The developmental changes of the extracerebral space seen on ultrasonography in neonates and infants.

Ultrasonographic examination was performed in 70 healthy neonates and infants using a real-time sector scanner array machine with a 7.5-MHz transducer and a 4 cm waterbag. The skin, subcutaneous tissue, dura mater, interhemispheric fissure, gyri, sulci and sagittal sinus could be clearly visualized on ultrasonography (US), and the distance from the dura mater to the brain surface was determined. The extracerebral space under the anterior fontanel increased until 3 months after birth, and decreased gradually from 3 months to 12 months. The width and structure of the extracerebral space seen on US can be useful as parameters for assessing the process of brain growth and for detecting extra- and intracerebral pathologies in neonates and infants.

Hypoxic-ischemic brain damage and cerebral blood flow changes in young rabbits.

Hypoxic-ischemic cerebral damage was demonstrated in the cerebral cortex of 2-week-old rabbits at 3 to 5 days after bilateral carotid artery ligation and reperfusion during hypoxemia. Carotid ligation and reperfusion had little effect on cortical blood flow during normoxemia, but the former suppressed a blood flow increase to hypoxemia and the latter suppressed a blood flow decrease to hyperoxemia. These results suggest a relative ischemia or vascular dysfunction which may play a part in the pathogenesis of the hypoxic-ischemic cortical necrosis.

Pathogenesis of periventricular white matter hemorrhages in preterm infants.

Periventricular white matter hemorrhage (PWMH) was frequently found in very low-birth weight infants with perinatal asphyxia or respiratory distress. Primary PWMH with or without intraventricular rupture was found at the deep arterial borderzones of the frontal or occipital lobes. The ischemic tissue damage induced by hypoperfusion may be a predisposing factor for PWMH. However, the high incidence of visceral intravascular thrombi and the fan-shaped appearance of hemorrhage suggested venous hemorrhagic infarction. Venous thrombosis with coagulopathy may be an important factor for the pathogenesis of PWMH.

Nonlinear response in evaluating the subjective diffuseness of sound fields.

Tests were conducted to determine which horizontal reflection angles are most effective in stimulating subjective diffuseness for a listener in a room. Paired comparison tests were carried out where subjects were asked to judge in which of two sound fields they perceived more diffuseness. Results show that the most effective horizontal angle depends on the frequency of the one-third-octave-band noise, as is indicated by the interaural cross correlation. The remarkable finding in this investigation is that the scale value of subjective diffuseness may be formulated in terms of the 3/2 power of the magnitude of interaural cross correlation (IACC) and that the scale value does not vary with the frequency of the bandpass noise source.

Prevention of HTLV-I transmission through the breast milk by a freeze-thawing process.

Fifteen human breast milk samples obtained from mothers seropositive for human T-cell lymphotropic virus type-I (HTLV-I) antigen were kept frozen overnight at -20 degrees. Each milk sample was then co-cultivated with cord lymphocytes obtained from 15 anti-HTLV-I antibody-negative mothers. No HTLV-I antigen-positive cells were detected among the cord lymphocytes subjected to co-cultivation. These results suggest that thawing of frozen breast milk may prevent HTLV-I transmission from mother to child via breast milk.

[The cancer family syndrome--a case report].

A family diagnosed as cancer family syndrome because endometrial cancer was found in a member of this colorectal cancer-prone family was reported. The fact that uterine (endometrial) cancer was found in a family member during the serial follow-up of this family shows that there is no more than a difference of time between familial colorectal cancer and cancer family syndrome. The clinical significance of the familial cancer aggregation would be an important clue in the early detection of another new cancer in the family.

[A study on the penetration of cefmenoxime into bile and gallbladder tissues and the pathological changes of inflamed tissues].

The penetration of cefmenoxime (CMX) into bile and gallbladder tissues was studied. A dose of 2 g CMX was given intravenously to each of patients with gallstones. Concentrations of CMX in the gallbladder tissues were 120.6 +/- 39.8 micrograms/g in normal tissues about 2 hours after the administration and 128.3 +/- 52.3 micrograms/g in inflamed tissues. The penetration of CMX into gallbladder tissue tended to decrease in proportion to the severity of inflammation, but the difference between the 2 groups, normal and inflamed tissues, were not statistically significant. The penetration of CMX into gallbladder tissue was presumed to increase in proportion to increase in the serum concentration of CMX. The result indicated that the achievement of high concentrations of CMX in the serum is important in the treatment of biliary tract diseases.
