneal dissemination or hepatic metastases was 12.8 and 10.9 months, respectively, for the PLCC group, in contrast to the lower 6.4 and 4.3 months for the controls. Thus, the 5-year survival rate of advanced gastric cancer patients in stage III and stage IV was markedly improved when these patients were treated with the protocol. Our findings clearly show that adjuvant chemotherapy should be administered for a long period postoperatively in order to achieve a significant improvement in patients with gastric cancer.
Four spontaneous AKR leukemias (T67, T68, T70, and T74) with a modal chromosome number of 40 were transplanted serially to syngeneic mice in order to assess the significance of trisomy 15 and other karyotypic changes in the development of leukemia. In T67 and T70, the chromosomally normal cell disappeared completely or decreased considerably in frequency at the first passage in vivo. The karyotype of the modal cells changed continuously in T67 during transplantation, conserving trisomy 17, while the pseudodiploid cells with trisomy 15 and monosomy X were stable from the first to the seventh transplant generations of T70. In contrast to these results, the primary cell population of T68 and T74 with modal cells having a normal karyotype remained essentially unchanged throughout 7 or 15 transplant generations, despite the occurrence of aneuploidy, which included trisomy 15 or trisomy 17 in low frequencies. It is thus evident that the diploid cell is compatible with being leukemic and that neither trisomy 15 nor trisomy 17 is necessary for the initiation and progression of AKR leukemia, although the former was detected in three of four primary leukemias used for this experiment and in all four during transplantation.

Using an immunoperoxidase antibody test, the serum immunoglobulin (Ig) A antibody titer was determined in swine naturally infected with transmissible gastroenteritis (TGE; group A), swine inoculated orally with high-virulent TGE virus (group B), and swine inoculated IM (group C) or orally (group D) with low-virulent TGE virus. Studies were then made on the relationship between active immunity to TGE and the serum IgA antibody titer. In group A swine, serum IgA antibody and virus-neutralizing (VN) antibody were absent in the serum collected in the acute stage, but were detected from the serum collected in the convalescent stage. In group B swine, serum IgA antibody and VN antibody began to be detected on postinoculation day (PID) 7 and were still detectable on PID 100. In group C and D swine, VN antibody was detected, but serum IgA antibody was not. Swine were inoculated orally with high-virulent TGE virus and were challenge exposed orally with the same strain of virus on PID 18, 21, 80, and 120 (group E). None of group E swine manifested clinical signs of infection. Their serum IgA antibody titers ranged from 2 to 512 at the time of inoculation. Swine were inoculated IM with low-virulent TGE virus and intranasally with the same virus on PID 60 (group F). They were challenge exposed with the high-virulent strain of TGE virus on PID 140, 200, and 260 (80, 140, and 200 days after the 2nd inoculation). At the time of challenge exposure, IgA antibody was undetected in serum at a 1:2 dilution. All group F swine had severe diarrhea 3 to 4 days after inoculation. Many of them vomited at the same time. In these swine, villous atrophy was observed in the jejunal portion of the small intestine. The VN antibody titer of porcine serum obtained at the time of challenge exposure was higher than was that determined in the group E swine. Seemingly, serum IgA antibody titer determined by the immunoperoxidase antibody test may be an indicator of active immunity to TGE.
The antifibrinolytic action of tranexamic acid (AMCHA) on the growth and metastasis of rabbit V2 carcinoma having high fibrinolytic activity was studied. Upon oral administration of AMCHA, the growth of the tumor and metastasis to the lung tended to be inhibited, and the number of metastatic foci in the regional lymph nodes significantly decreased in the early period of tumor growth. Enhancement of fibrin deposition in the tumor and inhibition of fibrinolytic activity of the tumor were recognized in the AMCHA-treated group. The inhibitory effect of tranexamic acid on fibrin dissolution might interfere with local tumor growth and the release of tumor cells into the vessels.

The cause of death in 26 of 220 cases of early gastric carcinoma was studied, particularly in relation to the mode of recurrence. Of the 26, 7 patients died of disease related causes and gross appearance revealed that 4 cases were IIa predominant, 2 were IIc (or +I), and 1 was IIc predominant. Histologic examination indicated that all 7 cases were differentiated-type adenocarcinomas. Two of 7 recurring carcinomas were due to residual carcinoma in the resected stumps and 5 patients had hematogenous metastases, particularly in the liver. Eighteen of the 26 patients died of other causes, in 1 case of unknown causes, and it is interesting that in 5 of the 18 cases, simultaneous or nonsimultaneous double carcinomas at sites other than the stomach were noted. In order to prevent recurrence in early gastric carcinoma, it is important that no carcinoma be left in the resected stump or remnant, and that the prophylaxis be achieved through the administration of adequate amounts of anticancer chemotherapy, in order to prevent hematogenous metastasis, particularly to the liver.
