Prospects of three-dimensional high resolution electron microscopy of non-periodic structures.

In the first part of the paper the general features of three-dimensional electron microscopy of non-periodic structures at high resolution are discussed. Such an analysis requires series of 20 or more exposures of mechanically moved specimens. It is fundamentally important that the integral radiation dose, however, need not be increased--three-dimensional analysis yields extra information without additional radiation loading. It is demonstrated that the constraints characteristic for atomic resolution can in future facilitate many difficulties like restricted tilting range (conical tilting), inaccuracies in the refinement of the origin determination etc. Data collection up to atomic resolution is possible with existing image reconstruction methods if the chromatic spread of the cathodes can be partially corrected. The relatively great radiation induced changes of "stable" specimens will require additional averaging in the experiment (quasi-simultaneous registration). The advantage of a time dependent analysis of radiation sensitive structures--especially the possibility of using redundancies in the analysis (trace structure analysis)--is discussed. The experimental part (studies of radiation damage and three-dimensional work on carbon foils) presents examples of such analyses. The main experimental difficulty consists in the collection of many exposures with no extra load of the specimen in the intervals between exposures.

[Occult nasopharyngeal carcinoma (author's transl)].

Clinical and histological examination of a cervical lymph node, removed from a 15-year-old boy, revealed nasopharyngeal carcinoma as the probable diagnosis. But the decisive diagnostic pointer was a markedly raised Epstein-Barr virus antibody titre, which gives the diagnosis at a time when there may not as yet be clinical evidence of carcinoma. Serial serum titre determinations are of prognostic value: with increasing spread of the tumour there is a rise in antibody titre. Autopsy confirmed that the nasopharynx had been the site of the primary tumour.

Role of vasoactive substances in active hyperemia in skeletal muscle (38520).

A prolonged, 2-hr period of exercise hyperemia in the canine gracilis muscle was associated with initial increases in the arteriovenous differences for potassium, hydrogen and osmolality. However, that for hydrogen decreased and those for potassium and osmolality became negligible by the 120th min while blood flow remained elevated. Thus, potassium and osmolality do not appear to participate importantly in the maintenance of exercise hyperemia in canine gracilis muscle. A bioassay muscle did not respond with comparable dilation when submaximal, graded levels of exercise hyperemia were induced in an upstream, donor muscle but did respond more comparably in terms of magnitude and time course when the exercise was more severe. Thus, stable vasoactive substances may not entirely account for exercise hyperemia and the study fails to provide evidence that the capillary acts as a significant barrier to the vasoactive substances.

[Idiopathic orthostatic hypotension].

The disease picture of idiopathic orthostatic hypotonia is described from a clinical and histological point of view with reference to a case treated by the present authors. The independent character of this particular ailment may be considered as resulting from the virtually uncontrollable orthostatic decreases in blood pressure in connection with the progressive disorders especially of the motor system. Also, the etiology is not yet fully understood.
