[Occupationally-induced skin tumors in East Germany. Increased risk of basalioma in furriers and hide processors?].

The percentage of occupational cancer is only 0.5% of all tumors in the German Democratic Republic. International estimations are higher (4 to 38%). From 1981 to 1985 49 skin tumors (32 squamous cell tumors and 17 basal cell cancers) were accepted as occupationally induced disease in 47 patients. No tumors were registered in 5 of the 15 counties of the GDR. The occupational histories were analysed in 300 basalioma patients and 600 citizens of the same sex and age. The risk of getting a basalioma was significantly higher in the group of furriers than in the control population. It is recommended to accept a basalioma as occupational cancer in case of contact with carcinogens in furriers.

Epidemiology of nickel allergy: results of a follow-up analysis of patients with positive patch tests to nickel.

In a previous paper, we reported on nickel sensitivity in 2400 consecutive patients in 5 countries. 3 years later, we reassessed 104 of the 157 nickel-positive patients of this former study and found 13 now to be negative to nickel sulphate. Nearly all the others can no longer tolerate nickel contact. 68 patients were free from nickel dermatitis, 16 showed a very mild eczema or dyshidrosis, and 13 were suffering from chronic hand dermatitis. 42 of 104 patients had changed their occupation, 36 successfully, with clearance of skin lesions. Rehabilitation by avoidance of nickel-containing costume jewelry, wrist-watches and clothing buckles, and by change of occupation, is possible and necessary.

Origin of the enhanced activity of lysosomal beta-galactosidase in serum and skin in progressive systemic sclerosis.

In 14 patients with progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) the activities of acid lysosomal glycosidases (alpha-, beta-galactosidase, beta-glucosidase, beta-glucuronidase, and beta-N-acetyl-glucosaminidase) were determined fluorometrically in serum, leukocytes, and skin tissue. The beta-galactosidase was the only enzyme which exhibited a significantly elevated activity in PSS serum and skin but not leukocytes, as compared to the control. The activity patterns of the studied glycosidases in serum were similar to those found in skin, but differ from the distribution of glycosidase activities in leukocytes. In cultured dermal fibroblasts derived from PSS patients, an elevated intracellular activity of beta-galactosidase was detected. These results suggest that the increased beta-galactosidase activity in the serum originates from the skin fibroblasts.

Immunological detection of cauliflower mosaic virus gene V protein produced in engineered bacteria or infected plants.

Antiserum was prepared against a synthetic peptide corresponding to the C-terminal 25 amino acids (aa) of the protein encoded by cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) gene V, which is thought to be a reverse transcriptase involved in viral DNA replication. This antiserum was used to detect the expression of CaMV gene V either in Escherichia coli JM103 transformed by an expression vector containing CaMV gene V or in CaMV-infected plants. In both cases, an 80-kDal protein has been detected.

Allergic and irritant potential of benzoyl peroxide.

Benzoyl peroxide (BP) is shown to be a weak allergen. Of 25 guinea pigs, only 5 were sensitized in the TINA test. Before treatment, only 2 of 172 acne patients gave a positive patch test with 1% BP, but not with 0.1% BP. The following results suggest that BP is a strong irritant. The irritant potential ID50 in rabbits was 2.52%, and the IT50 was 2.31 days with 5% BP, 4.34 days with 1% and 8.35 days with 0.1% BP. 29% of acne patients and non-exposed controls had a positive patch test with 5% BP. However, only 11 of 155 acne patients had clinical signs of intolerance, which settled despite continued use in 10 cases. The possible reasons for this dichotomy are explored. Neither the irritant nor allergenic properties of BP impaired its clinical use.
