Alpha hemispheric asymmetry of males and females on verbal and non-verbal tasks: some preliminary results.

The present study gathered preliminary data from males and females for verbal and non-verbal tasks to explore differences in alpha hemispheric asymmetry. Results indicated a significant task by hemispheric interaction effect which revealed significantly less alpha for the left hemisphere, as compared to the right hemisphere, for the verbal task. Significantly less alpha was found for the right hemisphere during the non-verbal task as compared to the right hemisphere on the verbal task. While significant differences between males and females were not revealed, task, subject, and stimuli differences are discussed as variables which may contribute to results obtained from hemispheric processing research.

The cardiac component of the orienting response: effects of signal intensity, clinical interpretation, and procedural limitations.

The effects of stimulus intensity on the cardiac component of the orienting response were explored in male and female subjects. The acoustic stimuli were 10 recorded repetitions of an identical consonant vowel cluster spoken by an adult male. Heart rate data were obtained for both subject groups at three sensation levels across the baseline heart rate and at 10 stimulus presentation trials. A significant main effect was noted for trials. Significant linear and quadratic trend components were observed, reflecting habituation of the orienting response as a function of trials, and indicating the nonmonotonicity of heart rate change over trials. A lower mean heart rate was observed for Condition Two (20 dB SL) than for either of the other conditions, 10 dB and 30 dB SL respectively. Analysis of group variability and individual subjects' heart rate data suggested limitations in generalizing from group to individual data, as well as a need for further investigation if proper interpretation of single subject heart rate data are to be useful in the clinical situation.

Energy dependence of the neutron sensitivity of C--CO2, Mg--Ar and TE--TE ionisation chambers.

The neutron sensitivity relative to 60Co of commercially available C--CO2, Mg--Ar and TE--TE ionisation chambers was measured as a function of energy from 1 to 44 MeV. The sensitivity function was obtained by the method of Kuchnir, Vyborny and Skaggs from differences in measurements made at two angles in mixed fields having an isotropic gamma-ray component. Such fields were produced by bombardment of a thick beryllium target with 16 and 28 MeV deuterons, 44 MeV 3He-ions and 35 and 46 MeV protons. The results show that the relative neutron sensitivity of the C--CO2 and Mg--Ar chambers increases continuously with energy, whereas that of the TE--TE chamber is relatively constant.

Alpha asymmetry over the right and left hemispheres of stutterers and control subjects preceding massed oral readings: a preliminary investigation.

Interhemispheric alpha asymmetry of both stutterers and non-stutterers measured preceding each of five massed oral readings of the same material was investigated. Preliminary results indicated a reduction of alpha over the left hemisphere for non-stutterers, while a reduction for stutterers was found for the right hemisphere. Present results, together with other investigations using dichotic, tachistoscopic, and EEG procedures, suggest right hemispheric processing for the stuttering group as compared with left hemispheric processing for the non-stuttering group.

The effects of stimulability on the articulation of /s/ relative to cluster and word frequency of occurrence.

This study investigated the effects of stimulability on the articulation of cluster nested /s/ in high- and low-frequency clusters and words. A good stimulability group and a poor stimulability group of /s/-defective seven-year-old children were investigated. Statistical analysis did not reveal significant differences between the articulatory performances of the two groups on words or clusters occurring with high or low frequency. Subjects in the good stimulability group obtained significantly fewer errors on the test stimuli than did subjects in the poor stimulability group. Correlational analyses indicated that stimulability was positively correlated with correct numbers of /s/ productions in both clusters and words occurring with both high and low frequency. Subjects' spontaneous /s/ errors on the Templin-Darley screening test were not found to be correlated with their stimulability scores or their imitative /s/ productions in words and clusters occurring with high or low frequencies.

Transition dipole coupling in Amide I modes of betapolypeptides.

Our previous introduction of transition dipole coupling helped to explain the splittings in the Amide I modes of antiparallel chain pleated sheet polyglycine I. This mechanism has now been applied to the more likely rippled sheet structure of this polypeptide as well as to the pleated sheet structure of poly(L-alanine). A satisfactorily consistent explanation of the splittings in both polypeptides is obtained. Since a previously incorporated interaction constant has not been used in the present treatment, these results show that transition dipole coupling alone can provide the physical basis for understanding these splittings. It is therefore now possible to predict with confidence the hitherto unidentified v(pi,pi) frequency of the antiparallel chain pleated sheet as well as the characteristic frequencies of the parallel chain pleated sheet.

An automatic respirometer for determining oxygen uptake in crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes (Lereboullet)) over periods of 3-4 days.

1. An automatic respirometer has been developed for continuous measurements over 3-4 days on 1-15 g crayfish. The sensor is a modified Mackereth oxygen electrode. Respiration is recorded on a millivolt potentiometric pen recorder during closed periods when the O2 concentration in the medium falls to a predetermined level. A solenoid-operated valve is then opened via a relay circuit energized by a reed switch mounted on the recorder. Medium flows through the respirometer until the O2 concentration is raised back to another predetermined level. Artificial media containing little or no nutrient salts are used to restrict the growth of microbes. 2. Respiration was determined chiefly on crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes) with body wet weights of 7-0-12-5 g at 10-0 degrees C. In unrestrained but relatively quiescent animals, standard metabolism is described by the regression equation, ln O2 uptake = 3-3037 + 1-002 ln body wt. In restless crayfish active metabolism is described by the equation, ln O2 uptake = 4-4412 + 0-861 ln body wt.

Dichotic word-perception of aphasic and normal subjects.

The present investigation examined the role of the right cerebral hemisphere in linguistic perception following a left cerebral insult which had resulted in aphasia. Auditory dichotic procedures were utilized to investigate the ear-preferences of 30 aphasic Ss, grouped relative to the amount of time since the onset of left cerebral insult, and a group of 10 normal control Ss. An oral-response task and a pointing-response task were given. Statistical analyses showed a significant left-ear preference for aphasic Ss who were more than 6 mo. post-cerebral insult; however, Ss less than 6 mo. post-cerebral insult did not demonstrate a significant ear-preference under auditory dichotic stimulation. In contrast, a significant right-ear preference was noted for the normal controls. Significant differences were not shown for the aphasic or control groups on the oral and pointing tasks.

Dichotic ear preferences of stuttering children and adults.

39 stutterers and 39 normal speakers indicated their ear preferences for dichotically presented words and digits. A single response mode for both dichotic words and digits was selected to study speech perception. Stutterers showed significantly less of the normal right-ear preference for dichotic words and digits than non-stutterers. The proportion of stutterers who failed to demonstrate a right-ear preference for dichotic words was significantly greater than for non-stutterers. 18% of the stutterers and none of the non-stutterers showed reversed or a left-ear preference for dichotic digits. Although non-stuttering children and adults performed alike on the dichotic tasks, the right-ear dichotic-words scores of stuttering children were significantly smaller than those of adult stutterers. The results are related to an early notion that stuttering may be related to mixed dominance and recent evidence showing that large percentages of older stuttering children show spontaneous remission of stuttering.

Studies on red cell aplasia. V. Presence of erythroblast cytotoxicity in G-globulin fraction of plasma.

The marrow cells of a patient with pure red cell aplasia markedly increased their rate of heme synthesis when they were freed from the host environment and were incubated in vitro. When the red cell aplasia was treated with cyclophosphamide and prednisone, marrow cell incorporation of (59)Fe into heme in vitro increased several weeks before a reticulocytosis was apparent, and was the earliest effect noted. The plasma gammaG-globulins of this patient inhibited heme synthesis by normal marrow cells or the patient's own marrow cells obtained after remission of the disease. Since the inhibition of heme synthesis could be the result of damage to erythroblasts, the patient's posttreatment marrow cells or normal marrow cells were labeled with (59)Fe and were then incubated with the patient's pretreatment, treatment, and posttreatment gammaG-globulins as well as normal gammaG-globulins. At the end of this incubation the supernatant and cells were separated and counted. Heme was extracted and also was counted. Treatment of the cells with the patient's pretreatment gammaG-globulins resulted in a release of 40% of the radioactive heme from the cells. This represented the loss of radioactive hemoglobin and was an index of erythroblast cytotoxicity. A progressive disappearance of the cytotoxic factor in the gammaG-globulins occurred in the 3 wk period preceding the onset of reticulocytes in the patient's blood. Posttreatment and normal gammaG-globulins did not produce this effect and increased injury of red cells and lymphocytes was not produced by the patient's pretreatment gammaG-globulins. These studies demonstrate a method for measuring erythroblast cytoxicity and show that red cell aplasia is associated with gammaG-globulins that specifically damage erythroblasts. Whether interference with new erythroblast development also occurs and contributes to the inhibition of heme synthesis has not yet been ascertained.
