Stage IVS neuroblastoma.

This is a review of the findings in 10 cases of stage IVS neuroblastoma, that have been observed in the First Surgical Department of Hokkaido University Hospital. The patients under the age of 1 yr in stage IVS neuroblastoma have a favorable prognosis; the survival rate was 70%. The regressions were histologically confirmed as maturation of the neuroblastoma cells to ganglioma cells. The lymphocyte counts and T-cell function were well maintained in the surviving patients but both were markedly reduced in the patients who later died. The treatment should be conservative so that immune mechanisms are not inhibited and should be withheld until respiratory failure or progressive signs toward stage IV are identified.

Interference of an anesthetic preparation with plasma triglyceride determinations.

A marked elevation in plasma triglycerides is observed when experimental animals are anesthetized with a pentobarbital sodium injection (Nembutal), a most widely used anesthetic in animal experiments. This is proven, however, to be a false rise due to the interference of propylene glycol present in the solvent of the injection with the plasma triglyceride determinations. One mole of propylene glycol produces one mole of formaldehyde by oxidation. The formaldehyde thus generated from propylene glycol mixes with those from glycerol moiety of plasma triglycerides, and gives an enhanced color reaction to all chromogenic reactions with formaldehyde. Since most of the chemical methods for plasma triglyceride determination is based on either one of these color reactions, we have to pay attention to a hypertriglyceridemia due to such influence as exerted by a solvent additive of propylene glycol upon the triglyceride measurements.

[Yolk sac tumor (author's transl)].

An analysis was made from a histopathological and clinical standpoint of 6 cases of yolk sac tumor over a period of 15 years, treated in the first surgical department of the University of Hokkaido. All these cases, with the exception of one retroperitoneal tumor, were diagnosed as embryonic carcinomas before the study. AFP were examined throughout the duration of treatment and their levels reflected changes corresponding to the effects of treatment and recurrence. They were seen in the form of special fluorescence in the tumor cells using the antibody immunofluorescence method. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy may be effective, but the prognosis of these tumors is poor. Amongst the cases mentioned, only the child with a tumor of testicular origin is in good health.

Dormancy and Impotency of Cocklebur Seeds: VII. Inability of Dormant Cotyledons to Form Chlorophyll.

Dormant seeds of cocklebur (Xanthium pennsylvanicum Wallr.) were characterized by the lack of ability to form chlorophyll. Such an inability of cotyledons of the dormant seeds was improved by the application of various factors and reagents which were capable of breaking the dormancy and of increasing cotyledon enlargement. Of these, ethylene, benzyladenine, and high temperature treatments were particularly effective, and, in turn, oxygen enrichment, gibberellic acid, thiourea, carbon doxide, and potassium nitrate were also promotive to the greening of the dormant cotyledons. The effects of benzyladenine, oxygen enrichment, and high temperature were reduced in the presence of absorbents for endogenously evolve carbon dioxide and ethylene. delta-Aminolevulinic acid could not restore their greening ability.

Recording of the fourth heart sound by the signal averaging method. Preliminary report.

The fourth heart sound was clearly recorded by using the signal averaging method. Furthermore, the simultaneous recording of the Doppler signal with the fourth heart sound was performed. Thus, it was demonstrated that the Doppler signal started after the P wave and followed by the fourth heart sound. In 2 cases, the effect of the double Master's test and taking a bath was studied on the computer averaged phonocardiogram. After the exercise, the amplitude of the fourth heart sound was increased, whereas after taking a bath it was almost unchanged. The above results show that the simultaneous recordings of a computer averaged phonocardiogram and Doppler signal that is associated with cardiac activity can greatly facilitate the interpretation of small vibrations such as the fourth heart sound.

Cholesteryl ester-rich inclusions from human aortic fatty streak and fibrous plaque lesions of atherosclerosis. I. Crystalline properties, size and internal structure.

Cholesteryl esters, the major lipid in the lesions of human atherosclerosis, occurred in fatty streaks and fibrous plaques from 42 adults as spherical inclusions whose diameters averaged 1.99 +/- 0.48 and 2.16 +/- 0.62 mu, respectively, and which with polarizing light microscopy resolved into a mixture of various proportions of anisotropic and isotropic forms. Anisotropic forms had diameters of 1.9 +/- 0.4 mu, uniaxial-like symmetry with a formée cross image, a whitish gray interference color under cross polarizer and analyzer, second order blue and first order yellow interference colors with a tint plate, a birefringence of 0.0412 +/- 0.0054 and a refractive index of 1.559 +/- 0.0014. Their probable structural organization is primarily a lyotropic smectic mesophase (liquid crystal) of cholesteryl esters secondarily organized into multiple concentric lamellae. Isotropic forms had diameters of 2.3 +/- 0.6 mu and were optically inactive irrespective of their orientation. At 23 C, fatty streak inclusions from 21 subjects averaged significantly higher in the proportion of anisotropic forms, 85.5 +/- 9.3%, than did fibrous plaque inclusions from 21 subjects, which had 32.4 +/- 16.3% anisotropic forms (P < 0.01).
