Changes in the lipid composition of blood plasma and liver in rats induced by severe psychic trauma.

The concentration of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides in rat serum sharply decreased after psychic trauma caused by life hazard. The content of these substances remained unchanged for not less than 1 week after trauma. The concentration of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol was low, while serum content of triglycerides increased 6 weeks after trauma. The concentration of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol significantly decreased after repeated psychic trauma. These changes were accompanied by a sharp increase in the concentration of triglycerides in the serum. Total cholesterol concentration in the liver decreased under these conditions.

The effects of proinflammatory cytokines on the formation of behavior in early postnatal ontogenesis.

Studies were performed to investigate impairments to the formation of behavior arising as a result of increases in the proinflammatory cytokine interleukin-1beta in early postnatal ontogenesis. The cytokine was given at pyrogenic or subpyrogenic doses for one week (the first, second, or third week of life). Behavior was assessed at prepubertal age and in the adult state in the open field and elevated cross maze tests. The greatest changes were seen in adolescent rats given interleukin-1beta during the first or third weeks of life. Impairments were seen after administration of pyrogenic and subpyrogenic doses of cytokine and were identical in females and males. Changes consisted of partial substitution of acts, increases in motor activity and decreases in investigative activity. After sexual maturation, these behavioral impairments were no longer seen.

[Role of neuropeptide galanin in formation of the typical behavioural characteristics].

Blockade of central galanin receptors through intranasal treatment with specific antagonis M-35 changes the behavioral reactions to novel conditions: the animals treated with M-35 show decreased exploratory activity and increased anxiety level in open field test. The level of pre-progalanin mRNA expression in brain structures was investigated in Wistar rats with opposite strategies of behaviors in open field test. A higher level of pre-progalanin mRNA in anterior hypothalamus of "active" rats was revealed as compared with "passive" rats. The rats treated with galanin receptor antagonist showed a significant rise of serum corticosteron level immediately after forced swimming, while the control rats (without M-35) had only slight corticosterone increase under the sam conditions. The data obtained suggest involvement of brain galanin in formation of individual beha vior and indicate important role of galanin in coping with the stress.

[The action of proinflammatory cytokines on formation of behavior during early postnatal ontogenesis].

The study is devoted to the role of proinflammatory cytokine-interleukin-1beta during early postnatal ontogenesis in formation of behavioral programs. Cytokine was injected in pyrogenic and subpyrogenic doses during 1 week (1, 2 or 3 weeks of life). The behavior was tested in the young (40-45 days) and adult (3 months) rats in the "open field" and "elevated plus maze". The greatest behavior disordes (elevation of act's number and of motor activity, the decrease of investigation activity) are revealed in the young animals treated with IL-Ib during 1 and 3 weeks of life. These behavioral changes were marked in rats injected with pyrogenic and subpyrogenic doses of cytokine. They had a similar tendency in male and female rats. At the age of 3 months, behavior changes revealed in juvenile rats were insignificant.

Effects of serotonin synthesis blockade on interleukin-1 beta action in the brain of rats.

The ability of the brain serotonergic system to mediate the effects of interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) was investigated. Intracerebroventricular administration of IL-1beta induced a significant pyrogenic reaction, depression in social behaviour, loss of body weight and reduced food intake in rats. Pre-treatment with p-chlorphenylalanine, an inhibitor of serotonin synthesis, blocked the IL-1beta-induced decrease in food intake and loss of body weight, but failed to alter the temperature increase and the decrease in communicative activity.

Antipyretic effect of neuropeptide galanin in endotoxin-induced fever.

Neuropeptide galanin produces a antipyretic effect in experimental pyrogenic reaction induced by intraperitoneal injection of lipopolysaccharide. Central intracerebroventricular injection of 100 ng galanin significantly attenuated, but did not completely abolish fever. Central galanin injection potentiated endotoxin-induced activation of the noradrenergic system and blocked activation of the serotoninergic system of the anterior hypothalamus.

[Characteristics of the rat behavior following single and multiple exposures of the hypoglycemic insulin doses].

Rats behaviour in the "open field" changed in 2 hrs after a single episode of hypoglycaemia was abolished with glucose whereas no changes occurred in their stereotyped behaviour and intraspecies interaction. In 24 hrs quantitative parameters of the "open field" behaviour normalised although the behaviour still had an altered structure. At the same time, amphetamine-induced stereotyped behaviour's indices became reduced. These and other findings suggest some deeper behavioural changes in rats during their recovery from repeated hypoglycaemic episodes and absence of synchronisation of the insulin effects.

[Interleukin-1beta and depressive states].

Administration of Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) in pyrogenic and subpyrogenic doses induced a depression of social and exploratory behaviour in rats. A reduction in locomotor activity only occurred with pyrogenic doses of the IL-1 beta. The low dose induced the reduction whereas the high dose the increase of anxiety in elevated plus maze. The opposite effects of two doses of IL-1 beta were observed also in a test with saccharine.

[Conflict of motivations and the reaction of neutrophilic granulocytes in rats].

A motivational conflict induced a decrease in the cation proteins content in neutrophils within 12 hrs after the stress in make rats. Activity of enzymes taking part in the respiration did not change. A cyclic variation of the cation proteins content was found during the oestrus cycle in neutrophils of female rats.

[Changes in the level of the permanent potential of the deep brain structures in rabbits with a Brown-Pearce carcinoma].

Rabbits with the Brown-Pierce carcinoma have been studied in chronic experiments for dynamics of the permanent potential reflecting bioelectrochemical processes in different structures of the hypothalamic and limbic system: medial preoptic area, ventromedial nucleus, posterior hypothalamic area, basal and lateral amygdalas, hippocampus, nucleus coeruleus as well as in central nucleus of the suture. The space-temporal pattern of neurodynamic changes in the subcortical brain structures has been found. These changes correlated with developmental characteristics of the Brown-Pierce carcinoma.

[Efferent neural apparatus of the thymus gland, spleen and lymph nodes and its reaction to electric stimulation of the posterior hypothalamic field].

At a histochemical investigation of the rabbit lymphoid organs innervation certain peculiarities on histotopography of adrenergic and acetylcholinesterase (AChE)-containing nervous elements have been established. At a chronic experiment by means of a dosed repeated bilateral electrostimulation of the posterior hypothalamic field in the organs mentioned, inhibition of the functional activity has been noticed. It is most specific not for the AChE-containing structures, but for the adrenergic ones, localized to some extent in the parenchyma, as well as along the course of the blood vessels and their adventitium. The results are discussed in terms of modulatory influence of the posterior hypothalamic field on trophic and functions of the lymphoid tissue. This influence is realized both humoraly and via the nervous pathways (either directly using certain ways and connections, or indirectly by means of neurogenic tonus of the intraorganic blood vessels regulation).

[A model for exploring afferent signals from the immune system to the nervous system].

Mechanisms of information transmission from the immune system to the nervous system have been studied. The results of the studies support the assumption that these signals can be transmitted by oligopeptides (the products of limited proteolysis) which are the fragments found in the active sites of many regulatory peptides of the nervous and immune systems. The testing of a synthesized tripeptide (Ser-Lys-Asp) has shown that it inhibits the antibody-forming cells in intact mice only in response to the administration of large antigen doses and exerts a protective effect against viral infection. When added to the culture of the incubated leukocytes from the peripheral blood of the oncological patients, the tripeptide lowers an increased or normal functional activity of natural killers. In rabbits, tripeptide administration brings about a complex long-lasting reorganization of bioelectrical activity in subcortical structures of the brain.
