Defective desaturation and elongation of n-6 and n-3 fatty acids in hypertensive patients.

Hypertensive patients had higher levels of linoleic acid (LA) in serum lipids than normal controls. Administration of large doses of LA failed to raise the percentage of its metabolite arachidonic acid (AA) in serum lipids. Similarly, intake of large amounts of alpha-linolenic acid (alpha-LNA) failed to increase the amount of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). The percentage of EPA in serum lipids could readily be increased by direct administration of comparably low doses in a mackerel diet. Hypertensive subjects seem to desaturate and elongate LA and alpha-LNA only very slowly.

[Principles of order in the color systems of the 17th century. (Franciscus Aguilonius--Athanasius Kircher--Isaac Newton)].

Since Aristotle there have been two colour order systems: The first is according to the subjective luminosity of colours, and the second is that which is found in the rainbow. Almost all the medieval concepts of colour order were based on the subjective luminosity of colours. At the beginning of the 17th century Franciscus Aguilonius still described the traditional sequence according to subjective luminosity: white, yellow, red, blue and black in his colour order system. - Athanasius Kircher demonstrated two sequences: The first was the same as Aguilonius 's, completed by lists of symbolic qualities attributed to the respective colours; The second was the sequence of the prismatic spectrum; red, orange, yellow, green and blue. Violet was still missing from his spectrum. For that reason the idea of arranging the colours in a closed circle did not occur to him. - Isaac Newton added violet to the prismatic spectrum. Hence he was able to bring the ends of the spectrum together, forming a colour circle. He completed the colours of his spectrum "with those purple hues which, although not present in the spectrum, were familiar to painters and dyers , and in this way closed up the colour-circle into a band returning on itself" (W. Ostwald). Thus he combined the perceptual concept of the colour wheel, containing pairs of complementary colours, with the physical concept of the prismatic spectrum.

Lipid and blood pressure-lowering effect of mackerel diet in man.

Fifteen healthy volunteers were put on a mackerel and herring diet, consisting of a prescribed daily isocaloric regimen in a cross-over design, for 2 weeks. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA - C20:5, n-3) was predominantly incorporated into cholesterol esters, whereas docosahexaenoic acid (C22:6, n-3) appeared more in serum triglycerides, indicating that the function of the latter may be different from that of EPA. After mackerel ingestion, serum triglycerides, total cholesterol and lecithin cholesterol acyl transferase (LCAT) activity were significantly decreased, returning to basal levels 3 months later. Low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and postheparin lipolytic activity (PHLA) remained unchanged at the end of the mackerel diet. Generally, after the herring diet the differences were minor, only LCAT activity being significantly decreased. A markedly lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure at the end of the mackerel period could be observed. After herring diet a slight diminution of blood pressure was not significant. Accordingly, plasma noradrenaline was only significantly decreased at the end of the mackerel period. Dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (DBH) activity in serum had no differences before, during and after the study. From the data presented it can be said that a mackerel diet exerts a beneficial influence on cardiovascular risk.

[Symbolic representations of the eye in an ars memorandi of the 16th century].

Four illustrations containing various eye symbols are discussed. They appear in an early 16th-century mnemonic textbook of the Ars memorandi genre, called Rationarium evangelistarum. It was intended to help students to memorize the New Testament. The eye symbols in it refer twice to the healing of the blind, and once to the proverbial beam in the eye. Furthermore, a precursor of the later and very popular motif of the eye of God can also be found. It is easy to recognize eye symbols--even when they are simply depicted--since the eyes not only of human beings, but of all vertebrates are similar in their external appearance. This may help to explain why the eye is a common symbol in art, magic, ornamental decoration, and many other areas.

[Systemic cutis laxa-like pseudoxanthoma elasticum].

According to Pope the pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) can be divided into four types using clinical genetical criteria. In contrast to the classical form the recessive type II is not only characterized by a wrinkeled appearance and laxity of the skin, furthermore there are no clinical symptoms indicating visceral disease. We report two patients with cutis laxa-like skin. In addition the patients suffered from pathological changes of the eye. In one of them an alteration of the peripher vascular system could be observed.
