[Problems of food absorption with reference to age and obesity].

In 1,000 obese persons and 250 persons with normal weight detailed nutrition anamneses concerning the average daily intake of calories, carbohydrates, protein, fats, cholesterol, saturated and repeatedly unsaturated fatty acids were made. Obese persons took less food than persons with normal weight--findings which are to be explained by the different habits of eating in the dynamic (the hyperalimentation takes place above all here) and in the static phase of obesity. There were no age tendencies in women, whereas in men, beginning with the 4th decade of life, all the nutrients were taken in a smaller quantity than in adolescence.

Indolmycin inhibits prokaryotic tryptophanyl-tRNA ligase.

Indolmycin specifically prevents the formation of tryptophanyl-tRNA in a prokaryotic system in vitro using Escherichia coli enzymes. However, the drug has little effect in an eukaryotic system in vitro (rat liver enzymes). Analysis of the type of inhibition revealed that indolmycin competes with tryptophan as a pure competitive inhibitor of prokaryotic tryptophanyl-tRNA ligase.

[Studies on the mechanical resistance of human erythrocytes under in-vitro conditions].

Hemolysis and resistance of erythrocytes were studies in-vitro in experiments on human ACD fresh blood and on heparinized fresh blood after oxygen dispersion, resp. mixed oxygen and carbon dioxide dispersion, and subsequent treatment in the hemoresistometer. Blood alkalinity increases under oxygen dispersion, acidity increases under dispersion with mixed gases. The length of the period of dispersion is more important for hemolysis than the change of pH. The hematocrit value influences the behavior of blood resistance. High values imply enhanced hemolysis. There is no significant difference of actual hemolysis values between oxygen and oxygen/carbon dioxide dispersion. A different behavior appears in the calculation of difference value of hemolysis after treatment in resistometer and the respective actual hemolysis.

Isolation and partial characterization of the major proteins of rabbit sciatic nerve myelin.

The P0, P1, and P2 proteins were isolated from rabbit sciatic nerve and demonstrated to have molecular weights of 30,000, 18,200, and 12,000, respectively, by polyacrylamide disk gel electrophoresis in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate. The P1 protein characterized by peptide mapping, optical rotatory dispersion and encephalitogenic activity appears to be quite similar to the CNS myelin basic protein. The P2 protein is distinctly different from the P1 protein as characterized by peptide mapping and optical rotatory dispersion. It appears to have a distinct secondary structure, predominantly of beta-configuration. The P0 protein is distinctly different from either of the basic proteins, especially with respect to its marked insolubility in aqueous solutions. It contains more than 1.0 mole of hexosamine which is not present in either the P1 or P2 protein. Both the P0 and P2 proteins failed to produce any evidence of experimental allergic encephalomyelitis or neuritis when injected into guinea pigs or monkeys. In contrast, the P1 protein produces experimental allergic encephalomyelitis in both species.
