[Skin moisture content in neurodermatitis patients in a maritime climate zone].

89 patients with atopic dermatitis were tested with regard to hydration of the horny layer. The measurements were taken at different topographic areas of the skin. It could be demonstrated that the hydration of the stratum corneum in patients with atopic dermatitis does not basically differ from that of healthy skin.

[Skin moisture and age. Age- and sex-specific skin moisture topography].

The skin humidity (=water content of the horny layer) of 160 healthy male and female persons was recorded at eleven different areas by a direct current conductivity method. The total of persons was divided into eight age-groups. It could be demonstrated that there are significant differences between the examined areas and also between the different age-groups. Furthermore there are sex-limited differences in the series of the areas and mean skin humidity.

[In vivo hydration measurement of the stratum corneum (author's transl)].

A methods is described which allows the humidity measurement of the horny layer of the human skin. The method is based on the correlation between the direct current conduction at 3.0 V and the gravimetrically analyzed humidity of a homogenous skin model. The validity of this model is mainly limited by the nonhomogenous distribution of humidity in the stratum corneum. This method is applied to healthy human skin to find out the dynamic response of the skin to moisturization by water bath. It is a surprising result that 15 min after the bath the horny layer is dryer than before starting the experiment. The kinetic of the humidity change from the moisturization state to the equilibrium state is followed, after a fast initial phase, by a normal exponential decay, which is used as a proof for the applicability of the correlation between the electric conductivity and the humidity of the model for the determination of the overall humidity of the human horny layer.

[Effect of salicylic acid on the blanching effect of flumethasone pivalate (author's transl)].

Test results are reported of the effect of salicylic acid on the vasoconstrictive effect of flumethasone pivalate. In specific, the depigmentation of the skin (identical with increase in lightness of the skin) following topical application of flumethasone pivalate was investigated with the aid of an improved spectrophotometric method. Using numeric lightness evaluation it was possible to demonstrate that salicylic acid increases the vasoconstriction.

[Ano-cutaneous gangrenous ergotism].

A case of ergotism by abuse of ergotamine tartrate suppositories is reported. The patient developed the clinical picture of ergotism with multiple perianal ulcers. After ergot had been withdrawn there was a spontaneous healing of these ulcers after a few weeks. It is well known that ergot abuse can develop severe vascular spasm in the arteries, but it is unknown that cutaneous ulcers may occur by topical application.

[Cryotherapy for haemorrhoids (author's transl)].

Case reports of 1737 patients who were treated by cryotherapy have been analysed. The technique, indications, contraindications, complications and results of this therapy are described. This method gave a satisfactory result in 90% of the patients and 14% of the patients had severe pain immediately after the therapy. There are no follow-up results, because the treatment of haemorrhoids by cryosurgery is fairly new.

[Results of incidence analyses in external hemorrhoids].

The perianal region of 294 healthy persons (151 male, 143 female) of different age was examined and the size, the localization and the number of the skin tags were registered. The frequency increases in women especially at the beginning of the second decade and in men especially at the fourth decade of life. 80% of all women and 60% of all men have skin tags. The size of the skin tag increases while the person becomes older. In the average women have bigger skin tags than men. Most of the skin tags are located in the region of 12 and 6 h lithotomy position.

[Ambulatory hemorrhoidectomy through rubber band ligation-review of the literature].

The value of rubber band ligation in the treatment of haemorrhoids is discussed and the literature on the case histories of 3244 patients who were treated by this technique is reviewed. 36% of the patients found this form of therapy to be painless, 41% suffered little and 14% severe pain. 80% of all patients finally were free of symptoms. Rubber band ligation therefore is an effective method treating internal haemorrhoids. Its advantages are simplicity, relatively little discomfort for the patient, applicability in ambulant patients, no general anaesthesia, low cost and good results with only minor complications. Thus it is an alternative to sclerotherapy and to surgical haemorrhoidectomy.
