It was found, that (+)cis-3,4-dimethoxy-10,11-dimethyl-6,6aR,7,8,13, 13aS-hexahydro-[I]-benzopyrano-[4,3-b]-1,5-benzodiazepine (ZIMET 54/79) increased the life span (ILS) of C57BL/6/Jena mice suffering from transplanted B16 melanoma (ip.) by 57% (9 times ip. 250 mg/kg) and 90% (9 times ip. 500 mg/kg) respectively. In B6D2F1/Bln mice with transplanted B16 melanoma there was no ILS registered when a dose of 100-500 mg/kg was applied (ip. and p.o.). Using the Harding Passey melanoma (B6D2F1/Bln mice) only 59% tumour volume inhibition (500 mg/kg) without ILS was obtained. Finally ZIMET 54/79 tested on AMel 3 hamster melanoma (strain Z3) decreased the mean tumour volume by 72% (125 mg/kg).

Three female patients with Turner-syndrome (sexual infantilism, short stature and somatic Turner-stigmata) have been analysed cytogenetically by means of different banding techniques. A deletion of the distal heterochromatic band Yq12 of the Y chromosome was observed in a mosaic with a 45,X-cell line, i.e. the karyotype is 45,X/46,X,del(Y)(q12). In order to get information about the phenotypic expression of the 45,X/46,X,del(Yq) mosaicism all previously published cases have been reviewed. Comparing the phenotypes of all 45,X/46,X,del(Yq) mosaic cases three different phenotype categories of sexual development can be distinguished: female individuals with sexual infantilism and Turner-stigmata, individuals with ambiguous genitals, ranging from clitoris hypertrophy of female genitals to hypospadia of males, male individuals, who are infertile (azoospermic). A comparison of the appearance of external genitals with the status of gonads of all patients revealed an unequivocal relationship between the gonad status and the resulting phenotype category. Furthermore, the role of Y-chromosomal loci determining testicular differentiation (biological function of H-Y antigen) for male development has been emphasized. The effect of the 45,X-cell line on the expression of short stature and somatic Turner-stigmata is independent of sexual development. Considering the great phenotypic variability of the 45,X/46,X,del(Yq) mosaicism it seems impossible to deduce a definitive phenotype. This problem is acute in prenatal diagnosis especially.
We report on a 29-year old female patient with Turner's syndrome and sex chromosome mosaic 46,XX/45,X. The female patient shows a few somatic Turner-stigmata, short stature and fertility. The possibility of the development of endocrine active ovaries in women with Turner's syndrome and its consequences has been emphasized.
During development, the oocytes of Xenopus laevis establish junctional contact with the follicle cells enveloping them. These junctions have alternatively been described as desmosomes and as gap junctions. In this paper the morphology of these junctions has been examined in gonadotropin-stimulated and unstimulated animals at all stages of development. Contact between the oocyte and follicle cell plasma membranes is visible in stage I oocytes as thickenings in the membranes, separated by intercellular spaces of 20nm or greater. By stage III in unstimulated oocytes and stage II in gonadotropin-stimulated oocytes, intermembrane spaces at these junctional contacts are often reduced to 2 to 7 nm in width. These narrow intermembrane spaces persist through early stage IV, with greater frequency of occurrence in oocytes taken from hormonally stimulated animals. The closeness of these junctional contacts, and the permeability of the junctional spaces to intercellular tracer substances, supports the evidence that these are gap junctions.
A multicenter randomized clinical trial can offer exciting and challenging opportunities to the clinical coordinators and other health professionals who participate in the conduct of a clinical trial at the clinical units. This article will address an acute intervention trial, the Multicenter Investigation of the Limitation of Infarct Size, and demonstrate some of the important responsibilities of the clinical unit research nurse coordinators in the conduct and operation of this trial.
A large 15p + chromosome with a whole heterochromatic short arm has been studied by means of different banding techniques in six of nine individuals of a family; a possible Y/15 translocation has been excluded. Furthermore a heteromorphic pair 9 has been observed in seven family members, representing a "possible" small partial inversion 9q12;p11 or a centromeric variation. The transmission of these variant chromosomes as well as of some h + acrocentric chromosomes over three generations could be demonstrated. By means of AgI-staining large intercellular variation of Ag-NORs of the variant acrocentrics has been observed in the family members studied. The unusual accumulation of these variant chromosomes had no phenotypic effects.

Esters of levonorgestrel (13 beta-ethyl-17 alpha-ethynyl-17 beta-hydroxygon-4-en-3-one) with a variety of aliphatic and alicyclic carboxylic acids have been prepared and characterised. In tests for the suppression of estrus in rats, esters with short-chain aliphatic acids and with cyclobutane-carboxylic acid were considerably more active than the standard, norethisterone enanthate (17 alpha-ethynyl-17 beta-hydroxyestr-4-en-3-one). Such esters show great promise for development as long-acting progestogens.
The causal-locus hypothesis (CLH) asserts that persons making internal attributions for failure and external attributions for success experience more negative postoutcome moods than persons making the opposite attributions. Three experiments assessed the CLH. Although outcomes consistently affected moods and attributions, attributions did not affect moods. Significant correlations consistent with the CLH were also infrequently obtained. Another theory, the sanctioned-object hypothesis (SOH), was proposed for understanding how causal attributions lead to mood changes. This hypothesis asserts that the application of positive or negative sanctions to objects in the perceptual field is a central determinant of mood and that attributions affect mood when their content and salience activate sanctioning processes. A fourth experiment evaluated the competing theories. The results supported the SOH but not the CLH. The findings are discussed in terms of their implications for understanding mood variations and the effects that moods have on the construction of attributions and for adopting methodological alternatives that may be valuable for future laboratory research studying mood variations.
2,3-dimethyl-quinoxaline-1,4-dioxide and 2-methyl-quinoxaline-1,4-dioxide proved to be ergotropic in the feeding of a hydrocolloid ration as well as of a broiler fattening feed. They are at least equal to Nitrovin. The ergotropic effect of the hydrocolloid ration was higher than that of the conventional ration. For this reason methylated quinoxaline-1,4-dioxides are considered as belonging to the intestinal stabilisers. They increased nutrient and energy retention and decreased feed efficiency by approximately equal to 10%. Residues in the liver, the kidneys and the intestines could only be detected after 10 times the ergotropic amount.

In order to test neurobehavioral effects of low-level lead exposure during early development, Wistar-rats were given pre- and postnatal dietary lead as lead acetate in four concentrations: 0, 80, 250, and 750 ppm. These diets, known to give rise to blood lead-levels (PbB) of less than 5, 11, 18, and 31 micrograms/dl, resulted in erythrocyte ALAD-inhibition of 40, 73, and 83%, respectively. The animals were tested first at 70 to 100 days postnatal (PN 70-100) in a 2-way active avoidance-task, and then at PN 190-250 in a visual discrimination-task. Lead-exposure was associated with performance-disruption in the discrimination-task, significant (p less than 0.001) already for the 250 ppm-exposure, but with significant (p less than 0.05) performance-facilitation in the avoidance-task. If learning and retention in animals is taken as a measure of cognitive performance neurobehavioral lead-toxicity cannot easily be explained in terms of cognitive deficit. An interpretation in terms of emotional reactivity or behavioral disinhibition would seem more convincing, which covers the results from activity-studies as well. 70% ALAD-inhibition corresponds to PbBs of about 20 micrograms/dl in rats, and to about 40 micrograms/dl in children. Some implications of animal studies for neuropsychological results from Pb-exposed children are discussed.
The dominant suppressor Su(var)b101 and the dominant enhancer En(var)c101 were found to affect significantly white variegation in a strongly variegating line of the Wm4 chromosome (Wm4h) which has been used as standard rearrangement for a genetic dissection of position-effect variegation (Reuter and Wolff, 1981). Both mutations were also shown to affect position-effect heterochromatisation in T (1 ; 4)Wm258-21 and variegation in all the rearrangements tested (white, brown, scute and bobbed variegation). These results suggest that the genes identified encode functions essential for the manifestation of gene inactivation in position-effect rearrangements. It seems also reasonable to assume that in all the rearrangements tested identical heterochromatisation processes lead to inactivation of the genes whose phenotype is variegated.
