Carcinoma of the cervix is known to have a multifactorial etiology and several factors are implicated in increasing the risk of eventual development of cervical malignancy in a woman. This communication attempts to highlight the small family norms in the prevention of uterine cervical cancer. Data on 117,411 cytologically screened women were considered in which 215 women were found to have cervical cancer. Age adjusted rates of malignancy per 100,000 women in three parity groups (0-2, 3-4 and 5+) were 91.1, 174.4 and 393.1 respectively. An increasing trend of malignancy was noticed with increasing parity in women who had their consummation of marriage before 18 years as well as after 18 years. It may be concluded that the small family norm (only two children) being advocated as a part of a national family welfare program would be another primary prevention measure against uterine cervical cancer.
Rotavirus was detected in 111 (15.9%) of 694 children who presented to our hospital with acute diarrhoea over a period of 45 months (1982-1985). Subgrouping for rotavirus was done on 87 children by ELISA using specific monoclonal antibodies to find out any differences in the epidemiology and clinical profile of the two subgroups. Twenty six (29.9%) were found to belong to subgroup 1 and 61 (70.1%) to subgroup 2. Diarrhoea, vomiting and fever were present in both the subgroups in the same frequency. However, the severity of diarrhoea was more in children having subgroup 2 infection. Rotavirus infection showed two peaks, one during the early months of summer and the other during the early months of winter of each year. During most of the study period, infection was predominantly with subgroup 2, except for a few months in 1983 and 1985 when a majority of children had infection with subgroup 1.
43, patients, subjected to cervical cytology, colposcopy and colposcopic directed biopsy, were found to have lesions suggestive of human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection by one or more parameters. Immunohistochemical staining for HPV antigen yielded positive results in 23 (53.5 p. cent) cases. Amongst 30 cases with HPV lesions both in cytology and histopathology, 19 (63.3 p. cent) were positive for the HPV antigen. This was significantly higher as compared to the groups where HPV lesion was observed in cytology or histology alone (p = 0.05). The rate of positivity was the highest (81.3 p. cent) in a group of 16 patients having low grade dysplasia (mild to moderate) and both cytology and histologic evidence of koilocytotic changes. Presence or absence of HPV lesion by colposcopic examination in these 43 cases did not make any significant difference in rate of antigen positivity.
There is a paucity of data on occurrence of delta hepatitis in India. We here present our preliminary data showing that delta coinfection and superinfection occur quite frequently in our set up. The coinfection rate was found to be 15% and superinfection rate 26.6% in the initial screening of 69 patients of acute and chronic liver disease.
Monoclonal anti-GnRH antibodies (MoAbs) P862, P778, P813 and P764 reacted optimally to native GnRH and poorly to GnRH(OH) of sequence 4-6, 7-10, 4-10 and 1-10. The heptapeptide 4-10 showed maximum reactivity amongst the four peptides tested for immunoreactivity. Sepharose 4B-GnRH(OH)4-10 (H-Ser-Tyr-Gly-Leu-Arg-Pro-Gly-OH) column was therefore used to purify the fraction of MoAb reacting to this sequence. The affinity purified MoAbs (A-MoAbs) were further characterized for their binding to the different sequences and affinity with native GnRH. The binding, cross-reactivity and affinity characteristics of A-MoAbs were comparable with those of MoAbs. Immunoreactivity of A-MoAbs was also observed to be partly regained when GnRH(OH)1-10 was coupled to Lys, Lys-MDP or H-Ala-Ala-Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-OH. These observations clearly demonstrate that MoAbs were neither contaminated nor were sequence specific but were directed against the conformation of the molecule.
Monoclonal anti-GnRH antibodies reacting to the heptapeptide 4-10 (H-Ser-Tyr-Gly-Leu-Arg-Pro-Gly-OH) were isolated by affinity chromatography using Sepharose 4B-heptapeptide (4-10) column. The ELISA additivity test and antibody-antibody competition techniques were used to study whether the affinity purified MoAb (A-MoAb) fraction recognize the sequence or the conformation of the native hormone. All four A-MoAbs, P862, P778, P764 and P813, were able to recognize the common epitope and did not allow to bind the conventional anti-GnRH antibodies (CoAbs) indicating that the CoAbs were conformation specific. Similarly in antibody-antibody competition technique, all A-MoAbs were able to compete with CoAbs, indicating that MoAbs were generated against the conformation of GnRH involving the entire molecule.
Plasmodium berghei infection to Mastomys natalensis showed hyper beta-lipoproteinemia. The increase in serum cholesterol is associated with decreased uptake of low density lipoprotein (LDL) by the liver through receptor mediated endocytosis. The membranes prepared from infected M. natalensis exhibit up to 50% decline in high affinity binding sites for human 125I-LDL. Significant increases in serum lipids, cholesterol, triglyceride and lipid peroxide (LPO) contents of liver membrane were observed. Effects of lipid constituents and LPO content of liver membrane in relation to LDL catabolism and other possible mechanisms have been explained.

Cancer of the uterine cervix is the most common malignancy among Indian women. Evidence has shown that cervical cancer is preceded by dysplastic, or precancerous, lesions. HSV-II has been associated with this process of cervical carcinogenesis. We collected 167 cervical smears that had been diagnosed as normal, dysplastic, or carcinoma-in-situ and found a significantly high positivity of HSV-II antigen in women with cervical dysplasia (38.8%) and carcinoma-in-situ (33.3%) versus women with normal cytology (17.02%). Latent HSV-II infection of cervical epithelium may be considered of prognostic value to identify a population at high risk for cervical cancer.
After an accidental or intentional ingestion of lindane, clinical manifestations of poisoning may include rapid onset of nausea and vomiting, coma, seizures, respiratory failure, and death. While rhabdomyolysis, secondary renal failure, and aplastic anemia have also been reported, coagulopathies have not been observed following poisoning with this pesticide. In this case report we describe a 43-year-old female who intentionally ingested 8 oz of a 20% lindane solution. Her serum lindane concentration reached 1.3 mcg/ml and her clinical manifestations included seizures, coma, rhabdomyolysis, secondary renal failure, and disseminated intravascular coagulation. The coagulopathy presented early in her clinical course and resolved when serum lindane levels fell. The patient died 11 days after the ingestion.
Paraffin sections of 50 cervical condyloma biopsies from patients with precancerous and early cancerous lesions of the uterine cervix were screened for human papillomavirus (HPV) antigen by peroxidase-antiperoxidase (PAP) staining using genus specific anti-bovine papillomavirus serum (rabbit). The intra-nuclear HPV positivity was observed in 20 percent (10/50) of biopsies studied. Further, proportionately larger number of cases with moderate dysplasia (CIN II) associated with koilocytotic changes were found to be positive for HPV antigen (40%). No HPV positivity was detected from inflammation and mild dysplasia (CIN I) cases. The study strongly supports the association of HPV infection in the process of neoplastic transformation of the uterine cervix.
