D-myo-inositol derivatives alter liposomal membrane fluidity.

We investigated the effect on membrane fluidity induced by D-myo-inositol derivatives (IP3, IP4, IP5, IP6). Fluidity was determined as the anisotropy of fluorescence polarisation from liposome model membranes labelled with DPH (1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5 hexatriene). IP3 (10(-10) to 10(-5) M) increased the membrane fluidity with a maximum effect at 10(-5) M. For IP4, IP5 and IP6, at concentrations less than 10(-6) M these derivatives increased the membrane viscosity (i.e. reduced fluidity). This effect was enhanced when the derivatives were incorporated in the vesicles, rather than added to the vesicle suspension. In this case IP5 and IP6 increased viscosity over the reference values. We conclude that inositol derivatives directly modified membrane fluidity which could play a role in their effects in biological systems, beside the one mediated by binding to specific receptors.

[Experimental study using 86Rb on the permeability of biomaterials used for occlusal pit and fissure sealants].

In experimental in vivo work, we used 45Ca and 131I radioisotopes to establish the impervious nature of biomaterials used for filling. A comparative study of permeability in 3 biomaterials used as pit and fissure sealant, alkylcyanoacrylate, Delton and Sigilar was conducted with 86Rb radiosotope. The materials were applied to the surface of 60 natural intact teeth divided into 3 sets and 6 groups. Each of the 3 types of materials were applied no one set of teeth. Within each set, a group of 10 teeth were labeled with 86Rb for 30 minutes and the other group was marked with 86Rb for 60 minutes. After washing, gamma emission was measured immediately after labeling then again 24 hours later. Results indicate that the biomaterial Delton is the least permeable to 86Rb, gamma counts being approximately 20-times lower with Delton than with alkylcyanoacrylate and Sigilar.

[The Rieger syndrome. A clinical study. A study of 4 generations in one family with the Rieger syndrome].

Rieger syndrome is a rare disease with autosomal dominant inheritance (4q25-4q27) characterised by the presence of ocular and extraocular abnormalities. We present a family with Rieger syndrome on four generations, pointing the ocular and extraocular abnormalities. The most frequent complication is secondary glaucoma (50-60% of all cases) and the efficient treatment consists in utilising the betablockers and/or filtering operations with the possibility of antimetabolites help.

[The recovery of visual performance in strabismus with eccentric fixation].

The purpose of this work is to realise a general view about the diagnosis, therapeutic methods and the results obtained in eccentric fixation strabismus. We realised a six years retrospective study on 144 eccentric strabismus, watching dynamic the evolution by testing: the orthophoric status, visual acuity, binocular vision and the type of fixation. Medium follow un time was of 19.6 months. In the end of the treatment we notice: visual acuity between 0.1-0.5 in 14% cases; central fixation in 52 children (36%); first degree of binocular vision in 15 children (10.4%) and second degree in 5 cases (3.47%). This study showed that the early installation of eccentric fixation strabismus was in 53% cases before reaching one year old and in 90% before two years old. The functional results was negative influenced by the delay in presentation (42% come after 2 years) and the difficulties in family cooperation (46.5% were followed up lesenban 6 months).

Salmonella typhi strain with transmissible multiple resistance.

A case of typhoid fever caused by multiple drug resistant S typhi by R factor was clinically and bacteriologically studied. The clinical course was weakly influenced by successive chloramphenicol (21 days) and ampicillin (7 days) therapy; recovery occured after 62 days of disease including 2 relapses) as a result of the combined effect of immunization by disease and septrin administration (9 days). Two strains of S. typhi were isolated, one of them from blood culture before treatment, being Vi A degraded, sensitive to antibiotics A, C, T (strain 221) and the other from stool culture, after 4 days chloramphenicol treatment, being untypable with adapted Vi II phages, resistant to A, S, C, T (strain 552). Resistance markers were transferred within 4 conjugation systems, from strain 552 - as donor - to E. coli K12, to S. typhi A and to S. typhi 221 - as recipient-, the resistance level found was equal to that of the donor for all the determinants. The fi- character of the resistance factor was established and its possible restrictive effect in explaining the presence of two lytic patterns was discussed. The importance of the occurence of multiple drug-resistant S. typhi in certain areas, as well as chemical and epidemiological consequences, is emphasized.

Restriction and modification of typing phages by an R factor in S. typhi.

We have investigated the qualities of one R factor 552 discovered on a strain of S. typhi resistant to A, C, S, T, nontypable, isolated from stool cultures; from the same patient, before starting the treatment we isolated, from his blood sample, the strain S. typhi 221, sensitive to A, C, T, degraded phage-type Vi A. Factor R 552 fi- when infecting strains of S. typhi Vi A and of A degraded 221- leads to the conversion of the respective phage-types into non-typable ones, as a result of the restricting and modifying effect on phage Vi A and on the derivatives resulting from it. Derivative R 552-1 as a resistance marker to ampicilline has a restrictive effect on the phage of S. panama A 47 too. Not taking into account possible causes such as spontaneous mutation, lysogeny, and adsorption of phages, we reach for the conclusion that R factor 552, through is restrictive effect, is the only cause responsible for the existence in the same patient of two strains of S. typhi different from the point of view of phage-type and antibiotype.
