Cilia in rat articular chondrocytes.

The cilia ultrastructural characteristics of chondrocytes from articular cartilage during its prenatal development were studied. It was established that these structures are not rare in electron microscopic observation of cartilage. They appear in the early stages of differentiation of the mesenchymal cells into chondroblasts. Ultrastructurally they show no differences during all periods of development. In some of the tangential layer cells of the newly formed articular cartilage were discover elements of more than one cillium in the same cell. It was also established that these structures project from parts of the cell presenting well developed Golgy complex.

[Effect of colostral antibodies on the development of immunity in piglets immunized with live vaccine].

Pigs of sows treated with a live vaccine were in turn vaccinated with a live vaccine at different age. Part of them were challenged with a virus at 60 days of age, the remaining -- at 90 days. The pigs were kept under clinical observation, and were killed on the 10th day following challenge in order to be thoroughly investigated. It was found that the passive immunity (virus-neutralizing antibodies) in pigs of twice (live vaccine) treated sows persisted for 4 to 5 weeks after birth. It dropped steplike, however, the interference of the vaccinal virus speeded up the process -- the earlier the vaccination the faster the exhaustion of immunity. The passive immunity was found to neutralize the vaccinal virus and hamper the building of active immunity. The presence of eosinophile leukocytes in the lymph nodes, tonsils, and spleen of the vaccinated pigs spoke of an immune reaction.

[Reactivity changes in calves during transportation].

The activity of 38 calves aged 15-30 days of the Simenthal breed and of crosses with Ireshire was studied before and after transportaton at a distance of 38-100 km. It was established that transportation causes fatigue, thirst and a weight reduction of 4.3 kg, due to loss of liquid in the calf's organism. Caughing, soft faeces, even diarrhea, 1.5 degrees C higher rectal temperature, and 3.0 degrees C lower skin temperature, were recorded. the MacClure--Oldridge test proved twice as fast. As a result of hemoconcentration hemoglobin and hematocrite were higher. Eosinopaenia and neutrophylia with a nuclear deviation to the left similar to the reaction of experimentally induced lipopolysaccharide fever were established. On the 72d hour lymphocytosis and an enhanced lymhocytal index were observed. Transportation led to 15-18% higher number of phagocyted neutrophyls, 30-35% higher Wright number and nearly two times higher total blood phagocytal ability. Seventy two hours after two times higher total blood phagocytal ability. Seventy two hours after transportation the total blood phagocytal ability was reduced 15%. Another effect of calf transportation was the reduced total immunological reactivity, scored by the skin test of Yoffe.

[Clinical and pathomorphological studies of rabbits injected with virulent and lapinized swine plague virus].

Investigations were carried out to establish the clinical and morphological reactions in rabbits following the consecutive infection with the virulent Vratsa strain and the lapinized K strain of the swine fever virus. It was found that although the virulent strain did not cause a thermal response there were morphological lesions in the body of the rabbits, characterizing the presence of an immune response. The latter was shown to inhibit the thermal reaction in the animals after infecting with lapinized strain. It is stated that such inhibition of the thermal reaction which is typical for strain K is invariably generated if the lapinized virus is injected 120 hours after the injection of the virulent virus.

[Effect of subtoxic doses of dipterex on guinea pigs].

Chronic experiments were carried out with 62 guinea pigs (31 test and 31 control animals) which were given dipterex orally for 60 days at the rate of 100 mg/kg each. The effect was followed up of dipterex on the bactericidal properties of the blood, the phagocytic activity of some organs of the reticulo-endothelial system, the serum cholinesterase, the alkaline phosphatase, the hemoglobin and hematocrit values of the blood, and the proteinogram of the blood serum. A neglible drop of the gamma-globin fraction of the serum and the phagocytic activity of the immobile cells of the RES of the spleen and liver was found. The hemoglobin content decreased by 13.5 per cent, while the hematocrit value remained unchanged. At the amount given above dipterex suppressed by 50 per cent the activity of the serum cholinesterase, and increased by 36 per cent that of the alkaline phosphatase.

[Production and testing of a live lyophilized bivalent vaccine against Aujeszky's disease and erysipelas in swine].

A live freeze-dried bivaccine against swine erysipelas and Aujeszky's disease in pigs was produced, its antigen titers reaching 10(8) and 10(4.67) for the two components, respectively. The immunity conferred to the vaccinated pigs (so far as Aujeszky's disease is concerned) had an antibody titer of 1:4, and in sheep the titer was up to 1:16, these animals showing resistance at a control infection with 5000 LD50 per head. The vaccinated pigs likewise withstood a control infection with a mixed 24-48-hour broth culture of virulent strains causing swine erysipelas.

[Influence of tissue emulsions on the phagocytic activity of the RES].

Radiometric, microbiologic, biochemical and morphologic investigations were carried out with a total of 95 guinea pigs and 20 rabbits in order to study the effect of the biogenic stimulants after Filatov on the phagocytic activity of the reticulo-endothelial system. Use was made of a tissue emulsion of swine embryos with biologic activity up to 160 per cent and a microbial stain - Escherichia coli 078. The labeling of the microorganisms was effected by means of 32P as obtained from Na2 H32PO4. It was found that the parenteral treatment of the animals with tissue emulsion after Filatov leads to the enhancement of the phagocytic activity and the lysing of the phagocytised bacteria by the elements of the reticulo-endothelial system by 7 to 10 per cent more than was observed with the use of control animals. The biogenic stimulants after Filatov activate the plasmocytic reaction of the body and the development of ribonucleoproteids in the parenchymal organs, and raise the level of properdin and gamma-globulins in the blood of the treated animals.
