A child with rheumatic carditis developed acute renal failure due to renal papillary necrosis while receiving a short course of aspirin treatment. It is suggested that in this child the aspirin therapy predisposed the renal medulla to hypoxic damage induced by the carditis and congestive heart failure. It is therefore recommended that children receiving aspirin or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, even for a short time, be closely observed and the drug discontinued of hypoxia is evident. Moreover, during illnesses tending to cause hypoxia such as carditis, aspirin or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are best avoided since they are additional risk factors for renal damage.

A low birth weight premature neonate with systemic candidiasis developed complete renal obstruction by fungus balls, diagnosed by ultrasonography. The neonate was treated with temporary urinary diversion, amphotericin B, 5-fluorocytosine and survived. This case emphasizes the need for a high index of suspicion of renal obstruction by fungus balls in neonates with systemic candidiasis when renal function deteriorates. In such cases early urinary diversion can be life-saving.
A seven-year-old child developed ascites when recovering from hepatitis A infection. Accumulation of intraperitoneal fluid was confirmed by ultrasonic study. The clinical course was otherwise uneventful and the ascites disappeared after a few days with no treatment, and did not recur for five years. Ascites may exceptionally accompany hepatitis A infection. Its appearance, however, does not indicate an unfavorable outcome.
Two cases of transient protein-losing gastropathy (PLG) or Menetrier's disease in childhood are described. Both cases presented with an abrupt onset of edema due to hypoalbuminemia and were diagnosed by an upper gastrointestinal series. One of the cases was further diagnosed and followed by ultrasound. We believe that this is the first description of the ultrasonic picture of transient PLG in children. In both cases complete recovery was evident after a few weeks.
A case of thyroglossal duct anomaly showing an unusual finding of foci of cartilage is presented. Although the concept of choristoma may explain the pathogenesis of cartilage within the present congenital anomaly, the histologic features were more in favor of a metaplastic process. In addition, the history of recurrent bouts of local inflammation supports the latter view.
Two children, aged 6 and 8 years, were admitted to the hospital because of fever, pain, and tenderness over the muscular masses of the thigh and calf, respectively. The presumptive diagnosis of pyomyositis was confirmed by ultrasound studies. Antibiotic treatment was administered in both cases while one child also required surgical drainage of the muscular suppuration. Complete recovery was achieved in both cases. Performance of ultrasound studies is indicated whenever pyomyositis is suspected.

A neonate with congenital disseminated neurofibromatosis involving skin, subcutaneous tissues retropharyngeal, retroperitoneal and urinary bladder is presented. The massive presentation precluded radical surgical approach. This seems to be the first report of congenital widely disseminated neonatal neurofibromatosis in the English literature.
An antenatal detection of unilateral torsion of uterine adnexa was made by means of ultrasonography on the 32nd gestational week. This presented as an asymptomatic large "pseudo-cystic" mass, and was resected electively at the age of two weeks. A "fluid-fluid" level on ultrasonography is highly suggestive of this rare entity. This is the fourth case in the English literature to have been detected antenatally, and among the first dozen to be reported in the neonatal period.
