[On the function-improving effect of rebasing].

The authors studied the rebasing technique of lower full dentures. For this purpose, they used the phonetic impression method according to the integral technique of Devin. From the results obtained it is concluded that the rebasing technique may be considered a rational, highly functional method.

[Phenotypic variation in partial trisomy 4q (author's transl)].

The clinical and cytogenetic data of 3 non-related patients who have a partial trisomy 4q in common are reported. The chromosome aberration originated from a parental balanced translocation in 2 cases (t(3p+;4q--)and t(4q--;18q+)); in the 3rd case an inverted insertion of 4q22 yields q34 into 4q34 occured spontaneously. A comparison of the symptoms exhibited by these probands and 7 cases from the literature gives no indication of an uniform phaenotype of this aberration.

Biochemical and cytogenetic studies on the nucleolus organizing regions (NOR) of man. II. A family with the 15/21 translocation.

The amount of ribosomal DNA (rDNA) was determined quantitatively by RNA-DNA hybridization in the genomes of a mother and her daughter, both with the karyotype 45,XX,t(15q21q). The saturation values found were 0.030% (mother), 0.023% (daughter), and 0.022% for the husband and father of the daughter. A detailed cytogenetic analysis of the short arms of the acrocentric chromosomes of these probands allowed the biochemical results to be interpreted in terms of the size of the individual set of nucleolus organizing regions (NORs) present in each proband. The correlation existing between the biochemical and the cytogenetic findings shows that the amount of rDNA in the human genome is not primarily a function of the number of acrocentric chromosomes, but depends on the individual combination of variant NORs occurring in the human genome.

Effect of ascorbic acid on the human electroencephalogram.

Controversy exists over whether ascorbic acid (vitamin C) in doses in excess of known physiological requirements has demonstrable biological effects. The present study reports that such megadoses of vitamin C do significantly effect an objective electrophysiological measure, i.e., electroencephalogram (EEG) driving responses to photic stimulation. Four thousand milligrams of vitamin C administered 27 and 3 hours prior to assessment produced an effect on the EEGs of 18 healthy adolescent human males that was significantly different from a placebo. Fifty milligrams of ascorbic acid administered in this manner did not produce an effect on the EEG significantly different from placebo administration.

Pulmonary radiographic abnormalities in shock. Roentgen-clinical-pathological correlation.

Pulmonary insufficiency is one of the most frequent causes of death in patients subjected to shock. The continuous radiographic series, clinical data and autopsy findings in 46 patients are described. The changes in the chest radiograph can be related to the histological findings and are clearly related to changes found by arterial blood analysis. Given the appropriate history, the radiographic picture can provide a clue for the diagnosis of a shock syndrome.

Attraction between centric heterochromatin of human chromosomes.

An analysis of the pattern of association of acrocentric chromosomes with nonacrocentric chromosomes in human lymphocyte metaphases was performed. This pattern in nonrandom with respect to chromosome length and intrachromosomal distribution. There is a general preference for the centric regions, most pronounced at the proximal segments of the long arms of chromosomes 1, 9, and 16, which is interpreted to reflect heterochromatin attraction during interphase. Comparison of the association patterns of homologous chromosome 1's differing with regard to the size of their heterochromatic regions corroborates this interpretation. The possible significance of heterochromatin attraction for the formation of spontaneous and induced chromosome anomalies is discused.

DNA replication patterns of human chromosomes from fibroblasts and amniotic fluid cells revealed by a Giemsa staining technique.

A technique is described for visualizing late-replicating regions by a Hoechst 33258-Geimsa-staining procedure combining the techniques of Latt (1973) and of Perry and Wolff (1974). The advantages are two-fold: distinct bands are obtained and many possible mistakes and interpretation difficulties with autoradiography are avoided. The time sequence of late-replication patterns (excepting C-group chromosomes) has been established in human fibroblasts of adults, and these results have been compared with three of four different cell types from amniotic fluid. No significant differences in late-replication patterns and time sequence of the different cells could be discovered. As expected, the replication patterns are in good concordance with the patterns of G- and Q-bands. Some exceptions are described.

[Edlan-Mejchar's method as a preprosthetic surgical measure for the stabilization of total mandibular prostheses. Report on first experiences].

In the present 1-year study, the method inaugurated by Edlan and Mejchar as a "periodontal-preventive operation intended for deepening the lower oral vestibule" was used as a preprosthetic-surgical measure. The operating technique is described in detail and the suitability of this method is proved by the results from 13 patients. It is a very recommendable method for deepening the lower oral vestibule.

[Ovarian cancer in a monocygotic twin pair (Author's transl)].

We report on a female monocygotic twin pair, where the two women fell ill of an adenocarcinoma of the ovaries almost simultaneously. The paramesonephric epithelium of the coelom is discussed as origin for the disease. The concordance of the disease in the same environment points to the genetic factors is being more important in the development of the disease. Nevertheless a clearcut hereditary troit can not be defined at this time.

Effect on myocardial metabolic pattern of local complete and incomplete ischemia.

After local complete ischemia at normothermia of 60, 100, 140, and 180 min duration the status of the adenylic acid-creatine phosphate system in the canine myocardium recovered to 98, 85, 74, and 30 percent of the control values, whereas glycogen was restored even more. In the infarcted myocardium the extent of alterations of the metabolic status was a function of the residual blood flow. Deviations from a regular metabolic status developed if the blood flow dropped below about 35 ml/min/100 gm. This critical flow rate is expected to vary with the energy requirement of the heart, but it is in keeping with results obtained by Rudolph and coworkers (personal communication) who found that patients with a myocardial blood flow below 30 ml/min/100 gm had a life expectancy of less than 1 month. In the nonaffected myocardium, both in experiments with local complete ischemia and in experiments with infarction, the metabolic status was always within normal ranges. This is in contrast to results published by Gudbjarnason (1971/1972) and Gudbjarnason, Puri, and Mathes (1971), who found that in noninfarcted myocardium tissue levels of ATP and creatine phosphate decreased to about 50 percent of the control values and that there was no restoration to normal values within 10 days after infarction.

Leukocyte peroxidase deficiency in a family with a dominant form of Kuf's disease.

Use of a spectrophotomtetric assay of peroxidase with p-phenylenediamine as cosubstrate demonstrated deficient enzymne activity in leukocytes from two patients with a dominantly inherited form of ceroid lipofuscinosis (Kuf's disease) and a clinically hlealthy unaffected sibling. When the reaction was performned in the absence of added hydrogen peroxide, oxidation of the p-phenylenediamnine cosubstrate (indicating the presence of endogenous peroxide) occurred only with enzyme samnples from the three siblings but not with those from a large number of unrelated, unaffected controls. This demonstrates that the deficiency of peroxide) found previously in the recessively inherited infantile and juvenile formns of ceroid lipofuscinosis (Batten-Spielmeyer-Vogt disease) is also present in an adult form with dominant inheritance.
