[Comparative studies on the lipid content of the cerebrospinal fluid and serum lipoprotein fractions in patients with discopathic changes].

The reported investigations were carried out in 12 subjects with low back pains caused by lumbar discopathy. The studied material were cerebrospinal fluid samples obtained during lumbar tap and blood obtained from the antecubital vein. In the fluid, serum and lipoprotein fractions the concentrations of cholesterol, triglycerides and phospholipids were determined. It was found that the concentration of the lipids determined in the cerebrospinal fluid in patients with discopathy was not different from that demonstrated in healthy subjects. The lipid content of the fluid differed significantly from that of the serum but was very similar to the composition of lipids in the high density lipoprotein fraction (HDL). The summed up concentration of cholesterol, triglycerides and phospholipids was about 170 times lower than that in the HDL fraction.

[Inositol in the cerebrospinal fluid, plasma and erythrocytes in spinal pain syndromes].

The studies, performed on 40 patients with brachialgia and ischialgia syndromes, showed higher CSF inositol concentrations in comparison with healthy subjects. The highest rise was observed particularly in patients in the initial stage of disease, while the rise was lower in more severe forms of the disease and in cases with root compression confirmed by radiculography. Blood plasma and erythrocyte concentrations of inositol and phosphatidylinositol were within normal range, although they significantly differed in various brachialgia and ischialgia syndromes.

Changes in the concentrations of certain biochemical parameters in the peripheral blood during exercise and restitution after bloodletting.

The reported investigations were carried out in 18 men aged 19 to 23 years in whom 400 ml of whole blood was removed. On the day before bloodletting, one hour and 24 hours after it the studied men carried out a 10 minute exercise on a Monark cycle ergometer at a workload raising the heart rate to 170/min. Before the exercise, immediately after it and in the 30th minute of restitution venous blood samples were taken for determinations of the concentrations of total protein, albumins, free fatty acids, glucose, lactate and pyruvate, and the activity of lactic dehydrogenase, alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase. During that time the acid-base equilibrium was determined in capillary blood. After bloodletting the concentrations of albumins, total protein and free fatty acids were decreased parallelly to haematocrit value decrease (p less than 0.05) and glucose concentration increased slightly (p less than 0.05). Enzyme activity was decreased slightly (p greater than 0.05). The partial oxygen pressure decreased, that of carbon dioxide increased, and hydrogen ion concentration rose. These changes were more pronounced after 24 hours than 1 hour after bloodletting. After submaximal exercise and in the 30th minute of restitution as well as 1 and 24 hours after bloodletting the changes in the concentrations of the biochemical parameters, enzyme activity and acid-base equilibrium were similar as after bloodletting.

Changes in concentrations of basic energy-yielding substrates in plasma during maximal effort and postexercise restitution in relation to training level.

Fifty-three cyclists aged from 19 to 32 years were divided into three groups depending on the degree of physical fitness. Group I comprised 13 cyclists with high fitness, group II 19 cyclists with medium physical fitness, and group III 22 cyclists with low physical fitness. All studied subjects carried out work on a Monark cycle ergometer until they refused to go on (exhaustion). During the exercise the consumption of oxygen was determined and the heart rate was measured. Other determinations included the levels of free fatty acids, glucose, amino-acid nitrogen, total protein, lactate in the venous blood and haematocrit index at rest, after the exercise and in the 15th and 30th minutes of postexercise restitution. The differences between the groups were analysed. It was found that in group I the blood glucose level rose more than in the other groups, and the levels of FFA and amino-acid nitrogen increased while in groups II and III they decreased during the exercise. The direction of changes of the various parameters during the restitution was similar in all groups but their intensity was different in individual groups. Lactate concentration showed no differences between the studied groups during the exercise as well as during the restitution.

[Inositol in the cerebrospinal fluid in various nervous system diseases].

The authors studied the changes of inositol concentration in the cerebrospinal fluid in 97 neurological patients. The highest values were found in cases of chronic ischalgia or brachial plexus painful syndromes and in multiple sclerosis, and the lowest ones in patients with generalized epileptic seizures. Intermediate values were observed in cases of headaches of different aetiology, in painful spinal syndromes without radiological changes, epidemic vertigo and craniocerebral injuries with brain commotion.

Exercise effect on certain biochemical factors in the plasma in untrained subjects and in systematically trained cyclists.

Thirty-seven cyclists participating in long-distance road races were exposed to maximal exercise closely before the onset of racing season. Forty young males (medical students) of average physical fitness had similar exposure. In both groups determinations of the concentrations of free acids, glucose, amino acid nitrogen and lactate in the plasma of venous blood were done before the exercise, immediately after it, and in the 15th and 30th minutes of restitution. The differences between both groups were compared using the t test of Student. It was found that during maximal exercise glucose concentration increased more in the trained subjects than in the untrained ones, and remained increased at the restitution time. In the untrained subjects the concentrations of PFA and amino acid nitrogen decreased after the exercise, while in the group of cyclists it showed no significant changes. In contrast to the untrained group in the group of cyclists FFA concentrations decreased during restitution. Despite similar increase in heart rate and similar value of maximal workload in both groups the concentration of lactate was significantly lower in the group of cyclists.

Effect of catecholamines on enzyme release from human adipose tissue cells.

Effect of adrenaline (A) and noradrenaline (NA) on the release of enzymes were studied in the isolated human adipocytes incubated in Krebs-Hanseleit buffer to which albumins saturated with fatty acids or albumins, from which fatty acids were partly removed, were added. In the incubation fluid the activity of lactic dehydrogenase, malic dehydrogenase, isocitrate dehydrogenase or pyruvate kinase was determined. Besides that, the effects of adrenaline and noradrenaline on the content of non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) in the adipocytes and on the release of glycerol into the incubation fluid were studied. Both A and NA stimulated the release of all examined enzymes into the incubation medium. The amount of the released enzymes, determined on the basis of changes in their activity in the incubation medium, depended on the degree of albumin saturation with fatty acids. Increased release of enzymes into the incubation fluid was associated with a rise in the content of NEFA in the adipocytes. Gycerol release into the incubation medium was independent of the degree of albumin saturation with fatty acids.

The effect of glucagon on myoinositol levels in the blood serum and its excretion with urine.

The investigations were carried out with a group of ten healthy men aged 20--26 years who were injected intravenously with glucagon in a single dose of 50 microgram per kg of body weight. Glucagon had no effect on myoinositol levels in the blood serum. It caused however, a significant decrease in the myoinositol discharge into urine and lowered the index of renal myoinositol clearance. The creatinine clearance index remained unchanged.

Isolation of a peptide inhibiting glucose absorption by red blood cells from plasma of healthy subjects performing physical exercise.

Isolation of a peptide inhibiting glucose absorption by red blood cells from plasma of healthy subjects performing physical exercise. Acta Physiol. Pol. 1977, 28 (2): 117--125. A peptide inhibiting glucose absorption by erythrocytes was isolated from the plasma of healthy males age 23-24 years subjected to physical exercise of increasing intensity from 1 to 3 W/kg of body weight during 18 min. This peptide was not found in the blood plasma obtained from these subjects before exercise as well as in the initial stage of exercise. It appeared in the plasma at the end of the exercise period when symptoms of fatigue were already evident. In view of this it is suggested to call it "fatigue peptide".
