[Heritability index for diagnosing talent and aptitude in children and teenagers].

Longitudinal correlation und heritability in the broad sense are equivalent expressions for the reliability in the long run. Since long-range prediction is the aim of personnel selection in athletics, education and other applied fields, we recommend to use heritability as a weighting factor for phenotypic scores of adolescents in order to calculate true scores and to eliminate error variance. On the basis of the matrix of correlations of 7 tests of physical fitness, body height and weight, and their heritabilities the calculation of the heritability index is demonstrated.

The use of heritabilities of anthropometric measures and performance tests in personnel selection.

An analogy exists between the mathematical models of psychological test theory and quantitative genetics. From this analogy we can conclude, that longitudinal correlation and heritability in the broad sense are equivalent expressions for the reliability in the long run. Since long-range prediction is the aim of index construction for personnel selection in athletics and other applied fields, we recommend to use heritability as a weighting factor for phenotypic scores in order to calculate true scores and to eliminate error variance.

Anthropometry↗

[Reliability, heritability, correlation in longitudinal studies (author's transl)].

An analogy exists between the mathematical models of psychological test theory and quantitative genetics, as well as between the parameters, reliability and heritability, derived from these models. With the same results, heritability and correlation in longitudinal studies are only different approaches to the same problem, the reliability of measurement in the long run, that is of fundamental consequence for personnel selection.

[The heritabilities of tests of physical fitness, calculated from the performances of ten years old twin pairs (author's transl)].

In the German Democratic Republic a representative sample of 300 twin pairs of normal 10 years old school children was measured and tested. From a subset of 480 pairs (153 pairs of opposite sex and 327 of the same sex) the heritabilities are calculated: stature 0,89; weight 0,88; 60 meters run 0,85; long jump 0,74; cricketball throw 0,54; push up 0,85; hop jump 0,66; endurance run 0,93; shot throw 0,71. The use of heritabilities as weighting factors in the construction of selection indices for purposes of personnel selection is discussed.

[General anaesthesia in ophthalmology (author's transl)].

General anaesthesia is aimed at calming the patient in the praeanaesthetic period, creating good operating conditions and ensuring a quiet post-anaesthetic recovery. A praeanaesthetic examination is necessary and special attention has to be given to the age and condition of the patient. Existant other deseases have to be treated and the anaesthetic technic has to be properly adapted to the kind of surgery. Modern anaesthetic drugs normally provide for these requirements and in particular to prevent the occurrence of the oculocardiac reflex.

Enflurane metabolism and postoperative renal function.

Inorganic fluoride concentrations in blood and urine were measured in 22 gynaecological patients during and after anaesthesia with enflurane and post-operative renal function was investigated. Ten patients (group I) were given 0.6 vol.% enflurane, and 12 patients (group II) a mixture of 0.6 and 0.8 vol.% enflurane. The serum fluoride concentration of arterial blood reached, in group I, after 120 min 18,99 micronmol/1 whereas in group II the concentration was 21 micronmol/1. One hour after the end of anaesthesia the fluoride concentration in venous blood were nearly identical in both groups and decreased in the following 12 h evenly. In all patients relatively high postoperative fluoride concentrations were observed in the urines. No evidence of renal dysfunction was found after anaesthesia.

[Enflurane and fluorconcentrations in maternal and fetal blood during anaesthesia for for caesarean Section (authors transl)].

During anaesthesia for caesarean sections, the placental transfer and metabolism of Enflurane were investigated in 14 cases. In 3 cases, the administered concentration of 0.4 vol.% Enflurane showed too slight anaesthesia. In 11 cases, 0.6 vol.% Enflurane were delivered to the maternal respiratory mixture. A gaschromatographic method was used to measure the maternal and fetal blood concentrations of Enflurane. The calculated maternal mean value of Enflurane showed a concentration of 330 mumol/l which corresponds to 6.07 mg/100ml; the fetal mean value was 148 mumol/l or 2.72 mg/100 ml. This means that during operating time about 44.8% from the maternal Enflurane concentration has crossed to the fetus. The metabolic break down of Enflurane could be demonstrated by the measurement of inorganic fluorides in the maternal and fetal blood. The fluor concentration in the maternal blood increased during the operation and reached a mean value of 15.5 mumol/l at the time of birth; the mean value in the cord vein was at the same time 9.28 mumol/l which corresponds to 61% of the maternal concentration.

[Detection of major genes for quantitative morphologic characteristics on family material, sib pairs and parent-child pairs, using as an example head length in man].

The detection of major genes affecting quantitative morphological characters from data of families, sib-pairs and parent-child pairs (with the example of head length in man). The major genes of human head length are defined utilizing three different combinatorical methods of maximum likelihood estimation. To prove the discriminatory power of methods, it is necessary in further research to work with empirical or simulated sets of multivariate data of which the genetical structure is known.
