The structures of antibiotics SF2315A and B were determined to be [4aR-(4a beta,12b beta)] or [4aS-(4a alpha,12b alpha)]-4a,5,6,12b-tetrahydro-4a,8-dihydroxy-3- methylbenz[a]anthracen-1,7,12(4H)-trione and [1S-(1 beta,4a beta,6a beta,12 beta,12a beta,12b beta)] or [1 R-(1 alpha,4a alpha,6a alpha,12 alpha,12a alpha,12b alpha)]- 1,4,4a,5,6,6a,12a,12b-octahydro-1,4a,8,12-tetrahydroxy-3-methyl-6a ,12a- epoxybenz[a]anthracen-7(12H)-one, respectively from their spectroscopic analyses and single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses.
A case of a 13-year-old boy with a primary, intrasellar malignant germ cell tumor is reported. An immunohistochemical study revealed that the serum HCG and AFP levels were highly elevated and that the tumor contained elements of seminoma, choriocarcinoma, a yolk sac tumor, and an embryonal carcinoma. After operation, combined chemotherapy (cisplatin, vinblastine and bleomycin, i.e. PVB therapy) and irradiation were performed in hope of achieving the radiosensitizing effect of cisplatin. As a result, partial remission was obtained. Although PVB therapy is considered effective, combined radio-chemotherapy, as was done in this case, is thought to be better method for treating an intracranial, malignant germ cell tumor.

In the present paper, a method is described for the determination of nitroarene, (nitrated polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons) in pollutants. Organic compounds in diesel engine soot samples were extracted with 10 ml ethanol and 40 ml benzene for 10 minutes by using a ultrasonic apparatus. The aromatic nitro compounds extracted were redissolved in methanol and converted to aromatic amines by using hydrochloric acid and zinc powder for 15 minutes. The reduced aromatic amines were extracted with benzene, and the extract was completely evaporated under nitrogen gas and then the residue was redissolved in cyclohexane. The reduced fraction in cyclohexane was chromatographed on a silica gel column and divided into two portions. The aromatic amino compounds were contained in the second fraction, which was eluted with benzene and was completely evaporated under nitrogen gas. On the other hand, the residue was redissolved in acetonitrile. The aromatic amino compounds in acetonitrile were separated and determined by means of high performance liquid chromatograph equipped with a UV and fluorescence detectors. In diesel engine soot samples, 1-nitropyrene, 9-nitroanthracene, and 1-nitrofluorene were detected. 1-nitropyrene could be determined and its content was 59-1020 ng/g. By this method, 1-nitropyrene in pollutants could be analyzed easily.
Combined therapy consisting of sclerotherapy, embolization and splenopneumopexy was established for the treatment of oesophageal varices. These procedures were safely performed in 16 patients. No serious complications and no recurrent bleeding have been observed. The varices disappeared or were significantly improved as determined by periodic endoscopic evaluations. Portopulmonary shunt by splenopneumopexy is an alternative technique in the eradication of varices following sclerotherapy.

A new approach consisting of sclerotherapy, embolization, and splenopneumopexy was designed to treat esophageal varices, which were caused by cirrhosis of the liver in 13 patients and by idiopathic portal hypertension in three. No serious complications occurred. Fifteen of the patients were well and without recurrent bleeding or encephalopathy during the 29-month follow-up period. One patient died of hepatic failure 4 months postoperatively. The varices either disappeared or were significantly improved. Placement of a portopulmonary shunt by splenopneumopexy is a safe, simple, and effective procedure for the resolution of varices that recur following sclerotherapy.

The serum testosterone level (STL) was determined in 84 male and 32 female patients with gastric carcinoma and in 58 male and 20 female patients with benign diseases as a control group. The STL of the male patients with carcinoma was lower (446 +/- 149 ng/dl) than that of the male control group (532 +/- 132 ng/dl) (P less than 0.001). Even 17 male patients of the early carcinoma showed lower STL (440 +/- 117 ng/dl) than the normal group (P less than 0.001). In the female patients, it was also lower (31.6 +/- 16.0 ng/dl) than in the control group (46.3 +/- 15.3 ng/dl) (P less than 0.005). The postoperative STL of the cases surviving the gastrectomy was higher than the preoperative data in 32 male patients (P less than 0.005) as well as in 12 female patients (0.025 greater than P greater than 0.01), whereas it obviously decreased in the patients who died of recurrence. Therefore, it appears that gastric carcinoma decreases the STL by some mechanism.
