Interaction between BRCA1 and human papilloma virus E7: an ontology study.

BRCA1 was the first breast cancer susceptibility gene to be identified and cloned. Recent studies indicate that BRCA 1 interacts with and regulates the activity of estrogen receptor alpha. The correlation between BRCA1 and E7 of papilloma virus becomes a new interesting topic in gynecological cancer. According to this study, E7 can add no function or aberration to the BRCA1 molecule. Further experimental studies are needed before making a conclusion on this topic. The finding in this study not only supports the previous knowledge on BRCA1 but also gives a new view on the function of BRCA1 and E7 in breast cancer. Here, the author used a new gene ontology technology to predict the molecular function and biological process of BRCA1 and E7.

A note from a survey of some knowledge aspects of leptospirosis among a sample of rural villagers in the highly endemic area, Thailand.

INTRODUCTION: The main purpose of this pilot study was to assess knowledge of leptospirosis among a sample of rural villagers in the highly endemic area, Thailand. METHOD: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among a sample of 300 rural villagers in the highly endemic area of leptospirosis, Buriram Province in Thailand. A self-administered questionnaire on some knowledge aspects of leptospirosis was used. RESULTS: The response rate was 100%. Most participants (80%) had a poor knowledge of leptospirosis. There was no significant correlation of sex and age of the subjects as to the level of knowledge (chi2, p > 0.05); however, there was significant correlation of level of education and occupation of the subjects to the level of their knowledge (chi2, p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Although this was a limited pilot study, the results imply that the present leptospirosis control program is not successful, and that the main problem is the knowledge level of people in endemic areas. A program to improve the basic knowledge of leptospirosis of rural villagers in endemic areas must be initiated.

A cost utility analysis of the right method for screening hemoglobin E among Thai pregnant women.

BACKGROUND: Inherited hemoglobin disorders are an important problem in many developing countries including Thailand. Of the several inherited hemoglobin disorders, hemoglobin E (HbE) (beta 26, GAG-AAG, Glu-Lys) is the most common hemoglobinopathy in Thailand. Presently, screening to identify carriers of hemoglobin disorders among pregnant subjects is an interesting topic in antenatal care in Thailand. Of late, many trials have been conducted to identify the right screening methods for the detection of hemoglobin disorders among Thai pregnant women. The common screening methods include red blood cell (RBC) index determination, application of mathematical model and hemoglobin electrophoresis. METHODS: Here, the author presents an evaluation of the cost utility of those tests in medical practice in Thailand. The cost/utility of hemoglobin electrophoresis is the highest followed by RBC index determination, application of mathematical model and DCIP test. RESULTS: Here, it can be shown that the cost per accurate diagnosis for DCIP is the least expensive. CONCLUSION: It is interesting to note that DCIP also posed high sensitivity in the screening for HbE disorder. Therefore, this test is the best method for screening the population, particularly pregnant women, to identify carriers of hemoglobin disorders. It should be recommended as part of antenatal care in Thailand as well as its neighbouring countries which have a similar high rate of HbE disorder.

Correlation between plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 4G/5G polymorphism and pre-eclampsia: an appraisal.

AIM: Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) is an important inhibitor of the fibrinolytic system, so it is biologically plausible that elevated levels could suppress fibrinolysis and result in an increased risk of thrombosis. There is considerable controversy regarding the clinical role of PAI-1 4G/5G polymorphism as a risk factor of pre-eclampsia. Here, the author performs a summative analysis on the recent previous reports on the PAI-1 4G/5G and its correlation to pre-eclampsia. METHOD: The metanalysis was performed in order to assess the correlation between the pattern of PAI-1 4G/5G polymorphism and pre-eclampsia. From the available six case-control studies, 880 patients and 810 controls are evaluated. RESULTS: The overall frequencies of 4G allele for the patients and controls are 49.9 and 44.4, respectively. According to this study, 54.9% of subjects with 4G allele have pre-eclampsia while 43.1% of subjects without 4G allele have pre-eclampsia. From overall risk estimation, the subjects with 4G alleles have 1.27 times higher risk to pre-eclampsia. CONCLUSION: According to this analysis, the author proposes that the pattern of PAI-1 4G/5G polymorphism might represent a useful marker of increased risk for pre-eclampsia. In addition, the lack of association between pattern of PAI-1 4G/5G and ethnicity of the patients can be demonstrated in this study.

Correlation between rainfall and the prevalence of malaria in Thailand.

Malaria is the most important parasitic disease of people, affecting over 200 million people and causing more than one million deaths each year. Presently, the Southeast Asia including Thailand is still the endemic are for malaria. The surveys of the disease prevalence are useful for prevention and control of disease [Phillips RS. Current status of malaria and potential for control. Clin Microbiol Rev 2001;14:208-26] and have been continuously performed in Thailand. The correlation between rainfall and infection rate of malaria is of interest. Here, the correlation between the rainfall and the prevalence of malaria was investigated. The relation between the rainfall (transformed from the geographical data) and the prevalence of malaria (transformed from the overall infection rate of malaria) is investigated. The least square equation plot rainfall (Y) vs. prevalence (X) is Y=24.82X+987.84 (r=0.76, P<0.01). In conclusion, the prevalence of malarial infection in Thailand may depend on rainfall. Therefore, the surveillance and control of mosquito during the period with high rainfall is recommended. Further, similar study to assess the correlation between the rainfall and prevalence of infection in the other countries is required to fulfill the conclusion.

Thrombin-like effect of an important green pit viper toxin, albolabrin: a bioinformatic study.

The green pit viper venom has a major effect on the hematological system. Clinical features of venomous snakebites vary from asymptomatic to fatal bleeding. The venom is found to have a thrombin-like effect in vitro. Here, the author performs a bioinformatic analysis on the green pit viper venom focusing on its thrombin-like effect. Sequence comparison between green pit viper venom, albolabrin and thrombin was performed. In addition, the author performed a search for other human proteins closely relating to the thrombin and created a multiple sequence alignment phylogenetic tree to present the family tree of the thrombin, albolabrin and those proteins recorded in the genomic database. In conclusion, the comparative sequence analysis between green pit viper venom and thrombin gives several identities. The reported relationship on the phylogenetic tree can match with the reported in vivo function of green pit viper. Explanations on the effect of green pit viper toxin on the hemostasis can be derived from this study. Furthermore, future researches based on the reported identities can be expected.

Lead intoxication: a summary of the clinical presentation among Thai patients.

Lead is an important toxic metal found in industrial communities. Due to the industrialization in the recent decade in Thailand, lead intoxication as a toxicant-related disorder becomes a new public health problem. A retrospective study on clinical presentation of hospitalized patients with diagnosis of lead intoxication during year 1990-1999 in King Chulalongkorn Memorial hospital, the largest Thai Red Cross Society Hospital, was performed. All 14 cases diagnosed with lead intoxication were identified in our series. Average age of the subjects was 25.55 +/- 21.93 years old. Male predominance was detected in our series (male:female = 12:2). Two main groups of subjects as; (1) childhood aged below 10 years old (male:female = 4:2) and (2) adult aged between 24 and 60 years old (n = 8, all male), can be identified. For the first group, the clinical presentations were convulsion (n = 3), unexplained anemia (n = 1), attention deficit (n = 1) and asymptomatic (n = 1), respectively. All of the subjects in this group presented the history of living at the old battery plant area. Five of the six cases came from the same village. For the second group, the clinical presentations were unexplained abdominal pain (n = 5), chronic renal failure (n = 1), unexplained anemia (n = 1) and asymptomatic (n = 1), respectively. Most of the subjects (75%) in this group presented the history of working in the battery plant for more than 10 years. Another case presented the history of gunshot and residual bullet in the bone marrow. The other one left is an interesting case with the history of prolonged usage of ritual pill and holy paper incineration. Like other studies, battery plant had strong relation with the lead intoxication. Although the total identified cases are rather few, there may be more undetected asymptomatic lead intoxication cases in the community. Specific control of lead resulted from battery plant and monitoring of the workers as public health strategies are still recommended.
