[Studies on the mechano-electronic measurement of tooth mobility].

The correlations between dynamic and quasi-static mechano-electronic measurements of tooth mobility were investigated in more than 1500 teeth. The two methods correlate quite well with the conventional classification (in Germany). On the other hand, there is no correlation between dynamic and quasistatic mechano-electronic measurements. Nevertheless distinctive signs and periodontal findings could be verified by mechano-electronic evaluation of tooth mobility.

Immunohistochemical study of palatal salivary glands of denture wearing patients.

The binding pattern of antibodies against different cytokeratin (CK) polypeptides, tissue polypeptide antigen (TPA), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), lactoferrin (Lf), lysozyme (Ly) and secretory component (SC) in palatal glands (PSG) of long-term denture wearing patients has been studied to investigate immunohistochemically the localization of these marker proteins in normal PSG and in denture-induced sialadenitis of PSG. The study included palatal gland biopsies from 28 patients (15 f, 13 m; mean age 59 years), 17 of them with normal PSGs, 8 with focal obstructive sialadenitis, and 3 with diffuse sialadenitis. Presence of CK and TPA was found in all intra- and extraglandular salivary ducts, in the basophilic portions of acini, in some mucous acini, and in all atrophic acini. Increased expression of CEA and Lf was observed in inflammed areas of PSG which, on the other site, were devoid of Ly and SC. In the mucous acini of healthy PSG considerable basal Ly immunoreactivity was seen. SC was localized in almost all ductal cells and in some acinar cells. Appearance of Lf in the ductal cells of PSG indicates an early sign of palatal sialadenitis. Some distinctions in the expression pattern of the marker proteins between the mucous acini of major salivary glands and PSG point to differences in the functional activities of either group of salivary glands.

Antibodies to mouse mammary tumor virus-related antigen in sera of patients with breast carcinoma.

Sera from patients with breast carcinoma, benign breast disease, malignancies other than breast carcinoma, and healthy female controls were analyzed by indirect immunofluorescence for the presence of antibodies directed toward antigens of mouse mammary tumor. Sera from 56 to 137 (40.9%) patients with breast carcinoma were positive. Positive reactivity was also found in sera from 5 to 27 (18.5%) patients with benign breast disease, in 7 of 60 (11.7%) patients with malignancies other than breast carcinoma, and in 2 of 56 (3.6%) female controls. In the group of patients with breast carcinoma a correlation was noted between age and the probability of detection of these antibodies. Histopathologic examination of breast cancers indicated that antibodies to antigens in mouse mammary tumors were more often found in patients with infiltrating ductal carcinoma of the mucinous type than with other types of breast tumors. No correlation was demonstrable between the incidence of detection of these antibodies and the stage of the disease. Immunochemical analyses indicated that the antibody activity was present in IgG and IgM classes of immunoglobulins. The human antibodies to antigens in mouse mammary tumors could be removed from patients' sera by absorption with disrupted mouse mammary tumor virus (MMTV) but not with gp52 or gp34 (52,000 and 34,000 dalton polypeptides) of MMTV, or with Rauscher mouse leukemia virus (MLV).

[Epidemiologic studies on the occurrence of hepatitis B in dentists and their assistants in Bavaria].

A study of 586 dentists and 553 dental assistants revealed that the contamination of dentists with hepatitis B was three times higher than in the comparable control group. No elevated hepatitis B morbidity rate however could be determined for the dental assistants. The occupation-related risk of hapatitis B infection was one case for every 100 dentists per year. No serologic differences from the normal control group could be determined for dentists and dental assistants in regard to contamination with hepatitis A. The evaluation of the questionaire showed that most dentists and their assistants were not aware of their hepatitis infection. Protective epidemiologic and hygienic measures, for the most part, were not observed.

[The fitting behavior of rigid free-end prostheses].

In five cases, the embedment of balanced free-end prostheses was monitored quantitatively for a period of several weeks. It could be shown that embedment is time dependent and appears to be concluded only after a period of three weeks. The measured values ranged from 0.2 and 0.3 mm. In most cases, however, the primary embedment occurs within the first four or five days.
