[The morphogenesis and functional control of sebaceous glands with reference to free sebaceous glands].

Not very much was known until now about the physiology of sebaceous glands--especially about the regulation of their function. The author divides primary stimuli for the function of sebaceous glands during lifetime from secondary stimuli for the common supply of sebum. Other primary stimuli are a hypophysial sebotropic factor and other hormones of the gonads and adrenal glands. Capillary attraction and the autonomous system (in a low degree) belong to the secondary stimuli. Following the opinion of renowned authors sebaceous glands and production of sebum are just a special secretoric function of the epidermis. The author voices the hypothesis that androgens can stimulate epidermal basal cells to form sebaceous glands and to produce sebum. This is only possible under certain circumstances, above all only in non-keratinised epidermis.

[Five-years synchronized radiotherapy in treatment of carcinoma of the head and neck: clinical results, 1970--1974 (author's transl)].

Increased tumor radiosensitivity can be achieved by the technique of synchronisation, although as yet this relationship has only been partial. Our clinical experiences from 1970-1974 with this technique lead to the following considerations: 1. Synchronized radiotherapy (Telecobalt) is administered twice weekly, independent of adjunctive medications (such as fluoro-uracil, vincristin or bleomycin). 2. Synchronized radiotherapy does not change previous indications for operative intervention. 3. The described technique permits successful treatment of advanced tumors as well as postoperative tumor recurrences of recurrences in previously-irradiated tisssues. 4. The radiosensitivity of poorly oxygenated tumor tissues may be increased. 5. Radiation dosage must not be reduced. 6. Distant tumor metastases can also be treated with additional chemotherapy (as synchronized chemotherapy).

[Current remarks for use of the TNM classification on head and neck (author's transl)].

The revised rules of classifications of UICC (1973) for the field trail 1974-1977 will be published (nasopharynx, oropharynx, hypoparynx; larynx; oral cavity); own recommendations for the organs inner nose and sinuses, salivary glands and skin (head and neck) are added. In the enlarged TMN-key identification number, date of diagnosis, number of localisation, symbol c (certainty) and number of histology are mainly taken into consideration; stage and staging remain secondary. Checklists and proformas prepared for use in a computer simplify the documentation.
