[Orthodontic treatment in unilateral cleft lip and palate patients with crossbite].

Serious malocclusion is often seen in the cleft lip and palate patients. Orthodontic treatment is very complex and difficult. The aim of this study was to investigate the characteristics of the treatment in this kind of the patients through the clinical treatment of the thirty-two patients. We conclude (1) Many patients need alveolar bone grafting in order to award good arch form and occlusion. (2) It need longer time in expanding of the upper arch and retaining. (3) Main changes after treatment of edgewise appliance took place in dental-alveolar region. (4) 34.3% of the patients need orthognathic surgery to improve their profile. So it indicated that reverse headgear should be used in the early time for the cleft patients to get a good treatment result.

[The effect of pH on anti-corrosion nature of amalgams].

Corrosion behavior of alloys are affected not only by themselves but also by environment, such as a change of pH. In this study, the corrosion behavior of four dental amalgams (L, C, DA, GK) in Fusayama saliva with different pH 6.65 and 4.00 are evaluated by electrochemical techniques. It seems that changes in pH may exert different effects on the four amalgams. In the acid environment DA exhibits best anti-corrosion nature and followed by GK, C, and L, which conforms to clinical observations. This may be resulted either from amalgams themselves or from conditions of corrosion products of amalgams' surface. Thus, consideration must be given to the changing oral environment when screening anti-corrosion alloys.

[Detection of rubella antibody by using indirect mix enzyme immunosorbent assay].

Monoclonal antibody has the characteristics of high purity, specificity and strong activity. For this reason, we adopted a monoclonal antibody (R-McAb), against rubella to coat the polystyrene EIA microtitration plate for the first step. Then we followed an indirect enzyme immunoassay to detect rubella immunoglobulin G antibody. We call this method the indirect mix enzyme immunosorbent assay (IMEIA). The 257 serum specimens collected from different human groups tested by this assay (IMEIA) and rubella hemagglutination inhibitiion (HAI) test gave a 100% agreement.

[Determination of metronidazole in serum and cerebrospinal fluid with reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography].

A reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatographic method for the determination of metronidazole (MTZ) in rabbit serum and cerebro-spinal fluid has been developed. The method is simple and convenient. The analysis was carried out with Zorbax C8 column, NaH2PO4(0.0075mol/L, pH 4.0)-CH3OH(4:11) as mobile phase and UV detector at 320nm, by using hydrochlorothiazide as internal standard. The standard curve is linear over the range from 0.5ng/L to 80.0ng/L in sample with correlation coefficient of 0.9998. The recovery of metronidazole from rabbits serum and cerebrospinal fluid are 97.1% +/- 1.5% and 97.4% +/- 1.6% respectively. The minimum detectable quantity is 80ng/mL in sample (S/N = 3). Under the chromotographic condition, the consistency of MTZ of the serum and cerebrospinal fluids of rabbits were detected separately after taking MTZ (0.1mg/g) orally. The drug-time curve was obtained and a satisfactory result was achieved. The new findings provide conditions for further exploration of the process of pharmacokinetics.

[Collisional energy transfer of the Rb (7 2D) state by ground state K atoms].

In the K-Rb vaper mixtures, the two-photon stepwise excitation of rubidium atoms from the ground state to the state Rb 7 2D is obtained by the use of a rubidium lamp and a cw dye laser. The cross sections for the collisional process Rb (7 2D) +K (4S) -->Rb (5S) +K (7S. 5D) have been measured by observation of the resulting fluorescence. The ratio of K (7S. 5D) to Rb7D fluorescence contains a contribution from K 7S<==>5D mixing. The contribution could effectively be subtracted out using a second experiment in which a potassium lamp and a cw dye laser were used to pump the K7S or 5D state, and the ratio of 7S to 5D or 5D to 7S fluorescence was monitored. The cross sections (in 10(-15)cm2) for Rb7D-->K7S. 5D excitation transfer are 25.8 +/- 10. 3 and 1.5 +/- 0.6 respectively.

[SERS and electrochemistry studies on the structure of thiourea adsorption layer on silver electrode].

The structure of thiourea adsorption layer on silver electrode was studied by SERS and electrochemistry. It was found that the thiourea can be adsorbed on the electrode surface and can inhibit the reaction of hydrogen separation. And a change in structure of the thiourea adsorption layer on electrode surface took place at the voltage of about -0.6V. The further SERS experiment showed that the thiourea adsorption layer has a loose structure at about -0.9V and a compact structure at about -0.3V - -0.5V. The transition region is at about -0.6V - -0.8V.

[Energy pooling collisions between excited Na and K atoms].

Two different atomic species, sodium and potassium, are resonantly excited in a ceel by a CW dye laser and a potassium lamp, respectively. The density of the excited Na (3P) atoms in the cell is measured directly using the absorption-equivalent-width technique on the lines of the diffuse series. To isolate the heteronuclear contribution in the fluorescence spectrum, a modulation detection technique is adopted. The energy-pooling collisions between Na (3P) and K (4P) are observed and cross sections are obtained.

Heterogeneity of airway smooth muscle at tissue and cellular levels.

Heterogeneity of smooth muscle behavior is rapidly emerging as an important phenomenon. However, it is only recently that investigators have begun to explore its physiological and pathogenic importance. Stenmark's group recently reported the existence of four subpopulations of smooth muscle cells in pulmonary artery, and noted that only a specific group of cells was likely responsible for the hyperplasia of smooth muscle in the hypertensive artery. Our studies reported here were focused on determining whether heterogeneity of contractile properties existed in airway smooth muscle cells. Firstly, mechanical properties of muscle strips, free of cartilage and epithelium, were compared among the different generations of canine airway from trachea down to bronchial generation 6. Two distinct groups of smooth muscle were detected from these airways: (i) an extrapulmonary group, consisting of muscle strips from the trachea, and bronchial generation 1 and 2, characterized by higher maximum shortening capacity (delta Lmax) and zero-load velocity (V0) of shortening; (ii) an intrapulmonary group, containing bronchi from generation 3 to 6, with lower delta Lmax and V0. This led to the implication that smooth muscles from these two groups consisted of different types of cells. Secondly, single smooth muscle cells were isolated from trachea and bronchus (from generation 3 to 6) enzymatically, and the unloaded shortening capacity of fresh isolated cells was measured employing electrical field stimulation at room temperature. Two types of cells were identified from these preparations based on the length of muscle cells: type I, with a mean length of 110 +/- 3 microns (SE), predominated in trachea (up to 84%); type II, with a mean length of 200 +/- 9 microns (SE), accounted for 58% in bronchus. The mechanical properties of these two types of cells were also different. Type I cells shortened by 28% of their original lengths in response to maximal stimulation, while most type II cells (90% of total type II cells) shortened 16% (type IIA), and the remainder shortened 58% (type IIB). Because of the paucity of information about the orientation and arrangement of these different types of smooth muscle cells in the airway tree, it is difficult to apply these data directly for interpretation of differences in mechanical properties of smooth muscle cells obtained from strips from extrapulmonary and intrapulmonary airways. Existence of great numbers of cells with lower shortening capacity in intrapulmonary airways may be the major factor responsible for lower mechanical performance of these airway smooth muscle strips. The relatively lower mechanical performance of intrapulmonary airway smooth muscle may be of importance in preventing excessive narrowing of these airways during muscle contraction and optimizing airflow.

[The observation on the disinfecting efficiency of the disinfectant 93].

Disinfectant 93 is a colorless and transparent liquid. It contains surfactant and hand-protective. Its major component is Di(octyl amino-ethyl) glycine hydrochloride. 99.8% natural bacteria could be removed from the medical staff's hands by using the disinfectant 93 to scrub for 1 min twice. According to the standard of the Ministry of Public Health, it is allowed that the amount of bacteria on the hands is less than equal to 10cfu/cm2 under the condition of class III, and less than equal to 5cfu/cm2 under the condition of class I [symbol: see text] II, in which the qualification rate reached to 100% and 98%, respectively. The average elimination rate of natural bacteria reached to 99.5% and 99.3%, when the hands of surgical operators were disinfected with the disinfectant 93 after scrubbing and brushing with soap. The results showed that disinfecting efficiency of the disinfectant 93 was stronger, its continued effects were also visible, and it wasn't irritative for skin.

Quantitative three-dimensional intravascular ultrasound.

Three-dimensional (3-D) intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) allows for the visualization of entire coronary segments, provides more detailed insights into the geometry of atherosclerotic plaques and facilitates serial studies. Automated quantitative 3-D IVUS methods reduce the analysis time and the subjectivity of boundary tracing, and permit complex IVUS studies. The 3-D IVUS approach is not restricted to research applications, but may be used as a valuable clinical tool. Evaluation of the coronary segment of interest before catheter-based coronary interventions provides information which may facilitate the selection of interventional devices. Moreover, 3-D IVUS allows for a careful assessment of the procedural results and potential post-procedural complications. ECG-gated image acquisition, automated contour detection, and approaches using data of both 3-D IVUS and biplane angiography represent the recent progress in this field. Three-dimensional IVUS will surely gain further importance and become a routine technique, if the interest and research effort is sustained.

Potentials of volumetric blood-flow measurement.

Current intravascular ultrasound techniques produce real-time imaging of a vessel cross-section with a scan plane normal to blood flow. When randomly distributed blood particles travel through this ultrasound imaging plane, the received echo signals decorrelate as a function of time. The speed of such a decorrelation procedure is proportional to the flow velocity. This phenomenon provides a potential to estimate blood velocities by means of decorrelation analysis. In this paper, we present a method for measuring local blood velocity and quantifying volume flow directly from cross-sectional intravascular ultrasound data. This method is based on multiple decorrelation assessments with a sequence of radio frequency echo signals. The velocity measurement is obtained by comparing the measured decorrelation value with the prior knowledge of the beam characteristics of an intravascular ultrasound transducer. Volume flow is derived by integrating the cross-sectional area and its corresponding velocity vector over the vessel lumen. The decorrelation-based method was tested in vitro with a flow phantom. Measurements were also carried out in vivo in pig experiments to determine the usefulness of this method in clinical settings. Preliminary results of these experiments indicate that the proposed decorrelation method is able to extract cross-sectional velocity profiles and volumetric flow both in vitro and in vivo.

[Construction of yeast ADH2-SUC2 hybrid promoter and its regulation in gene expression].

By fusing the upstream activation sequence (UAS) of ADH2 gene to the 5' end of a series of deletions in the upstream region of SUC2 gene, 4 expression plasmids YFD110 delta 1, YFD110 delta 9, YFD110 delta 17 and YFD110 delta 11 were constructed. They contained different hybrid promoters for transcription of SUC2 gene. After transforming them together with two control plasmids YFD26 delta 1, YFD25 into yeast. S. cerevisiae Y33 respectively, the transformants were grown in the repression or derepression media and the invertase produced by each transformants were analyzed by colormetry and gel electrophoresis. The results were as follow is: (1) UASSUC2 and UASADH2 in the hybrid plasmid YFD110 delta 1 worked synergically under derepression condition. Under repression condition, Y33/YFD110 delta 1 produced very low level of glycosylation invertase. (2) Compared with three different derepression media, the medium containing low concentration glucose gave higher derepression efficiency of glycosylated invertase than the media containing glycerol and ethanol.
