Ventilation of sinus has among other factors a pathogenetic significance in origin and progress of sinusitis. We examined 50 patients with sinusitis and tested their nasal breathing by rhinomanometry to analyze in how far an infectious disease of the sinus is caused by nasal stenosis. The localisation of stenosis in the nasal lumen was considered in particular. The thesis diminished nasal breathing generally favors the beginning of sinusitis could not be verified. Evaluation of the results showed clearly the pathogenetic significance of posterior stenosis. Stenosis in the anterior nasal region does not predispose to sinusitis.
Three methods for the medical therapy of sinusitis are described, inclusive of heat applications locally, inhalation therapy, and sinus aspirations. The advantages and limitations of such therapy are detailed, as based on both in vivo and model experiments.
The antiallergic and decongestive effects of the common cold preparation Balkis was tested by rhinomanometry in human volunteers usually suffering from allergic rhinitis after oral treatment. The nasal irritation in these patients was induced by administration of the specific allergen. This kind of test is especially appropriate for the control of drugs in cases of ordinary colds, as the test conditions are reproducible in symptomatically similar cases. The rhinomanometrical control of the respiratory resistance was carried out before and after an allergenic exposal as well as before and after administration of Balkis and allergenic exposal in 30 patients (17 females, 13 males; 9-49 years old). It is shown that Balkis had a good to satisfactory antiallergic effect in 67% of all cases. In 33% of the cases the antiallergic effect was not evident. This result confirms objectively the good antiallergic effect of this common cold preparation by oral administration. Balkis was well tolerated in all of the 30 patients. The symptoms of slight fatigue which appeared in 1/3 of all cases were only transitory.
In a 72-year-old woman with keto-acidaemia due to out-of-control diabetes, anaphylactic reaction occurred immediately after intravenous administration of 8 units of insulin. Extensive intracutaneous testing with highly purified insulins, including sheep and human insulin, revealed an allergy of the immediate type against the insulin molecule itself. Desensitization with subcutaneous insulin administration failed. Intracutaneous insulin injection three hours apart, starting at a dilution of 1:100, produced good subcutaneous tolerance of insulin within seven days.
Six to 12 hr after IP injection of 400 mg/kg of D-galactosamine in rats a 5-fold increase in plasma insulin was observed. In addition, impaired glucose assimilation was present after an IV Load in spite of unchanged fasting glucose levels. In streptozotocin-diabetic rats (100 mg/kg IV) plasma insulin remained diminished 12 h after induction of D-galactosamine hepatitis. Under identical conditions of preparation and incubation, the liver plasma membranes of D-galactosamine-treated rats, in both normal and diabetic states, bound only 40--60% as much insulin per mg of membrane protein as those of the control rats. Scatchard analysis suggested that this was due to a decrease in the number of receptor sites in the membranes of the D-galactosamine-injected rats. No difference in the insulin degrading capacity and in insulin-receptor dissociation of the plasma membranes between control and D-galactosamine-treated groups was found. These data suggest that a reduction in the number of hepatic insulin receptors in galactosamine hepatitis can lead to insulin resistance and hyperinsulinaemia.
Gliquidone (a second generation sulphonylurea) was administered orally to normal rats 1 h before killing. Gliquidone treatment led to a decrease in plasma glucose, an increase in insulin and a diminution in glucagon concentration. Insulin binding to liver plasma membranes was enhanced by 40% in comparison with controls, whereas glucagon binding was slightly diminished. These findings indicate a greater sensitivity of liver cells to insulin during sulphonylurea treatment and support the view that sulphonylureas potentiate insulin action on the liver.

The histopathology of an anular erythemalike dermatosis unexpectedly showed metastases of a carcinoma of the ovary.
Because of X-ray examinations during the process of sneezing the report of Weber is confirmed, that the cavity of the mouth is sealed against the nose in the moment of sneezing. So sneezing can only be done through the mouth. At the same time a spcial middle phase of the velum is described, i.e. its lifting by an active contraction before the actuel exspirational thrust as an essential difference to the coughing reflex. While coughing the movement of the velum is purely passive because of the exspirational thrust. The seal between the nose and cavity of the mouth is often not complete.
