[Basic peptides in bee venom, VI. Structure-activity studies on the anti-inflammatory effects of derivatives and fragments of the MCD-peptide (author's transl)].

Mastcell-degranulating peptide from bee venom exhibits anti-inflammatory activity in the Carrageenine-inflammation model on mice and rats. Its dose/response relationship corresponds to that of dexamethasone. In the 125I-rat serum albumin-test the substance shows an inhibitory effect of 87% on the developing Carrageenine edema at a dose of 1 mg/kg; in contrast the bee venom peptides apamin and melittin exhibit small edema supressing effects. The anti-inflammatory characteristics of MCD-peptide have to be considered with regard to its high basicity and specific molecular structure, determined by two disulfide-bridges for the derivaties with acetylated amino groups respectively with alkylated cysteine residues show no significant activity. A pentapeptide in the C-terminal region of MCD-peptide (Lys-Ile-Cys-Gly-Lys)2 inhibits the carrageenin edema to 55% at a dose of 10 mg/kg.

The inhibitory material in extracts from the bovine retractor penis muscle is not an adenine nucleotide.

Methods are described for the removal of adenosine or purine nucleotides from extracts of bovine retractor penis muscle (BRP). These methods did not interfere with the biological test preparations. Removal of adenosine and purine nucleotides by these methods did not modify the inhibitory action of the extract on the BRP. The effect of the extract on the BRP resembles that of inhibitory nerve stimulation. If the inhibitory substance present in the extract is the inhibitory transmitter, then the results indicate that, in this tissue, the transmitter is neither adenosine nor a purine nucleotide.

Acute plastic bowing fractures of the fibula.

Two cases of acute plastic bowing fractures of the fibula are described. A brief description of the mechanism of bone deformation under stress and the pathological cortical microfractures involved in bowing fractures is given.

Chronic response of rat brain norepinephrine and serotonin levels to endurance training.

Norepinephrine (NE) and serotonin (5-HT) concentrations were determined in three areas of the rat brain following 8 wk exposure to differing physical activity and dietary regimens. Animals were divided into sedentary and exercise groups, and one-half of each received either a normal or atherogenic diet. The exercise consisted of 30 min of treadmill running, 5 days/wk, for 8 wk. Brains were weighed and sectioned into cerebral cortex, cerebellum, and remainder (midbrain), and fluorometrically analyzed for NE and 5-HT content. In most brain areas, NE and 5-HT levels were significantly greater among exercise-normal diet and exercise-fat diet compared to both sedentary groups. In the cerebral cortex, exercise-normal diet rats possessed higher levels of NE and lower concentrations of 5-HT than sedentary animals. The atherogenic diet did not affect amine levels other than 5-HT in the cortex among exercise rats. The NE results are consistent with prior research indicating its control of sympathetic function. Increased levels of 5-HT in the midbrain may be the neurotransmittal adaptation responsible for decreased appetite and enhanced weight loss following chronic endurance exercise.

[The determination of the red cell isoenzymes 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (E.C.1.1.1.44) and acid phosphatase (E.C.3.1.3.2) by means of agarosegel thinlayer electrophoresis (author's transl)].

Methods for the determination of the red cell isoenzymes 6-PGD and acP by means of agarosegel thinlayer electrophoresis are referred. Using these relatively simple techniques, results can be obtained after at least two hours. The quality of separation in both systems is higher than that obtained after starch gel electrophoresis.

Brucellosis in Ontario: a case control study.

Data from cattle herds infected with brucellosis and from control (noninfected) herds were collected and analyzed using case control techniques. It appeared that herds located close to other infected herds and those herds whose owners made frequent purchases of cattle had an increased risk of acquiring brucellosis, particularly those who made purchases from other herds or from cattle dealers. Infected herds had a lower level of vaccination than noninfected herds. However, the percentage vaccinated was highly variable in each group. Vaccination per se did not appear to adversely influence the interpretation of serological test results nor did it appear to protect the individual animal. Once infected, the time required to become free of brucellosis was increased by large herd size and/or loose housing. Closed herds also took longer to become brucellosis free than more open herds. The percentage of animals removed from the herd was increased by active abortion. Those herds with multiple serological reactors (positives and questionables) at the first herd test after the imposition of quarantine had the highest percentage of cattle removed.

[Clinical evaluation of Australia-antigen detection (author's transl)].

The detection of Australia antigen is considered as indication for the presence of a hepatitis with a long incubation period (hepatitis B). Thereby, these findings are getting a considerable diagnostic and prognostic importance. Attempts are made by means of serological and clinical data from permanent blood donors and liver patients to demonstrate the importance of Australia antigen findings with regard to the prevention of transfusion hepatitis and to the clinical evaluation of acute and chronical hepatitis. Furthermore, the role of Australia antigen detection for diagnosis of liver-complaint is discussed.
