Massive periosteal new bone formation in ulcerative colitis.

A case of periosteal new bone formation in a 14-year-old girl with recurrent ulcerative colitis is reported. There was exacerbation of the periosteal new bone formation during acute episodes of colitis, and incorporation of the periosteal appositions into the underlying bone during remission.

Development of deciduous and permanent dentition in Tarsius and its phylogenetic significance.

The earliest stages of development and differentiation of deciduous and permanent teeth were studied in prenatal and perinatal tarsiers. Both deciduous and successional teeth develop at loci for I1, I2, C, P2-4. Relationships among the dental lamina, enamel organs, and successional lamina were used to determine tooth homologies. During the second half of prenatal life, dP2 and dI2 undergo abnormal development. Their dentin becomes fragmented, and these teeth are shed or resorbed without eruption during the perinatal period. Our study provides evidence of an intermediate phase in evolutionary tooth loss. These findings do not corroborate recent hypotheses of primate phylogeny based mainly on tooth eruption patterns.

Computed tomography in the diagnosis of splenic infarction.

The demonstration of splenic infarction by computed tomographic scanning is described in the following report. CT yields a characteristic pattern which is highly diagnostic. The role of angiography and scintigraphy in splenic infarction is discussed.

[Biologic psychiatric research and psychiatric pharmacotherapy. Critical remarks on methods (author's transl)].

To guard satisfactorily against the discrepancy between positive experience in the field of pharmacopsychiatry and negative results in the possibility, therapeutic success or other findings of biologic psychiatric research requires a critical analysis of methods. It is concluded with a catalog of demands in the field of evaluation research. Analyses of individual cases and supporting experimental psychopathological research occupy an important role in this. Finally the obstacles to gaining knowledge in biologic psychiatric research are discussed and, deduced from this, the possible application of a research concept of Herrmann is also proposed for our specialty which would create the principles for a theoretical pluralism.

[Effect of amitrol on Claviceps fusiformis, strain SD 58].

The influence of amitrole (3-amino-1,2,4-triazole) on growth, alkaloid formation and on some aromatic as well as ergoline pathway specific enzymes were studied in Claviceps strain, SD 58. In a phosphate-rich medium the addition of amitrole can partially reverse the alkaloid-depressing effect of phosphate. Using a typical fermentation medium amitrole reduces the activities of ergoline specific enzymes but increases drastically tryptophan synthase activity and to a lesser extent transaminase of aromatic amino acids.

[The consequences of long term demographic changes (author's transl)].

The economic and power systems are dependent on the number of people as much in a hunter and gatherer society as in a highly industrialized society. The disregard for elemental demographic changes threatens to make the number of people to a problem. The family and society are not dichotomy. There are no separate economic spheres of living. Production, consumption, hygiene, number of children, and raising of children as much as economic technological development occur in a single socialsphere. The work distribution between men and women is dependent on demographic changes. Changing structures of populations have changes in the reproductive behaviour as a consequence. A pre-requisite to recognize the abover facts is cognitive capability.

[Mortality as a central process in society (author's transl)].

Population politicians and population planners face great difficulties in the realization of their goals. They are obliged to set preferences in their work such as an increase in the birth rate. They overlook that preferences are not empirical phenomena which can be measured in the same way as the rate marriage, death and birth. Therefore the population politician makes his decisions according to ideological concepts which is not too successful. Appeals to the common sense only surface old prejudices and views. The same is true of an appeal to religious principles. Myths, misconceptions and dubious rules of thumb are unnecessarily generated. An attempt is made to explain demographic problems in industrial societies with the example of the development of the death rate. The goal is to bring problems closer to a solution by documentation and interpretation which have far reaching consequences for the society and its economy.

[The localization and differential diagnosis of benign and malignant gynaecological tumours in the axial computer assisted tomogram (author's transl)].

40 computer assisted tomographies of the vagina, the uterus and the ovaries were evaluated. The differential diagnosis between malignant and benign neoplasms is difficult unless there is spread into the soft tissues. The early diagnosis of ovarian neoplasms by axial computer assisted tomography is impossible. We are of the opinion that axial computer assisted tomography should be performed as early as possible in the diagnosis of local recurrences of malignant tumours of the female genital tract.

[Plain x-ray studies of bone material in the repair of fractures (author's transl)].

Ten patients who had had osteosynthetic repairs of bone defects carried out by means of bone grafts were studied. It was shown that magnification radiography permitted better and more complete evaluation of the healing process. Trabecular bone structure can be recognised and changes in the configuration and position of the trabeculae during their incorporation into the bone can be evaluated.

[Obstructive and non-obstructive ureteral valves in early infancy (author's transl)].

Cork-screw formation or kinking of the subpelvine ureter, mostly bilateral, are common findings in the routine urogram of the infant without functional effects on the urine flow. Otherwise true ureteral valves with obstructive effect, a congenital malformation in early infancy, are relatively rare. We present two cases with recurrent infection of the urinary tract and clearly visible subpelvine ureteral valves in the urogram. In one patient an obstructive pyeloectasia could not be demonstrated in spite of significant multiple valves.

[Cholecystocholangiography via short-term infusion of iodoxamate (author's transl)].

The cholegraphic agent iodoxamate (Endomirabil) was examined in respect of its contrasting performance and it side effects in the application form of a short infusion in 141 patients. Besides the global contrasting frequency of the biliary system we determined the connection between contrasting rate and the time post infusion. Results were compared with data from literature and with those obtained in an own study on the cholegraphic agent iotroxic acid (Biliscopin). If applied via short-term infusion, iodoxamate (Endomirabil) shows advantages over conventional manual injections techniques. Contrasting potency and side effects of iodoxamic acid and iotroxic acid are of the same order of magnitude for both products.

[Echographic diagnosis and localization of parathyroid gland adenomas].

The sonographic morphology of adenomas is studied on the basis of 7 sonographically identified and surgically confirmed adenomas of the parathyroid gland, taking the available literature into consideration. Information is given on differential diagnosis against normal anatomical structures and pathological processes. A correlation is established between sonomorphological and pathologico-anatomical findings.

[Value of sonography in the diagnosis of decompensated autonomous thyroid adenoma].

In 30 patients with decompensated autonomous adenoma of the thyroid gland, the possibility was investigated whether sonography of the thyroid gland could replace the thyroid stimulation scintigram or a diagnostically insufficient, saturated scintigram. It was found that the thyroid sonogram--which has a lower specificity--has a markedly higher sensitivity than the saturated scintigram of the thyroid gland.
