Decline in CD4+ cell numbers in cats with naturally acquired feline immunodeficiency virus infection.

T-cell subsets were studied by fluorescence-activated cell sorter analysis in 57 feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV)-seropositive cats with naturally acquired FIV infection to see whether CD4(+)-CD8+ alterations were comparable to those observed in human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients. CD4+ values were decreased and CD8+ values were increased. The CD4+/CD8+ ratio was reduced to 1.6, compared with 3.3 in 33 FIV-seronegative control cats. Variance analysis of data showed a significant influence of FIV seropositivity, sex, and spaying of female cats on CD4+ values. CD8+ values were significantly influenced by FIV seropositivity, age, and breed. These findings indicate a similarity between FIV and human immunodeficiency virus infections, as far as alterations of T-cell subsets are concerned.

Age Factors

[Rhinoscopy in dogs and cats].

Rostral and caudal rhinoscopy in dogs and cats facilitates the investigation of the nasal cavity and accurate biopsy. Rostral rhinoscopy can be performed by rigid endoscopes; caudal rhinoscopy requires flexible endoscopes. Deep anaesthesia or additional analgesia with local anaesthesia is necessary. The nasal cavity is assessed by its form, colour, surface of the mucous membrane, hyperemia, plaques, lesions, and the secretion is assessed by its quantity, colour and viscosity. Foreign bodies and neoplasia must also be looked for. Case reports with abnormal findings are described.

[Bronchoscopy in small animals].

Indications for bronchoscopy, the equipment and technique performance in dogs and cats are presented. The method is invasive, therefore exact indications such as chronic cough of noncardial origin, foreign bodies, parasitic invasion, paralysis of the larynx or tumours are required. Bronchoscopy enables the surgeon to take samples of bronchial discharge.

Atrial natriuretic peptide concentration in dogs with congestive heart failure, chronic renal failure, and hyperadrenocorticism.

The function of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) is claimed to be control of salt and water homeostasis, and thus, the hormone may be involved in the pathogenesis of certain diseases with impaired volume regulation. We, therefore, studied plasma ANP concentration in dogs with chronic renal failure, congestive heart failure, and hyperadrenocorticism. Dogs with chronic renal failure had twofold higher plasma ANP concentration (16.2 +/- 5.8 fmol/ml), compared with healthy dogs (8.3 +/- 3.5 fmol/ml). An even more distinct increase (sixfold) of plasma ANP concentration was found in dogs with congestive heart failure (52.9 +/- 29.7 fmol/ml). In contrast, dogs with hyperadrenocorticism did not have high ANP plasma concentration (5.5 +/- 2.0 fmol/ml). High-performance liquid chromatographic analysis of plasma from dogs with congestive heart failure indicated that, in addition to the normal circulating form of ANP (99-126), the unprocessed precursor ANP (1-126) is detectable in the circulation. These qualitative and quantitative alterations of plasma ANP concentration in dogs further suggest involvement of this peptide in the development and/or maintenance of diseases associated with impaired volume regulation.

Adrenocortical Hyperfunction

[Indocyanine green test in the dog].

The ICG test is recommended as a replacement for the nowadays rarely performed BSP test. ICG has less side effects, and it has a greater range of use. Extrahepatic influences are of little importance. Disadvantages are the greater cost and extra equipment required, the labile nature of the dye solution and the calculation procedure. Reference ("normal") values of the clearance coefficient are 0.044 to 0.131 min-1 and those for the half life 5.2 to 11.2 min. The test is suitable for information about the secretion of the whole liver and the state of its circulation.

[Effect of sports on the distribution of body fat].

The pathogenetic effectiveness of the risk factor overweight is essentially modified by the distribution of the fatty depot. The form of obesity, the primary obesity, which above all is to be found in men is connected with a relatively high risk for the appearance and progression of several chronic diseases which at present determine morbidity. An only two-hour sports activity per week has a great influence on the size and the distribution of the lipopexia. Sporting persons have less body fat than inactive ones. In particular in sporting males the deposition of fat in the abdominal region is much limited.
